Not everything in Japan adheres to the classical Japanese approach of minimal, sophisticated design. There is plenty of fun kitsch, too. And this is a fantastic, nostalgic example. First released back in the 1970s, the Kyorochan Bear Shaved Ice Machine is just about as cute a way you could find to prepare ice for kakigori and other shaved ice or snow cone desserts. The manual ice shaving machine, made by Tiger, comes in three bright colors, all in the shape of the bear character. As you rotate the handle on the top to shave the ice, the eyes of the bear will move. This makes it a fun item to have in the kitchen if you have young kids.
