It's not really sci-fi, but you might like 14. It's not in space, but it has weirdos and specialists, a great mystery, shadowy bad guys, and a very similar threat to the world/worlds. Not to mention gruesome and gooey death!

Also, The Fold is in the same universe but has different characters and a different feel overall.
