How do you feel about boots as your second shoe? If you've got $250, the vans are $60, then you're left with $190. I'm a fan of Chelsea boots personally, since they can easily go with jeans, but you can also dress them up a little. Have a look at some of these and see if any grab your fancy. They're all high quality footwear, you should be able to get many years out of them. The ones I marked GYW are Goodyear welted construction, these are the ones that will last the longest.

If you want something a bit in between why the the Wolverine 1000 Mile? They're work boot - y but also dressier than most. If you want a cheaper option you can do the kilometer version.
