Buy a Kershaw. They are cheap and it'll get you into the habit of putting it on your person every day. Once you get used to it, find a blade that fits your needs the best.

I'd recommend the Kershaw Shuffle 2. It's small ,light and has a decently thick blade. The bottle opener is garbage design, but I use the spade end for prying on stuff during work.

The blade is very thick and the handle feels a bit cheap, but it cuts up cardboard boxes and opens bottles, which is all I need it to do. You can get one for $16.99 with Amazon Prime.

Comes in a few colors. Includes bottle opener.

Does it have to be spring assisted? Most spring assists are there to make up for bad manufacturing/cheap parts and are more likely to fail in many cases, and beyond that I personally can't come up with a multitool that does that.

I can think of several knives that have various tools built in or multi tools built to be operated with one hand though:

That's really awesome. I only ask because it's an affordable knife and usually that adjective doesn't end up in the same sentence as Damascus.

Maybe I missed the market though and it's more common, but in any case great knife, I might pick that one up.

Only concern I have is it keeping am edge. I've only ever had one kershaw knife (Kershaw Shuffle II (8750BLKBW); Blackwash Multifunction Folding Pocket Knife, 2.6 In. 8Cr13MoV Stainless Steel Tanto Blade, Includes Thumbstud and Reversible Pocketclip; 3 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TUCPWZM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf), and it didn't show with nor hold a edge very well. However, it's an entirely different price point, and metal for that matter, so I'm wondering if that makes a difference.

It's technically a pry bar but it can be used for bottle opening.

I used to own one before I lost it (because go figure) and it's a solid EDC knife

Edit: Sorry, didnt see if it was available in the UK, my bad :(

$15: [Kershaw Shuffle II] (https://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-8750TBLKBW-Shuffle-Folding-BlackWash/dp/B00TUCPWZM)

$40: [Kershaw Leek] (https://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Leek-Knife/dp/B00P2LAQ4W)

$65: [Spyderco Delica] (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica4-Lightweight-Ground-PlainEdge/dp/B0052HQPWS)

The knives I linked are all folding locking knives. The shuffle would be harder to sharpen because of the tanto style blade.

For sharpening, most people either get the [Spyderco Sharpmaker] (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Tri-Angle-Sharpmaker/dp/B004HIZKHE) or the [Lansky Diamond Stone System] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B8L6LS/ref=sxts2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483915806&sr=2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65). If you get the Lansky system, get the pedestal to go with it else your hands will be cramping.

Honestly I suggest getting a knife under $100. Once you get over $100 you start getting into supersteels. Supersteels are hard to sharpen for beginners and if you don't know what you're doing, you're likely to ruin the edge.

You don't need a serrated edge. Most folks here would recommend against it even if you did want to cut rope.

For cleaning and caring, I just put a drop of gun oil on the blade and mechanism. You don't really need to do this though. Unless you see rust or your knife is having trouble opening, you could skip it.

Ha, seeing my brackets in my previous comment, I think I meant to link it, but fucked up. Probably drunk or something. Anyway, this is the one I got. Similar to the one the other guy linked but I think that one is a little smaller.

I had a similar problem with picking a knife that wasn't huge and bulky in the pocket. I randomly came across the Kershaw Shuffle a few months back and love it. The knife is small enough where you can barely feel it clipped to your pocket and it still looks nice enough where people have given me compliments on it. I own the first generation shuffle but the shuffle 2 has a better look imo. Super cheap for a quality knife.
