Where do you live that your home is not subject to code? You are misinformed. There is an extensive code book that deals with residential structures. There is a entire govt body that deals with permits, inspections and code review. You have friends who visit and plan to sell your home? Better be inspected and have a Certificate of Occupancy. Need to have that to get Insurance on your home. Code is basically how to build a home without killing the future occupants. Code is the basic minimums for a safe home.

He didn't invent shit. DC and nearly everywhere else has a housing shortage.

The permitting process has gotten too long, the NIMBYs have gotten too strong, and the price of materials is just wrong.

And now that I have stopped trying to rhyme, have you seen the latest version of the building code, holy crap it sits at 700 pages and the type is small. And by the way it doesn't include the residential code which sits at 902 pages and the energy conservation code

Point being: building shit is just too hard and too expensive.
