This $7 3rd-party remote has been working fine for the last month.

Quick recommendations for Pentax newcomers:

Get a WR body - one of the real advantages of Pentax. WR is one of those things you don't think you need but once you have it you don't want to give it up.

First lenses:

DA 35 AL - Beautiful little lens that is perfect for walking around or hanging with friends.

DA 50 - Nifty Fifty companion to the DA 35. On and APS-C body it is a short tele.

DA 55-300WR - taking full advantage of WR requires WR lenses. If you dint get one with the body, buy this.

Accessories:

YN-560-II - Manual strobe. Lots of power, lots of flexibility.

Cactus v5 triggers - pair them with a couple of YN-560 for off camera flash.

OP/TECH Pro Loop Strap - Like every other camera maker, the Pentax strap is unusable. Get this and save your neck

IR Remote - thanks for the reminder from /u/brocuddlez - Don't spend $25+ for the official Pentax one.

I'm not doing professional work, I'm a hobbyist, but without a way to change the flash settings remotely I'm hindering my creativity on where I can place the flash and how many flashes I can use at once.

As a hobbyist I regretted buying the RF603 once I was limited and I now recommend the TX over it because of the frustration of limitations with it for creative lighting.

Again though, I've done self-portraits and used a cheap $10 wireless trigger. I have this one specifically and it works well enough.

I believe buying a remote shutter is somewhat akin to buying HDMI cables - most if not all will work just fine. I bought this one on Amazon (not necessarily this seller), and the remote worked just fine. It had an instant response and it was compatible with the camera's bulb more so you can click the button once for open and once for close shutter. Remember, Pentax DSLRs use infrared signals so you have to use the remote within the front sensor's field of view.

Buying polarizing filters is a different issue. There is a general correlation between price and quality when it comes to filters although I personally have not really invested into buying quality filters yet. I think the important thing is to get one that is multi-coated because they are better at handling things like glare and they are usually more scratch resistant.

Generally, the two respected filter brands are B+W and Hoya.

Hoya's hierarchy from high to low: (Pro1D), Super HMC (S-HMC), Ultra, HMC, Standard

B+W's hierarchy for CP filters is really confusing: XS-Pro Kaesemann MRC, Slim Kaesemann MRC, Digital Pro Kaesemann MRC, Kaesemann MRC, Digital Pro MRC, Slim MRC, Circular Polarizer MRC, Circular Polarizer (non-MRC), Digital Pro (non-MRC), Slim (non-MRC)

At least, that is how it is MSRP-wise. Anyways, I don't think you can really go wrong with any B+W MRC or Hoya HMC (and up) filters.

I am not quite sure about other brands. I know Heliopan prices their filters in the mid to high range so I would just stick with a similar priced Hoya or B+W filter. Cokin and Tiffen offer cheaper alternatives, and I believe they are decent for what you pay for. I would definitely just stay away from Quantaray and Promaster.

Lastly, make sure you buy the right size filter for you lens. I assume this is for your kit 18-55mm so make sure you get a 52mm sized filter.
