Keeping a brick in the cage (preferably in a high-traffic area) may help file down sharp little nails. Bricks can trap urine and may be difficult to clean, though. Lava ledges in place of ramps can also help keep nails in check.

There are a lot of possible factors that may contribute to bumblefoot. Wire flooring, in itself, isn't necessarily going to lead to bumblefoot but it's still wise to cover them. Wire flooring places uncomfortable pressure on rats feet and studies show that they prefer a solid floor. When dealing with flooring, your main concern should be hygiene. You don't want your rats walking/laying around in their own urine. The reason fleece is often used is because it is not absorbent and urine travels through it, leaving the surface dry. If you cover the platforms with something solid like cheap vinyl tiles, your rats will leave puddles that will end up soiling their feet, fur, and tails. Cardboard would at least absorb most of the urine, leaving soggy spots, but it may be better than tiles. Cardboard would need to be replaced often. You could try plastic canvas. That would allow pee to drain but wouldn't be as hard on their feet as bare wire. I sew mats out of fleece with an inner absorbent layer. My boys mostly leave them alone. I use little curtain clips to hold them to the wire platforms.
