Unopened sets of Collector's Edition go for $2000+, and opened sets go for not much less than that (check eBay's Sold listings). There's no group "trying to pump artificially the prices now and praying for a kid to buy it later." Disparage CE cards all you want, but know that they were printed in '93 by WotC at Carte Mundi, using the same printing process and physical printing plates as Beta. Better than proxies in my book...

There are some very compelling arguments for including CE in the various eternal formats:
