I'm not a combat photographer, but I have shot in conflict situations. Riots, looting, clashes, Maoist rebels in Nepal, drug trade in Thailand, etc.

Not nearly as crazy as the combat guys. I don't know how they do it. "Press", or journalists, in many areas are shown some deference. People generally won't attack you and try to direct violence away from you as they don't want to lose the potential pity and support of those who will see the work. It's one of the benefits of being free lance or connected to a news org instead of a military org. You get a lot of tear gas, but other than in some extreme situations (ISIS, etc), if you get killed it's usually an accident.

But the combat photogs with the services are a different deal. They're in uniform. They are targets. And they push forward with their units and under orders just like everyone else. A much more dangerous proposition in most ways. You are part of the action, and you are a big target. All combat photogs require a lot of respect for what danger they face in order to help us observe and try to see into these situations. Service photogs all the more. They deserve great respect.

As far as resources go, Stacy Pearsal has written a big on combat photography that was interesting. On the environmental and technique side of things, she gives a very unique perspective.
