If processing power isn't too huge of a factor, then any of these will do fine:

11-inch Chromebooks:

  • 2nd Gen HP 11: While not as gorgeous as the 1st Gen, I would stay it's still an attractive machine. The battery claim sits at around 7-ish hours. It has the same processor and 2GB RAM as the 1st Gen HP 11, so it can lag easily if you push it. However, like the 1st Gen, I think it has an IPS display, allowing for vivid colors and better contrast levels. This is the only Chromebook with an IPS display in my list. £152
  • Asus C200: It's not colorful or anything but the design is pretty attractive. It feels durable and Asus claims an 11-hour battery life! Uses a fanless Intel Celeron processor. £186
  • Acer Chromebook 11: As far as aesthetics goes the stormtrooper black and white color might be more your sister's style. Has the same processor as the Asus Chromebook, but battery life is more around 9 hours. £199
  • Acer C720: The processor is really powerful, but it has a fan. (Although the fan rarely turns on and when it does it's very quiet). However, it feels very cheap, and out of these four Chromebooks it's arguably the ugliest. Keyboard and trackpad are really bad as well. £211
  • Dell Chromebook 11: Here we have the same processor as the Acer C720, so it's not fanless. However, the build quality is fantastic - it can easily take a beating. The design, while understated, has a really nice minimalist appeal to it. It's definitely one of the best-build Chromebooks, but it's also heavy and kind of bulky for an 11.6" laptop. But it has incredible battery life at around 11 or so hours maximum. £215

    13-inch Chromebooks:

  • Toshiba Chromebook:. Really solid build quality with an acceptable 9-hour battery life. It has the same processor as the Acer C720 and Dell 11, so it has a fan as a trade-off for being faster than the fanless models. Despite its 13-inch screen, it's rather compact and not much bigger than the 11-inch Chromebooks. Unfortunately, the 2nd-gen Toshiba Chromebook isn't hitting the UK until February if you're more interested in that one. £200
  • Asus C300:. If you really want to give your sister something colorful, take a look at this one. I'm not sure how availability is in the UK, but as you can see this one has color options. It has the same specs and build quality as the Asus C200, just with a 13.3-inch screen. $219 USD (Again not sure of the UK availability)
  • Acer 13: Best battery life of them all, with an incredible 13-hours. 1920 x 1080 display. Fanless Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, which has a very strong graphics chip that handles media consumption very well. £219

I don't know of any rental services but if you can't find a laptop rental solution you could get a chromebook while your laptop is being repaired. that way you wont fall behind on your assignments :)

heres a pretty decent one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Computers-Acer-Aspire-CB5-311-13-3-inch-Chromebook/dp/B00NWHV4E4/ref=sr_1_8?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1453184920&sr=1-8&keywords=chromebook

should cater to your paper writing needs. and you could return it if your laptop is fixed before the return window expires. good luck!

I hate to point it out but 'HD' = 1366x768. The model number is also on sale here where people have complained that 'HD' is misleading.
