I'll probably get downvoted for this, but I leave my dog in the car for short periods quite frequently. All 4 windows and a sunroof opened a minimum of 4", in temperatures no hotter than mid 70's, and with a thermometer similar to this in the car so I can monitor the peak temperature reached while I was gone. I keep a card in my wallet that says 'dog in description of car / license plate' in case anything happens. When I get back, I double check to make sure he's not panting.

I've never seen the temperature get anywhere near these 100+ temperatures that people quote, and I've never come back to find him panting. Occasionally I'll come back and hear someone looking or talking, even though he's clearly fine.

If someone lived more than an hour or so from the store, it's quite possible that their AC / power could fail while they are gone and leave their pet trapped in the heat for a much longer period of time.

Clearly this case is very different (and unacceptable), so I'm not saying you shouldn't ever intervene. I'm simply saying that I don't agree with this "you're a dick if you've ever thought of doing it" mentality that people get. It's not a problem if you use common sense.

Also, an internal thermometer is terrific (linked the one I have). Often in the mornings it feels really cold in our apartment when in reality it's 68 degrees at 5 am.

I highly recommend a digital thermometer/hygrometer like this in addition to a temp gun! A temp gun is great for measuring surface temperatures, but it's best to also have something that measures air temperature.

Also make sure you pick up an inexpensive hygrometer

Buy this, and check your humidity levels.

I have one of these downstairs across the house from the Nest. I've found the nest keeps the house within 1 degree of the assigned temperature.

I've also noticed that temperature on the Nest seems 'colder' than our old thermostat (the twist dial kind). Used to be able to leave the old one around 65 and be fine. The nest we keep at 71 during the day. But I didn't have an indoor thermometer to measure it before it was replaced.

I have a few of these and they are a decent price and seem to work.

my rule of thumbs are:

if you can see the water vapor coming out and falling to the floor, it's too high. turn it down.

if the insides of the windows are soaked, it's too high, turn it down (or your windows really suck, you'll need to address that or wipe down the condensation regularly).

aim for a level that's comfortable without cold surfaces constantly soaked.

Something you can do now is keep track of humidity levels inside and outside of the house and see how they impact your condition. We bought this ozone generator about two years ago and have been very happy with it. Our home is about 2,000sq ft with a fairly open floor plan. A single 2 hour cycle usually eliminates any odors in the home.

Our reason for purchasing one was my girlfriend and I were fairly heavy smokers and wanted to kill the stench when we had non-smokers over, so I'm not sure how much this will help your situation.

For the moisture issue, you may want to look into a dehumidifier. We own this one. It's pretty poorly rated on the Lowe's website, but we're happy with it. It saved us when our ac went out for over a week during the hot humid Missouri summer. We were able to get the humidity inside down to 30%.

You can accuratly monitor your apartments humidity with this cheap home comfort monitor.

Yeah this is the one I have. Did the salt test and that calibration kit with it and it was hitting 75%rh every time. I lucked out, a lot of folks who did reviews on amazon and walmart.com were saying theirs were way off.

So the tank looks something similar to what I have (just smaller). Does the lid slide into place? That's what it looks like in the picture at least. I have that, but I also have three locks on mine. One of them is similar to this here. The other two clips are these on amazon .


Now the size of the tank all depends on the snake. We started our retic in a 20G, but have switched him into a custom built enclosure once he outgrew it. From what I have seen, the length + width should be a tad bigger than your snake. I prefer to give them extra wiggle room to grow into, but that's also because all my snakes are super young.


I use these thermometers also from amazon. We place one on the cool, middle, and hot side. Or just the cool and hot side depending on the tank size. My toads use something different though. Since it is a tank, we had trouble keeping humidity in, but getting a larger water dish and using this tape on the OUTSIDE of the tank (so part of the screen and some of the sides) have helped tremendously. We also use a cheaper humidifier from Walmart in the room due to our climate.


I do use heat lamps at the moment until I get switched over to something else. The bulbs we use emit zero lighting and we have them connected to a temperature control thing, also found on amazon.


Now for water, you will need to get reptile drops to take out the bad stuff in tap water. That can be found online or at a local pet shop.

You would just have to modify everything for whatever type of animal you want to get. Also, the small little cage is for crickets. They go into the tubes and that's how you feed them to toads/lizards. Also, I would suggest purchases a snake from a breeder/reptile expo versus a pet store.

Yeah between calibrating your hygrometer and temperature recon, you should be able to figure out what's going on. I use one of these humidity gauges on the shelf next to my humidor so I can note humidity and temperature swings that I may not have noticed.

One other thing I'd take a stab at based on your post is that the humidity tubes didn't do this while the Bovedas did? Maybe the Bovedas dried out, maybe they were old when you bought them?

It seems like as soon as the heat turns off, the ambient temperature around the thermostat is dropping very quickly.
