I used to do earplugs but the ear wax part of it is no good. I switched over to white noise machines and haven't looked back.

Yea I love dogs too and have one myself, so I felt like a horrible person wishing they would die, but I did. Being jarred awake like that everyday wears you down and you start to lose it a bit.

Here is the one we got. I think part of the reason it works for us though is because the neighbor's dogs are hounds and this machine has a low frequency hum that matches perfectly with their particular bark. So a yipper may not blend in as well.

I'd really suggest the Lectrofan over anything with moving parts.

Here's The Wirecutter's breakdown on why the suggest it.

Slightly more expensive but I can’t recommend this white noise machine highly enough. We bought it for our baby but 10 minutes in the room with it on and I start nodding off.

This thing is GREAT, best white noise machine I've found so far.

Get a white noise generator:

Adjust the sound so that you don't hear your tinnitus

I feel your pain. Been suffering for nearly two months now after an ear infection and have gotten no helpful feedback from ENT. I do like this sound machine.

I find music too distracting during sex. My husband and I turn this on pointed toward the doorway if we want a sound barrier between us and our nosy kids.

You can’t kick the roommate out of the common space. He may be listening to you two get it on, but that’s something that falls to you to prevent if he’s just chilling on the couch in a shared area.

I use one of these to help drown out my tinnitus.

I suppose it's probably an MP3 player on the inside, but it sounds good to me and has many different variations you can try.

I have one of these thingies for when I sleep:

Best purchase I've ever made. It helps block out so many relatively quiet sounds, including breathing when I sleep in the same room as someone. Though more often, it helps to block out the sound of cars going by. If you can afford it, I recommend it. Or like others have said, you can try an actual fan or play fan noise on your laptop. Rainymood is also great, if rain/waves/etc works as white noise for you.

You can try a sound machine, like a LectroFan. It helped me quite a bit and I haven't needed it for awhile now and have just been using my fan on the lowest setting. Hopefully that's good news for me, but I try not to get my hopes up too high.... :P
