The Adventure Time comics by KaBOOM Studios. They're written by the same guy that does Dinosaur Comics. This is the first volume, which has the first story arch in it which I believe is the first four issues You can buy the individual ones too of course. There are 31 issues thus far.
I've said in this sub before that they're amazing many times, but I won't stop heh.
For the Fiona and Cake fans, of which there certainly are many, there's a spinoff written by Natasha Allegri
There's also a spinoff with Marceline, her band and Princess Bubblegum.
On Amazon, it says it will be available on November 6.
I just googled it and this came out: http://imgur.com/a/kVJ4V
There's definitely comics out there for kids between 10 and 12. Here's some books I recommend:
I would not recommend any of the comics under the New 52 banner, they are mostly focused towards older teens and adults. Look for comics that advertise themselves as "All Ages", those are going to be the best for your age group.
Warning! Long-as-shit recommendation post incoming!
Halo:
There are several ones published by Marvel, haven't read any but my friend, whose a big Halo fan liked Halo: Blood line by Fred Van Lente
Mass Effect:
These are all written by Mac Walters, the lead writer of Mass Effect 3
Star Wars:
They have 25$ omnibii for most of the series they've made, except for the new Legacy, Star Wars by Brian Wood and Dawn of the Jedi.
Lighthearted books:
Sci-Fi:
There are also several Firefly/Serenity comics if that your thing, they are all good.
The best place to start is the current Superior Spider-man, Which stars a slightly different Peter Parker

EDIT: cleaned up a bit.
EDIT 2: Links, added links to digital version where I couldn't find floppies or HC/TPB that had come out yet. Reading Digital comics on a Tablet is recommended. Dark Horse has their own app, and Comixology has most publishers except Dark Horse and some smaller ones.

Adventure Time comics!
Actually, if you're in the UK/EU, shipping is free/reasonable, and the first TPB is at a very nice price. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801
A few more months until it's released though. (it comes out on my birthday! Mathmatical!)
Thank you for the contest!
Fun, thanks for hosting the scavenger hunt!
Edit: Finished! I love scavenger hunts; it always reminds me what a weirdo I am.
> Picture books and chapter books appreciated! :)
Does that include graphic novels? Finding comic books for kids that feel like 'standard' fantasy (swords & sorcery/high fantasy) has been surprisingly challenging. Oddly enough, the only one that I've found that really fits is the comic book version of A Link to the Past: https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Link-Past/dp/1421575418/
For non-standard fantasy that still uses many standard fantasy tropes, I really like Adventure Time: https://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801/
And of course further off the path there's also Bone, Usagi Jimbo, and Amulet.
on amazon
also, i work for barnes and noble and thought id snag an employee discount if theyre out, but it states the same release date on our site =/
Do you know what they're called? I remember finding something similar but it wouldn't give me info on what issues they have.
Is this right? http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377484681&sr=8-1&keywords=adventure+time+comic
If you don't want it digitally, you're much better off getting the trade paperbacks, rather than the single issues.
This has the first 4 issues: http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Vol-Ryan-North/dp/1608862801
