I bought an Akai MIDIMix specifically for Lumen. Works great. If I had my absolute top controller for it, though, it would be a Behringer BCR2000. So many endless rotaries!
That has a single XLR input, and onboard effects. Doesn't seem very flexible to me. For the price, I'm not at all interested.
Unless you are specifically wanting an 'all in one' outboard solution like that, which requires quite a bit of compromise in terms of price, flexibility, and usually quality... I personally would rather go with a modular solution and software effects, as that would remove all limitations and be more easily upgraded at a later date... Not to mention it would be cheaper.
Free effects are abundant on Linux. A nice all-inclusive option would be something like Guitarix. It's a full suite of 'guitar' effects (which would work fine for vocals as well.)

So if you went with the Scarlett Solo + Akai MidiMix, you'd have more flexibility, better preamps, and more easily portable setup for less than half the price.
With the Behringer options listed above, it would be 1/4 the price, again with all the benefits I listed.

Reckon I'd be able to map to those controls, rather than keystrokes?
I'd like to be able to, for example, map one of the knobs to Contrast in photoshop, so I could easily edit photographs quickly without going through menus...
I assume if I could do this in one Adobe program I'd be able to do it in others...
$50 - Pyle mini has knobs, faders, buttons. I haven't tried it but considered getting it as a second controller next to my apc40mkii. Small size would be good for travel but still would want to get a cover for it.

$100 akai midimix this was also one I considered. Lots of knobs and faders. Boring buttons but all you need.

If I had to buy my first again, I'd still get the akai apc40 mkii. Every pro VJ I see at the shows I go to use this it seems, the midi fighters also I see a lot and those are sweet but expensive.
Ok, after messing around it seems easy enough for a midi controller, but looks like I might be out of luck mapping it to my arrow keys.

Think that'd be too much? I would love to have 3 knobs per channel completely free to assign a band's freq, gain, and bandwidth at the same time. Would I be able to achieve the same thing with the Novation? Would the higher price be worth it for quality?
EDIT: Sorry to ask another question, but do you know if it's possible to save presets for the knobs in the Novation so I could switch between controlling EQ, comp, and pan without remapping? Is it possible to use multiple columns to control FX parameters for one track? Used to live mixers so the possibilities are kinda hitting me.
