Here's my copy/pasted response to this sort of question because it comes up so damn often.

---

Get a pair of headphones and a mic.

If you want surround sound with your headphones, go for the Asus Xonar DG($24) as your sound card. It is very inexpensive and offers Dolby Headphone(ie, it allows you to have virtual surround sound on any pair of headphones - certain headphones work better with this than others, check out this thread at Head-Fi for a plethora of headphones reviewed with Dolby Headphone in mind).

As for the microphone, the common choice is the Zalman zm-mic1($9). Another great choice if you want a better microphone is the Antlion ModMic($33).

As for the headphones, this is a very personal thing. Do you want to be able to accurately pinpoint the location of footsteps in first person shooters? Go for something that is reviewed well by Mad Lust Envy in his thread. Good choices would be the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, the AKG K701/K702/Q701, the Sennheiser HD558/HD598. All of these are open headphones, which tend to be better if you want positional accuracy, but if you'd prefer a closed pair, the Beyerdynamic DT770/DT880(partially open) are rather good. Keep in mind that the Beyers and the AKGs should not be used without an external amp. The other ones should be fine to run off the sound card.

If you don't need pristine positional accuracy in first person shooters, you could go for a huge number of different headphones to suit your tastes. Here is a great thread on Head-Fi comparing many different headphones.

AKG-702's typically as they are fucking awesome, although as a gamer I also have a pair of Logitech G35 headphones which I used to use which aren't as bad as you might expect.

I also have some Klipsch Image S2's which I like for work where I can't have sound blasting around

u/Jo3M3tal · 9 pointsr/headphones

>i dont want online buys.

This is going to hurt you pretty bad if you don't have a store near you that will sell quality headphones.

Beats by Dre have sound quality that is rivaled or trumped by $100-$150 headphones. On top of that, they are exhausting to listen to. I got a pair as a gift a year ago or so, couldn't have been more disappointed. The only reason to get them would be if you don't care about the quality of bass, existence of treble, and you desperately need to look cool.

I have a pair of these and the sound quality is night and day. Incredibly comfortable, much more accurate bass.

You don't need to get those specifically. Check out the sidebar for the headphone recommendations. You also need to decide what is important to you in your headphones.

Or just buy the K702s from Amazon now and get them primed to your house tomorrow for ~£30 less…

u/Diaggen · 3 pointsr/headphones

AKG 701/702's or Senn 598's are both good choices in the $250 to $280 price range. The Senn's are more comfortable for long listening (headband on the AKG's can be hard on the head) but I prefer the sound of the AKG's. I will note that the AKG's require quality amplification. Laptops/sound-cards/MP3 players aren't going to do these any favors.

ATH-M50's are a popular choice more in the price range of the mdr-xb500's. Not having owned either of the Sony's or the M50's I can only go off reviews. I get the impression however that they have about the same bass accenting characteristics.

The ATH-AD700's I think are a really good all around headphone, especially at just over $100. The purple throws some people off, but it grows on you. I use this set for everything from late night gaming, tv/movie watching, and of course listening to music.

I'd recommend using these as a starting point. Read some reviews on Head-Fi or amazon (many head-fier's post reviews there, especially on quality or popular headphones).

The AKG K702 are a good alternative in the same price range.

u/snuflswasmyslavename · 3 pointsr/headphones

What you're missing is the AKG K702, which is 124 GBP on amazon.co.uk. You'll need to use a mini-XLR to 3.5mm jack to fit the BoomPro. And yes, it's worth going over 100€ for them.

Since you're in Germany I have to point out that there's a seller offering Logitech UE6000 for 35€ on amazon.de. Excellent value for money and they fit the BoomPro. Not in the same league as K702, but if you're looking to save money it's an amazing deal.

Right now I am using an audioquest dragonfly black dac, ath m50x headphones, and my macbook pro when I am home and a galaxy s7 and my ath m50x when I am not. I just ordered AKG Pro Audio K702 headphones so that will replace my ath m50x for home use.

u/ressis74 · 2 pointsr/headphones

I have both the HD280s and SRH-840. The SRH-840 is more flat, but has far less noise isolation.

With the 840s I can still hear people talking nearby. With the 280s there was nothing but music.

The SRH feels light, but it has survived 3 years of daily use in the office (I'm fairly gentle to it). The 280 felt more solid, but I haven't used that in 3 years (wife took it). My wife is very hard on the 280s. They still work. The cable is all but destroyed, but the drivers and headband still looks mint.

A bit above your price range is the AKG K702; it is often ~$250. These sound flatter than the SRH, but that might be because I have a better listening environment at home. I got mine for $160 a couple years ago. You could also wait for the K7XX mass drop to come back. The K7XX and K702 are apparently the same headphone, but the K7XX is cheaper.

I've heard that the AKG Q701 is also the same headphone, and currently it's <$200 on Amazon. I don't have the Q701 though, and I haven't compared the two.

u/1zacster · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

Yup - sorry, I should have added my recommendations.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-Reference-Open-Back-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B001RCD2DW

I use these, AGK K702. I was recommended them by a chap who has 20-30 years experience as a mix/mastering engineer in London and owns two studios. He has tens of thousands of pounds worth of monitoring equipment, but he says these are the most consistent headphones hes ever used and has created some of his best mixes on them.

He recommended I paired it with a Project Headbox II:
https://www.project-audio.com/en/product/head-box-s2/

I am similar positive to OP - I have KRK G3 6s which are far too big for my flat. Surrounded both sides by neighbors but more to the point the room shape is awful for monitoring - no chance to get a flat response. Headphones are my only way to produce & mix.

u/91ronnie · 2 pointsr/headphones

Also on amazon.it the price of both K702 and K712 is very good: 129€ for the first one and 229€ for the second one, but the K712 is not sold by Amazon.

u/NathanielsBeats · 2 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

I don't know much about that, but the stereo field for the AKG 702 is really solid.

TDLR: get a decent set of headphones otherwise they will sound like shit.

I heard these are good [http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Siberia-Full-Size-Gaming-Headset/dp/B002Q8IHDQ], but until I put them on and test them, I am not buying another set of headphones

u/Mshenay · 2 pointsr/headphones

AKG and the K7XX is NOT a K702, and you can get the K702 for slightly less than the K7XX :/ go figure

Non the less, the K7XX has a bit more bass and also a bigger dip in the upper mid range, it's also more efficent to drive but more distorted in the low end. But the K7XX distorts less at like 100 dB. The K702 on the other hand has a little less bass and better distortion at like 90 dB though if you push the K702 much louder than that it turns to shit pretty quick. So if your listening or mastering/mixing louder than 90dBs then likely the K7XX will do better, and while I'm nit picking I didn't like the K7XX much when I heard it... too bassy but I enjoy the K702

Though a close friend of mine likes his K702 with a slight bass boost so I'm sure there are a lot of people like your self that will appreciate the slightly revised tuning of the K7XX, that and the improved efficiency make it better suited for the modern state of Hi Fi listening

I primarily listen to classical music and 70s/80s rock. I have about 400 USD available for the phones and any needed accessories.

They would be run off of my ASUS Xonar Essence STX Sound Card.

u/MelonSponge · 2 pointsr/headphones

Budget - £100 to £200 (UK).

Source - Desktop PC, possibly a laptop too.

Requirements for Isolation - Not much, will be using at home which is a quiet environment, won't want much leakage either.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - No.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full sized over ear (I have largish ears so would like the phones to rest on my skull rather than the ears themselves).

Preferred tonal balance - Neutral/Balanced.

Past headphones - Haven't had a 'proper' pair of headphones before, currently using the Logitech G430.

Preferred Music - Diverse tastes, however I'm particularly a fan of classic rock (Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd etc).

I have noticed that the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X is widely recommended as a first step on the serious headphone user ladder, and seems to match my requirements. They are available for £125 on amazon here.

However, the AKG K702 (which I understand is a few tiers higher than the M50X) is also available on amazon here for £129, which seems like a very small price to pay for such an upgrade. I would have to get an amp to run these to their full potential of course, but would I be stupid to get the M50X instead?

As a side note, I have also been interested by the Sennheiser RS165, which is available on amazon here for £149. Are these at all comparable in terms of quality to the two headphones above?

Thanks in advance for any help, sorry if I'm so obviously a n00b!

u/daft_babylone · 2 pointsr/france

u/sexy_devil · 2 pointsr/SteelyDan

Thanks for the suggestions. If I was to later go the route of headphone amps and things, what/which would you recommend?

Edit: Do you think that these are worth getting at this price? They are only like £20 more than the K701's so I'm just wondering if they are worth that increase?

Edit 2: I've just realised that they are only like £4 more expensive than the K701's so I'm thinking I'll just get these. What amp and things would you specifically recommend for this pair of headphones?

u/KyleRob07 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Take a look at HiFiMan HE-400, they are $299 on amazon, with the [AKG K702] (http://www.amazon.com/AKG-K702-Headphones/dp/B001RCD2DW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=akg+k702) being $219. Thats right around $500.

For amps, I would recommend the O2, which is $129.

u/G_Sully · 2 pointsr/headphones

Probably not the best bet for classical. They are too bass oriented in my opinion.

What's your budget? For around $100 the Audio-Technica Ad700 are great. For $200ish I would look at the Audio-Technica Ad900. If you can spring for about $250 the AKG K702 is widely considered one of the best options by classical lovers. Plan on looking at an amp for the K702s to really let them stretch their legs.

If you want to spend more let us know. Classical gear can get real pricey, real fast.

u/mindkilla123 · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

About a month ago, I bought a pair of these and I enjoy them very much but they're open design(no sound isolation) so I thought of buying some closed headphones for when I go out....

But then I realized, when do I go out? The only time I do is to catch the bus to school. Do I want people looking at me like i'm an idiot because I have these big, expensive headphones from a brand they've never heard of?

Forever alone with music =/

u/WavyCrusade · 2 pointsr/headphones

Budget - 100-200 Euro price range

Source - Google Pixel and Desktop Computer

Isolation - Just don't want them to leak to much sound

Preferred type of headphone - Overear. Wired

Past headphone - I've never had headphones before. I don

Preferred music - HipHop, Rnb, and 60s-early80s rock.

Improve - I am looking for something that has low impeadence so I hopefully won't have to use an external amp with but I have heard the pixel's sound output is bad.
If I need to get an external amp/DAC or something to make something 60 or 32 ohms work for the pixel i'll get one.

Country - Ireland

You're working professionally, get a pro solution. I use AKG K702's everyday in my studio to check tracks and mixes, they are totally flat sounding and very comfortable. 770s are great if you want a bit more low end thickness and isolation but may be more fatiguing for long term use.

I'm new to this sub and am yet to get myself a set of headphones or an amp/DAC. I will mostly be using them for gaming although I do listen to music from time to time. From what I have read so far I've started to consider getting the following equipment.

Would this combination be good for gaming or should I consider alternatives.

Thanks for the help guys :)

u/BigSerene · 1 pointr/buildapc

The choice will probably depend on what sort of music you listen to and from what sources. Here are a lot of video reviews of headphones with different features and at different price points. (I doubt the prices in that table are kept up to date, so it's probably worth checking on any that are near your budget that sound good.)

Personally, I've got AKG K702's, which are well under your budget and I really like them.

u/robtype0 · 1 pointr/headphones

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've found the 250 OHM 990s for £111
here. This seems like a ridiculously good deal going by what you've said. Am I missing something?

The K702s are around £40 more, as per [here.] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-K702-Open-Back-Reference-Headphones/dp/B001RCD2DW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420292582&sr=8-1&keywords=AKG+K702)
As far as I can tell, there's not a a huge difference between these and the Q701s.

Am I right in thinking that they have less of a pronounced bass response than the DT990s? Would you say the better positional is worth the extra? As it is, I'm leaning towards the DT990s.

I'm looking for some good headphones which can be used for music producing and screwing around in FL Studios. Maybe some DJ-ing.
I mainly listen to electronic music. I'd like if there could be no to little sound leaking. Or maybe there could? I wouldn't really mind some, but not too much.

My budget is 200-300 $ and I'm trying to find some good deal this Black Friday, but there's just so many and any would be an upgrade for me (really, I only used pretty shitty headphones before).

The deal on Sennheiser 598 C is very tempting, but I'm also considering HD 650, Beyerdynamic 990 PRO, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or even these AKGs. Seems like a good price.

I've also been recommended Sennheiser 25 HD II and I'm really lost between all these stuff. Would HD 8 also be worth a check?
I'd like it balanced, but to pull on the side of electronic music.

Im located in Europe so I mainly check amazon.de, it and uk for deals.

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

558 is a very good choice. you may also consider the 702

u/Mjolnir12 · 1 pointr/headphones

This is the more reasonably priced product listing for them:

Honestly though you really shouldn't pay over $200 for K702's; they hover around $220 typically but you can get brand new ones from authorized dealers for under $200 if you look hard enough.

u/pint07 · 1 pointr/playrust

I'll go from cheapest to most expensive here:

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7GM - $199

AKG K702 - $232 (I have the older version of these, the K701s, and they've been going strong for ~8 years. Can't recommend them enough.)

HIFIMAN HE-400I - $249

Sony MDR1A - $298

Monoprice Monolith M1060 - $299

Sennheiser HD 650 - $315.99

AKG K712 - $379

Most of these headphones will really shine with a little headphone amp to give them a bit more power than your computer or phone's audio output can deliver. Something like a FiiO E10k works amazing. Or the FiiO A3 for a portable solution. Or if you want something that looks a bit sexier and is more of a stay on your desk kind of thing, you can go for something like this or this. Either way, any of these headphones will blow your Bose cans away no question - like not even in the same league of sound quality.

u/dommoass · 1 pointr/Gaming_Headsets

A Game One only has impedance of 50 Ohm so you'd probably get away with just plugging it into your soundcard. You might get better results from an external amp/dac though.

With £200 though you could get a decent pair of headphones (I like the AKG K702s or the DT 990s. A ModMic 5 is around £60. Personally that's what I'd do, the quality will be noticeably higher than even the Sennheiser Game headsets.

  • Budget: £200 at most.
  • Sources: PC and my HTC One.
  • Requirements for isolation: None.
*Preferred Type of Headphones: Over ear, I hate on ears and I do not like IEMs very much.
  • Preferred Tonal Balance: Neutral, mayble slighlt warm, I'm unsure about this.
  • Past Headphones: Sony MDR-V55s These are very uncomfortable for over 30 minutes, but they sounded OK. I have some Soundmagic E10s for portable use.
  • Preferred Music: I listen to entirely rock/metal usually prog metal.
  • What I'm Currently Considering:

Sennheiser HD598 This looks quite good and is meant to be quite neutral. These are in the middle of my price range.

Beyerdynamic DT880 PRO These are meant to be very comfortable - I quite like the look of these

Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO These are similar to the DT 880s (not in sound apparently), but they are apparently more comfortable than the 880s. THey are also much cheaper than the 880s

AKG K702 The design of these is appealing and that they meant to be detailed in sound.

AKG Q701 These supposedly sound better than the K702s in that they have more bass These are the very most that I am willing to spend.
An yother suggestions would be appreciated!

Several good options on Amazon DE - there is a button to change language to english on the website.

Before we go into the options. Soundstage and imagining can help you determine where a gunshot or footsteps come from in an FPS for instance, or if there is something behind you in an RPG(Skyrim, Fallout(a mix of rpg and shooter) and in MMORPGs you can hear if the boss drops shit behind you. This is primarily regarding gaming, getting into how soundstage and imagine works in music would be too long to explain. But this is the basics.

Open back: Better soundstage and Imaging - Mostly good for FPS games(but you can hear people in the room around you)

AKG K712 - I used to both listen to music and game with these, and they are a good value

Beyerdynamic DT 880 - I use this one for all genres, though it might be too analytical for you

Audio Technica ATH-AD700x - These are absolutely amazing for FPS games, but you might find them a bit boring in the music department coming from the A40s

Closed back : These close you off from the outside world, imaging isn't as good, but you won't hear people around you as much IRL

Beyerdynamic Custon One Pro - They have a rather bass heavy sound signature, but the highs are clear and can be useful(depending on the game you play.

Sennheiser Momentum 2 Over-Ear(cabled version) - They aren't the best for shooters, but all other kinds of games they can do just fine. They are 56% off right now.

Audio Technica ATH-MSR7BK - These are highly regarded for gaming and are also an amazing all rounder for music

Audio Technica ATH-A700x - These are the closed back version of the AD700x they are good for gaming and a good all rounder, because of their closed back they have a warmer sound than the AD700x which is rather cold.

Hello everybody, since my pair of headset broke and i have enough of cheap headset, i want to buy a nice headset (and a microphone but i already which one i'll buy (a ModMic v4.0)). Here's my criterias :

  • Budget - from 0 to about 170€ (MAX)
  • Source - a regular PC, a phone...
  • Requirements for Isolation - I'll be using it at home (since there is no door on my room, you can imagine that i need a bit of isolation), at my friend's home, at my grandma's home, on the train
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM ? regular ones, a full size then i guess
  • Preferred tonal balance - An overall balanced pair of headphones
  • Past headphones - a bad Triton headset for an xbox (ear were pressed and hurt after a while), a steelseries siberia 100 (they broke), I used a Technics RP-F600 (this one was good but maybe too cheap, over-ear design was design I appreciated it)
  • Preferred Music - I listen to a lot of things, i like metal as i like rap, i like classic (Stravinsky), i like mathematic metal (Meshuggah), i like rap (Alkpote, Columbine), i like prog rock (Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes), i like rock (Steven Wilson, The Beatles, Rush, Van Halen), i like electro music (Mr.Oizo, Daft Punk), punk (Bérurier Noir), prog metal (Tool, Porcupine Tree, Opeth), etc etc etc.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Just a nice headset, with a nice balance, the nicest reproduction of what i listen to (i listen to .flac, no mp3 64kbp) if it's games, i want to have the best reproduction for the price.

Location - I live in France

I hope you can help me choose a headset, i have found one, but i'm not sure about the open-design, the headset i might buy is the AKG K-702 (not the K-701 since i heard that the bass are too light on the 701).

Thank you for help me !
u/imuya · 1 pointr/GirlGamers

tbh, I would never even consider buying Astros. Steelseries is fine if you're just looking for a cheap low to mid end headset. I wouldnt seriously consider them if your budget is significantly higher than most of their offerings.

I would get something like AKG-702's, and then spend the extra 50-100 on a nice stand-alone microphone.

the Sennheiser PC 363D arent bad, I think Ohpond recently bought a pair of Sennheisers that have the same drivers. She might have an opinion on them.

u/Uhud · 1 pointr/headphones

I'm kind of new to the world of quality headphones, but I have always appreciated the art. The most I have had are a random pair of cheap headphones from my local store, and the crappy apple earpods. So its time for a change. I've spent quite a few weeks learning and researching about headphones in general, I have visited the /r/headphones' Purchase Assistant which was not only very helpful but also helped me understand what I want. After it all, I have narrowed down the selection to a handful of potential headphones which I think are suitable for my specific needs. I have included my list below, after some useful information for you guys to understand me better..about my headphone needs:

  • Budget - £100 - £400. I can push it up couple of quids if needed. But ideally, something that is best value for money. Currency: Pound Sterling.

  • Source - Going to be plugging the headphones into my PC. As far as I know, there's nothing special about my motherboard (MSI Gaming 5) so I wouldn't be too fussed if the headphones require a DAC and AMP, as long as headphones + dac/amp doesn't go too much above my budget.

  • Requirements for Isolation - As much as I like the idea of complete isolation, I cannot afford to do so. Since I will only be using these at home, there are times when I will need to respond to phone calls, door bells, conversations, people chatting shit about me, etc. so I can't completely isolate myself. Sound leak is fine - I have my own room. Long story short: Open back headphones are be ideal.

  • Will I use these Headphones in Public? Nope. Home set up only.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear/Full sized (that's what she said)

  • Preferred Use of Headphone - The main aim for these headphones will be gaming > movies > music in that order. Games: Single players as well as competitive multiplayers. Solely based on what I have read, when it comes to gaming, headphones with a large soundstage would be ideal as long as there is localization/imaging present to accurately portray where the sound is coming from. This is best achieved by open back headphones. However, one particular thread on tomshardware made me doubt what I understood. TL;DR of that post: open back headphones with big soundstage create too much echo, effectively making the localization much worse because you don't know where the sound is coming from - especially in an already echoey environment of a game. They recommended closed-back. This is probably where I will need input the most, from guys who have tested both types of headphones for this specific use. When it comes to music, yes I will definitely be using them for music but not as much? Music type is usually theme songs of games and movies, classical, vocal, and random stuff people suggest on internet.

  • Preferred tonal balance - As mentioned above, since its mostly games with not as much music, and even in music, its pretty random I think it would be best if the signature is balanced, neutral, flat? The word flat makes it sound boring..

  • Past headphones - Crappy cheap earphones not worth mentioning.

So that's basically what I have deduced for myself, at least what I think I want. Based on the above, below is a list of headphones I think fits my needs. However, a few are included in the list simply because of their songs of praise all over the internet.

  • AKG K702 Reference Open-Back Over-Ear Studio Headphones

  • Audio-Technica Professional Open-Back Reference Headphone - Black

  • Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium Edition HiFi Headphone - Fully Open Backed Construction

  • Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Headphones - Black Limited Edition

  • HIFIMAN HE-400i Full-Size Planar Magnetic Headphone

  • HIFIMAN HE400S Over Ear Full-Size Planar Magnetic Headphone

  • Sennheiser HD 650 Audiophile Open-Back Dynamic Headphones

AKG K702 and DT 990 Pro seem to be inexpensive at Amazon UK right now. Don't know how well your Xonar card will drive them however.

u/SirSpooks · 1 pointr/headphones

A dumb question, im not sure if this is the correct place to ask.

Howdy! I was looking into buying a pair of K702s and would like a portable amp. I have been recommended the Fiio E18 for them. Just to confirm, since this is my first amp that I am buying, want really dont want to mess it up, the E18 would work fine for the K702s, right?

Thank you!

I've been looking at quite a few things while I was away from my computer.

I'm leaning towards a Modi 2 Uber (toslink for my PS4 audio) combined with a Magni 2.

My main concern is shitty drivers - I want to bypass any Creative/Asus drivers where possible. The Schiit drivers are relatively simple and well-maintained hopefully.

Secondly it appears that I may start using headphones more, however I will still want speakers as an option as well.

So I'm turned on by the Schiit stack idea, however I have some questions.

  1. The Magni 2 Uber comes with 'pre-amp outputs' whatever they are. Does this allow me to link the Magni to speakers? I would almost certainly be buying pretty decent self-powered ones. I saw the JBL LSR305s being recommended in another thread. Do I need another unit to link the Magni to powered speakers? Or can I just hook them up? If so, does the Magni possess some kind of switching to allow me to switch between headphones and speakers?

  2. Gaming on the Modi/Magni stack doesn't have any surround sound that would be created by a comparable sound card (Sound Blaster ZX for example), so does this make it a lot worse for gaming? I'm not a Counter-Strike professional or anything so I'm not terribly concerned about lack of surround audio, but I do want a good aural experience in FPS games like the recent Prey for example. I just don't particularly want a 'gaming-only' setup, and as I've explained before I detest the driver issues that come with Creative/Asus sound cards.

  3. What headphones? I was looking at the AKG K702 and the AKG K712 Pro they look pretty good and Mad Lust Envy rated them quite well but I wonder if it's not worth spending a bit more cash to get Sennheisers... he rates them better than Sennheisers if anything though? The HD 650 is about 150 dollars more than the K12 Pro sooo....

You dont need anything that expensive for listening to music. If you are recording music, ok i understand. But you can get a very high quality set for <$150. I have a set of Creative Labs that i paid $90 for and they sound great.

If i was to spend way too much on head phones though: Headphones

u/hamburglin · 1 pointr/headphones

I'd debate how effective gaming chairs are vs their counterparts (such as this one with a breathable back and proper lumbar adjustments among other features) but that's for another time.

Gaming headphones are overly priced. They are made for a niche market that assumes there are some sort of special factors going into these headphones for them vs "normal" people. This usually just means it's USB connected, comes accompanied with useless software, and has some form of lame surround sound.

For example, mostly everything on this list is overshadowed by the main players in the mid range headphone market: AKG, Sennheiser and BeyerDynamic.

Hope that helps.

u/sonicgamingftw · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'm just a guy who plays video games and listens to music wanting to upgrade his "gaming" headset to an actual decent pair of headphones instead of just following this expensive trend of buying any headset with "gaming" in the title. I want some more quality (on a decent budget) in my music life, and my gaming life (I like to play Osu along with my shooters). My budget is probably about $180 as I was considering buying [these headphones] (https://www.amazon.com/AKG-Pro-Audio-Channel-Headphones/dp/B001RCD2DW/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1524950716&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=akg+k702&psc=1) and I'm still looking at them as I hear they are pretty good quality. I know pretty much nothing about audio quality and all these nice things, but what I do know is I like over ear, open back headphones with surround sound. Is there anything that I might be able to get for this price range? Sorry that this is very picky, thank you to anyone who can help out!

u/MrDeebus · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Since I went through the same mess recently:

AKG K702 is €110 on amazon.de right now, incredible price for what it is. AKG's website lists it at $349 but that seems unrealistic, but I couldn't find it on amazon.com so whatever (edit: I actually found it and didn't realize, and it's $200 in the US!). It's really a good starting point in my opinion since it's so "unopinionated". It's also astonishingly comfortable, it's super lightweight so you barely feel the headband. In comparison the Fidelio X2 is like a brick on my head. For the genres you listed, in my experience so far, metal can be meh (depends really, right now I have Baying of the Hounds playing and it's alright), jazz is very enjoyable (but "jazz"?? depends even more)... if I'm understanding what you mean by "acoustic chill" correctly that's totally fine. EDM I don't really listen to, but I do listen to techno/tech house/deep house and it's an interesting experience. It doesn't move your head like the music sometimes aims to do, but you can actually listen to everything that's going on, so that's nice to have if you're interested. It's excellent with trance since there's so much going on all the time and now you can follow it all.

That leaves you enough room to get a JDS Atom for €170 [1] and then €97 for a DAC... I'm quite happy with my FX Audio DAC-X6; but if you already wrote off that budget, Topping D30 is way superior in the audiosciencereview measurements. Then again the consensus seems to be that the difference would not be audible -- I haven't used another DAC myself so I don't have an opinion on this. And don't rely on X6's amp (since you already have the budget), e.g. the reduction in background noise was very obvious going from X6 alone to X6+Atom.

[1]: yes it's twice the price in EU compared to US unfortunately. No it's not an amazon reseller ripoff, shipping + tax already comes close and then you don't have to deal with customs etc.

more edit: I just saw that you said you're from Turkey. Do you live there? How do you plan to use amazon.de (with the new zero-allowance customs policy etc.), ship to Turkey or someone in Germany/EU receives and brings to you? I'm asking because in your case it might be better to order directly from JDS. You would have to deal with customs yourself though, I imagine that's huge trouble if you're not in İstanbul.

Budget - 100GBP +- 30 GBP

Source - Laptop and Nexus 5X

Requirements for Isolation - Some would be nice but not too necessary.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes, running and just walking to uni, I want to listen to my Spotify playlist on my phone.

Preferred Type of Headphone - I don't know how it's called but something like this

Preferred tonal balance - I am fine with balanced type.

Past headphones - Earphones from company called MediaDevil

Preferred Music - Classical, rock, trance etc.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - The build - I have problems with those flimsy cables and audio connector itself, they seem flimsy and can easily bend in my pocket. That's how old earphones got destroyed even with me trying to not put phone in a position that bends the connector.

I still highly recommend good headphones. Like, real ones. Good, clear and detailed audio boosts the experience the same way better graphics, higher resolutions and higher framerates make the visual experience better, except sound can be rendered to seem a whole lot more believable.

Outside of Sennheiser's gaming headsets, there are no good gaming headphones marketed as such. I've tried quite a few different brands, including the Astros (A50s) and have never really been impressed.

The Astros especially fall way short of their claims as well as failing to deliver sound on par with their asking price.

I forgot that quite a few headphones have seen recent hikes in prices, largely due to the post-beats uptake of actual quality listenting (people willing to spend more on audio, but looking for something that doesn't ruin sound the way beats do).

The audio technica ad700 have a fair MSRP for the sound they make: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

I don't really know what limitations consoles have for headsets, if you can connect a separate mic, or not. If you can, you can always get the zalman clip-on mic.

All that said: I highly, and very strongly, recommend you get good headphones. As I do for anyone interested in actually listening to quality.

Sweet headphones, but I'd personally put aside some of that cash to possibly upgrade your source.

You have the budget to get both a NuForce Icon HD and a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-880 600-ohm, AKG K702, or Sennheiser HD-650 (this last one puts you about $50 over-budget before shipping). Here's an in-depth comparison of the three. They're all pretty popular among audiophiles, so you can find a lot of other, similar threads on Head-Fi.

u/DangerMous3 · 1 pointr/funny

I think people hate that they are way overpriced for the quality they give. Almost like you are paying double just for the brand name.

I have listened to them many times and I personally don't like that they "color" the sound but they aren't horrible or anything.

As an Audio Engineer, a good headphone is a headphone that doesn't color the sound and basically has a flat response.

IMO these are miles better than Beats Pro's and almost half the price.

I deleted my comment because it came off as pretty dickish. I can tell the difference between above me and below me perfectly fine with my DT990s and audio settings set to Hi-Fi. I don't know what else to tell you other than suggesting different headphones, because they make a big difference. I'd suggest AD700x, AKG K701, or AKG K702 if you want the best sound localization you can get.

With that said, there is still room for improvement within R6's sound engine.
