The brayers that come with Play Doh are pretty lightweight, not very rigid, and made from hollow or lightweight plastic. They could be used for a few things, I guess, but wouldn't be all that helpful. An acrylic brayer would be better for at least some of the uses, or a length of acrylic rod (I buy those at Tap Plastics), and for some things you could even use a smooth straight-sided glass jar or drinking glass, etc--those would be heavier and more rigid so more suitable for polymer clay than very soft Play Doh or homemade play doughs.

You can read more about those kinds of things, and perhaps more options, on these pages at my site, if interested:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/tools_Dremels_worksurfaces.htm (click on the category called Brayers, Rollers)
http://glassattic.com/polymer/pastamachines.htm (click on No Pasta Machine?--Other Ways)

Brayers/rollers would only be good for making flat sheets though, not for all the things a pasta machine can do with polymer clay, or do much more easily (conditioning the clay, mixing new colors or mixing brands, making continuous blend sheets called "Skinner blends," mixing various "inclusions" into the clay for special effects or fauxs, and various polymer clay techniques).

And cheapie pasta machines aren't all that large or expensive. Don't know where you are, but the cheapie ones are usually made in China and are often available all over the world (for around $20 U.S.).
