I prefer these ones off Amazon. They are basically rebranded Sanyo Eneloop XXs. They are high capacity (2400+ mAh) and last a very long time. They might be a smidge larger than a typical AA as they seem to fit more tightly in a few of the things I use them in, but so far I haven't had a problem. I use them anytime I need AAs, and I've got a couple in my Steam Controller right now.

Edit: Also, you'll want a decent charger, something that'll stop charging when it detects a full charge. All rechargeables will last longer that way.

Edit 2: I just removed these batteries from my Steam Controller, and it was a bit harder than I remember. I actually had to pry them out. I then snapped them back in and retried ejecting them, and they popped right out. Perhaps sitting in the controller for a while let them settle in; I'm not sure. The point is your mileage may vary on how snug they are. I still consider them usable for the controller since they last so long between having to switch them out, but if this is a deal breaker for you, consider these slightly thinner batteries instead. The capacity isn't too different (2000 mAh vs. 2400 mAh), and they're still high-quality re-branded Eneloops, just not the fatter XX.

If you have Amazon Prime then the Amazon Basics Ni-MH batteries are a better deal. They are basically rebranded Eneloops at a cheaper price, always Prime shipping available, and nice packaging. They seem to be selling them as if they are 1st gen Eneloops by advertised specs but performing and looking like 2nd gen.

These. They're 2000mAh whereas the ones that came with the lights were about half that if I recall. Mind you, these were the crappy lights that are really dim and unreliable, which is why I started this thread to find better ones. They likely last the night 'cos they really don't light anything up; you can see the lights but not anything else. "There's a wee light out there. I've no idea what's around it, but it's a light."

Amazon Basic batteries are good.

The key here is to get Low Self Discharge (Pre-Charged/Hybrid) Rechargeable batteries.

Batteries of yesteryear were horrible for low drain devices like remote controls, mice, keyboards, etc, because they drain their charge even when not being used. Modern Low Self Discharge Batteries like the Amazon Basics ones loose less than 20% of their charge after sitting a year so you can charge them up, throw them in a box, and they will be ready to use when needed unlike what most people are used to with the old ones.

I use a 16-bay charger and have been using the same early generation Tenergy PreCharged AA and AAA batteries for almost a decade now.

Seems like a "meh" deal (pardon the pun). That charger is mediocre, and 8xAA Amazon Basics (same thing as Eneloop) are $16. Add a few bucks for the two AAA's and a few bucks for the basic charger and spacers and you're at the same cost.

I would recommend just buying the batteries you need by themselves (either Amazon Basics or Eneloops) and a nicer charger like the BT-C3100, which does analyzing and also charges Li-Ion.

Just FYI. Amazonbasics white batteries appear based on testing and design to be second generation Sanyo Eneloops made in Japan.

The new Panasonic Eneloops are made in China and don't seem to be be made as well as the old ones.

These are as good as eneloops. I love my 15 minute chargers, this was the cheapest on amazon US, but I swear I got mie cheaper at wallmart or some store like that. Any charger that works with NiMH will charge them though. I use a lot of rechargables in my home so the 15 minute is great when I don't have enough extras around.

As a side note, I started using a cord on my laptop for the controller and it works well.

Edit: make sure the amazon basics batteries are made in Japan and not China.

Where are you buying batteries that don't come precharged? I've never heard of a LiMN battery like we use for vaping coming uncharged. Maybe it's only 60-70%, but that's more than enough for playing around.

Hell, even "normal" rechargeable batteries (Eneloops and quality generics) come precharged. It's not the 80s anymore.

For just about $6 more, you can get an 8-pack of rechargeable AA. If you are consuming single-use AA like this, please be sure to dispose of them properly.

Building on avrice's link, Eneloops. A slightly cheaper option now is AmazonBasics white batteries, which is believed to be rebranded Eneloop V2s.

I use Amazon Basics rechargeable AAs and they've been great.

I love these batteries and use them exclusively for my camera. They will usually last me 3/4 a trip on a set. I have had good luck with the Amazon branded ones as well. you can kinda-sorta recharge alkaline batteries a few times, but good quality NiMH ones are like $2 each. Why bother?

Its worth noting that amazon sells a NiMH AA based off of older enelope tech that still holds a charge for a long time but at half the price of enelopes.
