Let me help you out here. I bought 2 cables, of different lengths, from Amazon. A short one for my desk at work and an extra long one for home. Both are fully functional and work as the original cord does.
Amazon has them. Monoprice.com probably has them cheaper, but their search function was a pain to use.
Here is a replacement, I recommend trying to get your friend to pay for it

The S5 uses the USB 3 Micro connector, which looks like this. You can use a USB 2 cable with a USB 3 port (the right part of the USB 3 connector is identical to the whole USB 2 connector), but you can't use a USB 3 connector with a USB 2 port.
Looks like this is the right one.
Which one of these did you buy?
The S5 takes the Micro-USB 3.0 or most commonly called "USB 3.0" cable. The 3.0 is built on the 2.0 and you do get some data and some power but basically you are using the completely wrong cable to do the job.
USB 3.0 cables are CHEAP.
Confirm and make sure this is the same one as your cable. If the connections are the same then it should work no problem.

Also after thinking it seems that your cable may have pulled out something extra after you unplugged it from your laptop port. I would inspect your laptop port and make sure everything is still fine (could be a problem later when plugging in another usb device or cause short circuiting).
If you do get them from Amazon, get the Amazon Basics brand cable. The cable is thick and I have several of them and none have failed since I ordered the first one in April.
