Just spent the last couple weeks figuring this out with the help of this sub. Here's what I'd recommend at this point:

--> Not as slim or silky feeling as the Next Levels, but they're heavier and feel much better than what you'd expect from a $5 shirt.

--> Really soft, but noticeably thinner than the Gildan or Next Level. The white is see through. Longer cut.
$13 H&M washed-look (my favorite so far):

--> Fits really well, great length and colors.
I've also tried Pacsun brand basics, they aren't bad, just somewhat thin for the price. If you're looking for clamshell cuts for layering, you can check out Cotton On or Elwood.
