The FBI has verified Keyes's rental car passed through a tollbooth near Bloomington the night of Spires's disappearance. The author does not cite a specific source, I assume it came from one of her interviews of FBI agents.

One of the critisms of the Keyes theory is that Bloomington isn't really on the way between Chicago and Keyes's mom's house. This seems to prove that he was, in fact, near Bloomington that night. If it was Keyes he most likely took her to an abandoned country house somewhere between Bloomington and his mom's house.
