Thank you for your response.

The Optiphots seem a bit old. Do they really have optics that are considered good by today's standards? It would be nice to have an external/modular light source. It would also be nice to be able to easily use something as nice as my Canon DSLR, although I wouldn't mind using a reasonable webcam-esque camera such as this one.

The main thing that I'm hesitant about is buying a used scope that I don't know much about, which generally means that it cannot be returned. I can't afford to make mistakes when buying used. However, I doubt that I'll find anything satisfying for around $700 unless it is used.

As for alternatives, I've been looking around and for about $800 one can get a used Olympus CX31 which is infinite and seems to have PLAN as standard. For around $500 the finite CH30s are available, and for $300-350 CH2s are available. Do you have any experience with these scopes? The only Olympus that I've used is a BX51, which is a bit fancier than those...

I'm also needing light that isn't so intense that it eventually sterilizes things. I'll probably be taking photos at a high exposure time as it is.

I've had a hard time finding any reviews of the RevIII scope, so I don't doubt that you are right about the quality. They've probably just done a lot of SEO, but sell relabeled generic scopes.
