I'm really sorry you had to deal with a hit and run, and follow the asshole to get his plate number.
Please consider installing a dashcam. They've dropped in price substantially, and take no more than an hour to install.
Here's one from Anker that works well.
this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNSDRW8/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_v.LDDbNBC1TXGI like it well enough. If I bought a new one, I think I would get one that records both a front and rear view.
Mine unhooks from the windshield mount easily and I just put it away when I'm parked outside overnight. I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XNSDRW8/
I only have a front cam, but use a Roav by Anker and swear by it.
Got it for about $50, currently for $70, totally worth it.

That is a bummer. Hasn't happened to me, but I am too paranoid to rest easy on a street like that. Ever considered a dashcam? I'm pretty happy with mine. It automatically records if the van is bumped.

It’s a Roav c1.

I've had this Roav since June that I'm happy with. Its small enough that it fits right behind the rearview so its not blocking my vision. The cable is long enough to tuck behind the trim all the way down to the plug. Feature-wise I wasnt looking for a lot, its got parked mode and motion detection and good quality, even at night. The phone app is a little clunky but works, though its not really any faster than just plugging it into a laptop to copy videos off. It occasionally drops down to like $50, but I think its a good buy at $70
Whatever you choose, I definitely say go with that Roav style form-factor over the suction cup ones. My last one had a cup and it was the worst part.
Can confirm. Bought one a few years back for this very reason. You can connect to them wirelessly to download the video now, too. So, it's stupid easy to get HD quality video and have quick access to it in these kinds of events.
Here's the one I have: Anker Roav
Probably possible. Not sure if it would be worth it. A dash cam with motion detection and an additional battery might be enough to ease you worries. I had one installed and it makes me feel a little better.

The quality is amazing. It would be better if reddit didn’t compress the quality on here. It’s a very always reliable dash cam. Never lets me down. Records constantly. It’s never off. Even if my car is off. It’s Roav by Anker dash cam C1.

It really depends on your price point and where your values are. To me I am tired of maintaining budget dash cams, and I want something I don't have to worry about so much, or maintain (Formatting every 30-45 days/Firmware updates ect). I sort of want firmware updates, but I don't want to constantly check for firmware updates to fix bugs.
I have the Anker C1 dash cam. I can connect to it via WiFi on the app.

They're called dashcams. I have this one but the glue holding the touch screen pretty much melted off during the summer. It starts recording when it senses your car shaking. Still works, but uploading my videos to my phone is a total bitch to do. Wouldn't recommend this one. Try checking out /r/dashcam for some good recs.

Here you go. It has a screen, but is very discrete. The screen turns off after a preset amount of time.

Who am I supposed to be believe?!
I have a ROAV by Anker Dash Cam C1 it's pretty nice and is pretty cheap, I've seen them as low as $50 without the sd card
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XNSDRW8 Its not half bad, but the "parking" sensor is super sensitive even on the least sensitive setting. Half the time i close my door it thinks someone has bumped my car.
This one: Anker Roav Dash Cam C1, Dashboard Camera Recorder with Sony Exmor Sensor, 2.4" LCD, 1080P FHD, 4-Lane Wide-Angle View Lens, Built-In WiFi, G-Sensor, WDR, Loop Recording, Night Mode, 2-Port USB Charger https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNSDRW8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DyALzbZ8T0W9M
It uses one hell of a heavy-duty 3M adhesive pad that I've yet to hear that it melted or anything of the like. You can slide the cam out of the pad to connect it to a computer or bring it inside or something, but it sure is really durable since it'll be in an accident (I assume that's why it's difficult to come out).

I'm really digging it so far, but make sure to get a microSD card that's at least 32GB and labeled as "High Endurance" as most cards aren't built to handle constant reading and writing like those in dash cams. I got a SanDisk 32GGB "High Endurance Video Monitoring Card." Apparently, it's temperature proof, shock proof, and water proof. The important thing for me is really the "temperature proof" since the inside of the car gets REALLY hot in the summer in southern California. Plus, it's getting beat on by the sun for hours at a time while still recording and such.
Sure! It's this one.
We got it last June, according to Amazon, so there may be newer, fancier ones out there. But the video quality is really good, day or night. And the camera itself is unobtrusive.
How about the cheaper 1080p one for $60?
https://www.amazon.com/Recorder-Wide-Angle-G-Sensor-Recording-Upgraded/dp/B06XNSDRW8/ref=sr_1_3?m=A294P4X9EWVXLJ&s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1511813352&sr=1-3&refinements=p_6%3AA294P4X9EWVXLJ#Ask
Up to 128 GB micro sd card. Option to record on impact. Shows speed, records audio. Seems to have all the bells and whistles. It records 1080p, not 4k or 2k, but I would think that'd be good enough.
They have smaller ones now that tuck out of sight pretty well. Check out the Anker Roav, it goes on sale for $50 from time to time. No personal experience, but heard it's good and the form factor is nice.
I've been using this Anker dashcam for over a year, no problems yet. It's been through summer heat and winter cold without any issues. It goes on sale from time to time, lowest I've seen it go is $60.
Since 2016 - it was this one - out of production now but it's newer A119 versions are available. It's been parked in the Phoenix sun for about a year now and where I moved from before was quite toasty too.
I also use a Roav in my jeep
higher quality video but it has a battery - I do keep that car garaged and out of the sun.
This cam is on sale atm and a very good cam at that.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XNSDRW8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The trim tool it comes with is extremely handy
This is the one I'm using. They have two upgraded models now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNSDRW8/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_YgpSDb9CW0BA0
Is it this one?
Not sure if this meets all your needs but I just purchased the Anker dash cam. It was on sale. It has a battery and motion sensing. Also records audio. I think it has a mode where you can record in short bursts when it is unpowered, I'll have to double check.

You'll then have to buy a hardwire kit.
https://www.amazon.com/Spy-Tec-Hardwire-Fuse-Kit/dp/B01N686R48/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1502390244&sr=1-4&keywords=dash+cam+hardwire+kit
That kit is for ATM fuses. Here are other add a fuses for mini and APM sizes.

You'll have to plug it into a fuse that is HOT when the car turns on. Very easy installation. The hardest part is finding the correct fuse through trial and error. You can use a multi meter to help speed things along, but trial and error works too.
This one is a good deal, make sure you pair it with a 64gb memory card from Samsung.
My husband and I both have a Roav dash cam. It takes quality video during the day and at night. It also has a “parking sensor” and a “collision sensor” that automatically record and save video when someone walks up to the car in a parking lot or if it senses a hard jolt/collision. You can also save videos directly to your phone via the Roav app (WiFi required).
It is about $70 currently but it sometimes goes on sale on Amazon for $55. I have never had any issues with it so far and I bought it 2 years ago.
I will admit that I am posting this without thoroughly vetting the other comments, but the Roav C1 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNSDRW8?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf) is where it's at. You can see the features and review on the link, but as a St. Louis driver, I will vouch that you can't beat it for price vs. quality.
Yep, last year one went on sale for $99 that did that. It might be cheaper now
Amazon link $80 now
https://www.amazon.com/ROAV-Recorder-Wide-Angle-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B06XNSDRW8
supports 128GB cards.
Edit; ok it needs an app to transfer recordings, but should be doable by using an android VM if there is no desktop app.
I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/ROAV-Recorder-Wide-Angle-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B06XNSDRW8
Easy to install and hide the cable. I looked at some of the footage through the Roav app and I have to say the quality is pretty decent. I just started using it, so far so good. There are plenty of more expensive dashcams out there but I thought this was a good start.
I use this one, works great but I’d get a 1080 60fps if you can afford it
Roav it’s a little older but I still use it. Works well.
I have the roav unit. When I'm not it the car I remove it and put it in the glove box and lock. I have the pro version 2k res
But this is similar but 1080p ROAV by Anker Dash Cam C1, Car Recorder with Sony Sensor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNSDRW8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_79C.BbQYRH3F5
Mine actually has a battery, but some do come with a capacitor for better weather resistance (I believe).
I got mine cheap and it had good reviews, so I took a chance and bought 2. One for the wifey too. Both have worked flawlessly!
Here's what I'm using:

ROAVs are pretty nice too.

The mount fits basically any dash can so there may be better ones out there!
Oh no thats not the one I have. I have this one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XNSDRW8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Its made to operate in harsher temperatures like what we have during the summer. But if I were doing it again, I would go with the pro.

The Yi is the one that did not work for me. It was blurry and the picture wasnt clear enough to really read any license plates or anything.
https://www.amazon.com/YI-1080P60-Dashboard-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B01C89GCHU/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1523543545&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=dash+camera&psc=1
I have one that looks like this. I mounted it to my windscreen, drilling a single hole through the screen into the mounting plate for the dashcam. Wired it up with a 12v-to-1.5v adaptor spliced into my brakelight feed.
Works great, like an actual dashcam should, and I don't have to mess around with keeping a helmet cam charged and remembering to turn it on/off and all that.
I've got this and hardwired it into my car.
https://www.amazon.com/Recorder-Wide-Angle-G-Sensor-Recording-Upgraded/dp/B06XNSDRW8
I have also tested the C2 for about 2 months and it's been great and v reliable. These are def a step up from the shitty dashcams of 2012.
The Anker dashcam also has parking mode (wakes up when g sensor is triggered), but it takes like a solid 5 seconds to boot AFTER a collision. I don't know if the blackvue one boots up quickly to start recording
