I have an actual usb powered monitor. I was surprised that it worked. Video goes through the same usb connection too. The usb cord is split though I think so it can be powered via wall adapter if needed.

Edit: Here's the one I got, it's $90. I haven't used it extensively, just as an occasional second screen, but it works. The colors are a little washed out though.

For $84 you could just buy a 16" USB-powered monitor

u/justfordrunks · 6 pointsr/raspberry_pi

I'm ordering my pi today, and probably going to order this with it. AOC 16''

u/benjgvps · 5 pointsr/battlestations

Nice! Hopefully the tape doesn't get warm and lose the stickiness.

I wonder how well a USB-powered monitor like this: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005SEZR0G/ Would work connected to the internal USB header.

I found success (in work not school) with this portable USB monitor. No matter what computer you use, you can plug it in and have an orientation-switchable extra screen for your briefs, some PDF article, or solitaire whether youre in class or in the library.

1080p - $200 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236381

1366x768 - $90 - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005SEZR0G

Both very portable and don't lag. You could keep it in your computer bag for dual screens on the go.

I found one of these on Amazon. It look very cool. But it may not work with a RPI. If you look at the spec sheet (under Support) on the AOC website its say: Power Consumption 8 Watts ( Max. ). Since the RPi Model B is rated at max is 700mW - 1 watt I don't think the units can power this.

Ha! We've got a pretty laid back office, but I think climbing on my desk would definitely raise some eyebrows.

I love the miami set. I agree it looks pretty sweet on a white board. I originally planned to use it at home while my other order from Massdrop is on the way. I'm not too sure what I'll do when that one arrives. :D I agree, the white headphones go well with it.

The thing on the right is my french press. We've got a coffee machine in the office, what I call the java-tron, that produces pretty terrible coffee, in my estimation. Runs the water through the grounds too quickly at a temperature too low. I prefer to make my own at my desk and this is the simplest way to do it and it tastes amazing.

Regarding the AOC monitor, yes its the USB version and it's amazing. Best $90 I've spent, got it off amazon. I frequently work from home and being able to retain a multiple monitor arrangement is as simple as plugging that monitor into a USB port. You wont want to game on it, but it's perfect for Skype/email/youtube/etc. Think I did run into a driver issue when we upgraded to Windows 8.1 but resolved it by using an older version of DisplayLink, not sure about Windows 10 support though probably would be similar to 8.1 if I had to guess.

I see an ASUS USB monitor every once in a while on Woot. That might suit you. Lemme see if I can find it...

amaozon.. search USB monitors and you'll find a few, although limited, choices. Those are the only ones I know about, there's a little 7" that's straight USB and the other two llok like USB-C or USB-2.
This one looks promising

There are portable USB monitors (amazon) for < $100. This one is 16 inch and would fit in a backpack.

I've never used one of those though.

u/NeverPostsJustLurks · 2 pointsr/engineering

There are relatively cheap USB powered monitors. such as this

It has crappy resolution but its certainly adequate for a 2nd monitor.

I think smartphones will dominate as the driving force in HMDs. Build in accelerometer, UHD screens, usb 3.0 tethering to a host computer, camera for augmented reality, your phone is all the expensive bits of a vive or an Oculus.

Right now when I plug in my phone to my PC, I have several options for how to treat the connection. Charging only, MTP, tethered internet, PTP, even fucking midi.

I expect one day soon, we might get the option to treat the tether as a usb monitor.

They make smaller around 10" screens that connect via USB. They are relatively cheap and would get the job done. I dont know if this is against this subreddit's rules but heres one by AOC http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005SEZR0G/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000AYHY7I&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1R242TXV36FGD86WGVCK

I just googled for "portable second monitor" and found this
http://www.amazon.ca/AOC-E1649FWU-USB-Powered-Portable-Monitor/dp/B005SEZR0G
Looks pretty idea.

u/jamesholden · 1 pointr/buildapc

lilliput makes tons of small monitors - http://lilliputweb.net/

there are 15.6" usb screens for $60-90 like THIS

u/pewpewpewmoon · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

You know, I don't know yet.

I've heard it's possible to do so with something like a usb powered mini screen so I imagine its possible, but I doubt it will happen straight out of the box.

I've always treated the PI more like a supercharged microcontroller than a SoC.

Hello, Goodbye~.

This is a touchscreen monitor that I've been looking at getting for digital painting with a stylus. I'm a newbie to digital painting but it seems like a better choice than a graphics tablet since you wouldn't have to install anything and I could just work straight through photoshop. I don't need it, but it'd be nice to have. Thanks for doing this contest!

u/beartorus · 1 pointr/techsupport

here is a monitor You should need nothing but plugging it in via usb.

u/w2tpmf · 1 pointr/computers

One of my co-workers had one of these and it was fairly descent. I've also seen a really nice Asus one.

u/mcKempt · 1 pointr/pcgaming

You know, I hought the same but then I thought "Why not just get a USB LED monitor?".

Maybe it's better because it's an all-in-one piece? :/

u/eyeplucker · 1 pointr/battlestations

It's just a little portable monitor (15.6"), driven by USB. Screen quality is no where near HD quality but comes in handy for my laptop when I need screen real estate on the go - hardly ever use it for that purpose though...

Here's the link to the model: AOC E1649FWU 15.6"

Then why not buy a portable lcd monitor instead? They sell many at sizes larger than ipad screens and they are a lot lighter & cheaper than ipads. Like this one for example: http://www.amazon.com/AOC-E1649FWU-USB-Powered-Portable-Monitor/dp/B005SEZR0G/

There's more than 30 products in that category to choose from, so I'm sure you'd find one that suits your needs. It's odd to hope that a giant company like Apple would upgrade an existing product line to support this niche need.

u/qdog1342 · 1 pointr/pcmods

if you're using that power supply you're unfortunately going to have to go with a very low powered system

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Biostar-A68I-350-DELUXE-AMD-Fusion-E-350-AMD-A68-DDR3-Mini-ITX-Motherboard-MB-/160919120295?pt=Motherboards&hash=item257786e9a7

This is a small high end netbook processor built into a great tiny mini itx board

you'll only need about 2gigs of ram, throw an ssd in there and you'll have a zipply little machine that doesn't take up too much space.
a few other ideas, if you want, you could throw a 16 inch usb monitor in there as well without losing too much real estate.

That being said if you're not feeling the mobile cpu specs, you could go with an actual psu and build an actual computer in there, just remember when building a computer into a non pre build case, ventilation is everything!

Good luck with the build/planning man!
