Reverse osmosis filter. It won't be "distilled", it is a different process, but the result is the same: pure water.

It isn't quick, it will take at least 12 hours to fill your barrel, but it works well.

Okay so not all RO units include the DI part by default? So, this? It seems to be the add-on DI for that RO unit. The RO/DI is the biggest 'new' thing for me to research so I am still getting a feel for how it all works, thanks for pointing out this one didn't have the DI.
Yeah I agree I don't want to be using shady water for such a small tank. My betta is in a well-planted 5.5 that's doing very well with its nitrate levels and such but I know there are a lot more water chemistry elements in salt/a reef that could go wrong.

It works, but..... I'd get the BFS system if I had to do it again. Cheaper in the long run, easier to maintain. More high quality components.
I use this. It works very well, and it's at the very least a name brand. You can add in a DI can if you need to for not very much money, if you don't get 0 ppm. I get 0 ppm every time, and we have 400 ppm source water from the tap. If you want to test, this is only $20, and it's great. Best shit you can get, without regard to the price. For home use, it's awesome.
The 50 gallon version makes it fast enough.
I only got the tank about a month ago. Finally found the link to it. I haven't noticed any TDS creep so far. I use about 10 gallons a month for drinking water (kept in a jug in the refrigerator), 5 gallons a month for soda, and 20 gallons a month for brewing. I think that is enough usage so I don't get much TDS creep and I can drain it completely about once a month.
I do run the filtered water through a DI resin filter so the TDS is at or very near 0. If it creeps up a few points it won't be a problem for my needs.
I've read that you can daisy chain the tanks together so you could try a couple smaller tanks instead of going for one as big as I did.
Yeah it's pretty cheap and works well. With the resin cartridge which is optional, tds of my city water goes from 750 to 0.
