I believe there's a story in the beginning of The Arrow of the Blue Skinned God that's exactly that. A guy comes to a Sage with a question; the sage gets him to answer it himself; the guy comes back the next day but the sage is gone; a second guy comes in with a question and the first guy pretends to be a sage and gets the second guy to answer his own question.
EDIT to add: I suspect there's also an element of the fortune tellers cards in the marketplace in the city of the brass dragon. Cards were drawn, but I don't think meanings were more than vaguely assigned or possibly even intended by Matt; it was left up to the players to infer.
