I bought one of these coil winders off of Amazon. It's very easy to use.

I used to use drill bits, now I use this. It's basically just a steady winder. Makes it a lot easy to get a solid, even coil.

My build guide for a Protank

1. You need to find a rod that just fits inside the V of the protank head. (the 2nd smallest rod in this kit works perfectly link)
   
2. Wrap a coil around this rod. I use 32 gauge, 6/5 wrap and it gives me a 2.4ohm coil. Squish the coil to fit inside the head.
   
3. place coil and rod into the V of the protank. Make sure the rod is sitting on the flat surface of the protank head.
   
4. assemble the wire into the base of the head using the rod to hold the coil at a stable height inside the protank head.
   
5. check resistance and test fire
   
6. Thread 2MM ekowool or cotton inside the coil. (I normally use about an inch of wick or 2 inches of cotton when I am building then trim the ends)
   
7. fray ends of cotton or ekowool to fill the gap.
   
8. Put it together dry and verify no shorts.
   
9. Take apart and remove chimney from head
   
10. Put the head into your base and attach it to the device, wet the wick and test fire it making sure it is not shorting again.
    
11. reassemble, fill tank, vape on.

Here you go, first and only coil I've ever built. Will be building more when my black KFL+v2 arrives in the mail tomorrow. How shaky are your hands? Mine tremble constantly. I like to think it's slight, but it's noticeable enough that people pick up on it. There are a lot of things in my house that are all wobbly because I can't properly screw them back together after taking them apart. That said, I've seen enough posts from people who had "hand issues" of some sort, and were able to successfully rebuild protank heads that I feel okay taking a stab at it. I ordered some kanthal on eBay last night, and will let you know how it goes once it arrives.

I'm going to try a drill bit, but I've seen a lot of people recommend the the Artistic Wire Coiling Gizmo ( http://www.amazon.com/Artistic-Wire-Coiling-Deluxe-Jewelry/dp/B0068RQ85K/ ). Wrapping around something immobile may make it easier for you.

+1 for this, stopped using my other coiling jigs completely once i got it, not having to mess around changing rods all the time and such.

I have a coil gizmo that I bought from amazon and I taped the two smallest rods together, 1.83mm and 1.22mm. Then I just wrapped it as I normally would with the gizmo.

I still use my micro screwdrivers on-the-go, but I have two of these (one at work, one at home) and they make coil winding a quick, consistent event. Michael's has them for a few dollars more.

if you're going to be making micro contact coils may I suggest this. It's cheap enough to try and produces great results.coil winder

also I don't torch my wire ever. 28 & 30 gauge are pliable enough to where it's really not necessary. Just install your coil(s) and dry burn and you'll be set. Organic cotton works best for micro sizes just because it's easier to thread. The cotton yarn is good too but I find it more of a pain to thread but ymmv.

I do 30G, 9 wraps around the 2nd-to-smallest jig from this kit. Make both, fit them, check resistance, check for even heating (both glow together) and good to go. Should land around 1.1ohm total. (2.2 each)

I've got 32ga (almost 100' due to a mis-order) but its super fiddly to work with, I always end up mangling the coil either putting it in the atty or trying to wick it.

The jig is roughly 1.5mm IIRC but I haven't taken a solid measurement.

A coiling gizmo will do wonders for unsteady hands. You can pick one up on Amazon for cheap here.

It clamps to a table, and you thread one of the rods through the appropriately-sized hole, so then all you have to worry about is keeping tension on the wire. I like to do one wrap around a rod, then start cranking, instead of wrapping the wire around the hump-like thing on the rod itself. Less wasted wire. :)

With the coiling gizmo, you can turn the crank, pull the wire tight, turn the crank, pull the wire tight. You can also push the rod in towards the body after every turn, to get the coils close and even.

This sucker wraps coils perfectly every time for me.

This is a pretty nifty tool! Well if you don't want to wait for these to be in stock or spend ~$20, this winder should work just fine.

I use the middle rod from this set for most of my coils. ID is about 2.5mm I think, I measured it a while ago but forget exactly. Maybe 2.75.

Get all my wick and wire from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/meshcompany/ - good price. Just wanna check, but if you're colour blind, get a VP2 or VP4 - otherwise red/green lights and all that jazz. Other things possible...

Flush wire cutters, ceramic tweezers, precision screwdrivers, some sharp scissors purely for cutting cotton, and at least one waterproof battery case so you can throw in in your bag and forget about it.

Oh, and a sieve.

I use one of those coil jigs you see on amazon (for making spring jewelry) and it works really well for these longer coils. The one I'm wrapping around is the second to smallest rod, which is ~1.8mm. You wind up with a nice, very long micro coil that heats surprisingly evenly.

That, in my opinion, is the most fun part of a regulated device: being able to build relatively higher than you would for a mech, but still getting that wattage forced through the coils. It's definitely a heck of a lot of fun!

I have set aside my Kayfun and Russian for the last couple months so this is from memory, but here is what I liked: 10 or 12 wraps (?) of 28g kanthal in a contact microcoil placed on the diagonal between the posts due to the coil length. Coil was 1.2 ohms every time I built it even though I wanted higher. Do not go lower or you will scorch or melt your insulators. I used the second smallest rod in this coil gizmo.

I liked the 28g because it was so sturdy. Remove wick, dry-burn and rewick twice a week and the coil was good to go for a month or more, depending on the juice.

One last thing... make sure your Vamo is in RMS mode if your version has a choice. Mean mode is just that... mean and harsh.

I purchased one of these the other day, specifically to try out these prettier coils. I'll let you know if it works with this type of setup.
