I'll agree with others...Robin Hobb's Assassin's Fate.

Worth the Candle got too depressing for me to get through. Most recently, the doomed romance plot in The Salamanders was kinda heartbreaking for me...even though objectively it isn't a tragedy and the story isn't over. It's interesting how a low stakes story where the author takes the time to make the characters feel real has more impact then authors who blow up planets willy-nilly or fall all over themselves to be Darker and Grittier
