For the Monitor, the ASUS PB278Q is my sRGB compliant monitor that works fantastically. If you want to bump up to Adobe RGB compliance the PA279Q is the way to go, but quite difficult to find from a good seller.
In regards to the desktop unit, the Intel i7-6XXXk series is the tried and true CPU to go with, with the 6850k being in the good sweet spot for a value proposition.
Minimum 32gb RAM for video editing from my personal experience, preferable 64gb for Premiere and Photoshop running simultaneously.
Most prefabs have already switched their GPUs over to 1080 ti for their high-end stuff with out dropping stupid cash for the quadro P5000/P6000. The increases seen by the quadro series over the 1080 ti seem to be minimal anyways.
The final big money-sink is storage. I would recommend a 1tb SSD, either the samsung 850 PRO for your standard SATA connection or the new 960 PRO for a PCI-E M.2 slot which is significantly faster. For your bulk storage, I recommend the Western Digital 4TB Black drives, either one on its own or two in RAID 0 for a total of 8TB storage or RAID 1 for redundancy to ensure no data loss when one drive fails.

Er... You can easily get a 27" 2560x1440 resolution ASUS for ~$550, A Dell for $589.00, and lower end brands like Monoprice/Catsleap/Xstar, etc. for even less $300-400--- that's only after 2 minutes of searching on Amazon, I could get even better deals if I really scoured the net.
And let's not forget the iMac is an All-in-one so if one component needs warranty or service work, your entire system is out of comission.
$3000 computer for a videographer... only spends $180 on a 21" monitor? ಠ_ಠ No. No. Nope.
SLI is pretty much useless for video editing (very hit & miss depending on the software) and only adds unnecessary heat and cost to the rig. Drop one of those 780s and focus that money on a quality 24-27" IPS screen and hardware color calibration! (stay the hell away from those budget 4k TN screens)
Edit: Also, if OP is used to their MBP keyboard, I'd recommend picking up a wired Apple keyboard. Personally, I find them much less fatiguing on my fingers. It makes for a seamless transition (if you're still using the MPB) and goes a long way to make your Hackintosh feel more native.
Edit 2: After some very surface level searching, here are some much better monitors the OP should put their money towards: HP 24" z24x P-IPS ,Dell 27" U2713HM P-IPS and Asus 27" PB278Q P-IPS. If it can't come close to 100% sRGB, it's shit. Oh and the monitor color calibrator.

If you prefer not to take chances on dead pixels or warranty issues from Korean panels, the Asus PB278Q (27 inch) and BenQ BL3200PT (32 inch) are both wonderful choices. I can personally recommend them both, unless you want high refresh rates or low response times. The Asus will OC to about 85Hz and BenQ to 75Hz. Don't buy these for OC.

Here's the review of the case I released a couple of days ago
I got a PB278Q this year (also unsure how to tell the difference between new and old models, I have one and like it alot. I don't know if my eyes can detect PWM, but I usually see its quite well reviewed. It's also usually at least $100 cheaper than the Dell models and can sometimes be had for as cheap as $400.
Edit: I have done some research, and if this article is to be believed, the new models have a Black bezel, whereas the old ones have gray. Mine has a black bezel and I haven't noticed any PWM. This is the exact model I purchased.
Is the Thunderbolt Display a good display? Yes. Is the Thunderbolt Display worth the $1000 price tag? No. There are displays with the same specs that are less costly. For example, this.
That being said, Apple will also likely release an updated Thunderbolt Display that has the same 5K panel as the riMac when Thunderbolt 3.0 is released as part of the Skylake generation of processors (maybe this summer).
This is mainly aimed at photo editing so it's designed for color accuracy first and foremost. It has a response time of 12ms (color to color) and 5ms GtG.
For gaming there are cheaper / better options or some around the same price for new items.

It's certainly powerful enough, but as a fellow web designer I don't think any of Apple's portables have enough screen space to comfortably design / develop. Get a 13" MBP, then buy the nicest monitor you can afford -- I don't know your budget, but I'd suggest a 1440p 27" screen like this one.
Right now this 27" 1440p monitor is on sale on amazon for $470. That's $240 off it's retail price. I just bought one. I doubt very seriously that there's a better deal than that one.

You sure you're not willing to consider 1440p? Because at your budget ($372 usd) 27" 1440p 144hz monitors can be had all day long. If not, I listed some 1080p monitors below as well.
Since you have an Nvidia card, My first choice for you would be the Dell Gsync S2716DGR, which goes on sale for less than $400 all the time. It's pretty much the only Gsync 27" for under $400 consistently. Keep an eye on /r/buildapcsales for the best deals.
After using 2 freesync and 2 gsync monitors, I can't go back. The elimination of stutter/tearing is completely worth it IMO. Framerate dips and spikes are smoothed over as well, making for a very consistant experience.

And for your question about ips for gaming, there is nothing wrong with ips. TN panels generally have a faster response time, but it's not buy much. And the shit picture quality of TN panels makes it not even close to being worth it. Ips is 10/10 the way to go.

Replaced the 4770k with the 3820 and a gigabyte up4. They're better for sli set ups, especially with your budget.The 840 pro is a better option for an ssd than the 830. I took out the network adapter, because it shouldn't be needed. The 32 gb of ram is pointless, and dominator platinum is way overpriced, 16 gigs should work fine. A 850 watt power supply will work fine with your setup. The asus blu-ray reader is cheaper, but you should also consider a regular $17 dvd reader, as it will do everything perfectly, unless you want to watch blu-rays on your computer.
With the sound card and speakers, I'm fairly certain you don't need $400 speakers, unless you are an audiophile, but you can add them back if you do want them. Without the speakers though, you shouldn't need the sound card, as the mobo's sound should be fine. If you want to get a good headset or speakers, you can add the sound card back in, or go for one of asus's xonar sound cards.
Instead of 2 144hz monitors, I gave you 3 60hz monitors for if you want to go with a multi-monitor set up. I would highly recommend going with this 1440p monitor instead, but either monitor set up should work.
I wasn't sure about the mouse, but the logitech G500 is supposed to be a very good mouse, but I recommend you do a bit of research to find out what you want. The Ducky shine 2 is a very good mech keyboard at the same price as the k95. I do recommend checking out /r/mechanicalkeyboards to do some research on some good mech keyboards, and to decide what kind of switch you want for it.
I would recommend the Asus PB278Q. I have a few of them and they work wonderfully. It has HDMI 1.4 and works beautifully at 2560x1440.

I assume you're talking about the Asus 28" 4K Monitor which costs $749.00 at Memory Express, and comes with a standard 1 year warranty.
You can get a Dell 28" 4K monitor for roughly $370 on eBay. Seller refurbished, 90-day warranty. The downside to this particularly model is it's 30 hz, compared to yours at 60 hz. But unless you're selling it on Kijiji towards the demographic who would want 60hz (gamers for instance) the average Joe wont care. The seller of this particular item will receive approximately $255 after fees and shipping to GSP.
You can get a Acer 28" 4K monitor that is 60hz for roughly $624. After fees and shipping to GSP, the seller makes away with around $450.
The benefit of eBay is the buyer protection. I believe you have 180 days now, that you can claim an item not as described, and get your money back. So buyers are willing to pay that premium. There's no protection when buying on kijiji (and not fees to pay as a seller).
You can get an Asus 27" 4K monitor NEW from Amazon for $551.43, shipped. The seller would make approximately $409.
Found your ad. It's no surprise you aren't selling it. First thing, your ad is off-putting. Even if I wanted your product, I'm not going to deal with you because if something goes wrong, you'll put my name and email online, to shame me. Not very professional.
Next, you don't even tell us the size of the screen. That's a pretty big detail to leave out when you're selling a monitor. How long is the transferable warranty? You use a stock picture, but give no pictures of the actual monitor. You can add, I believe, up to 12 pictures on Kijiji. I'd take advantage of that. Show the screen with a video game playing, showing it with no dead pixels. Show any ports it has on the back. Show that the screen is clean and has no scratches. This is a 60 hz monitor, one if it's best features. Sell it! Put in the max screen resolution. Hell, just go through the Memory Express link, and copy/paste some of its highlights.
You could also try linking to eBay/Amazon (link to Amazon.ca because the monitors are much more expensive there). I've seen used ones go for $570 and up including shipping, on eBay.
Last suggestion I'd give you is to lower your price (or at least keep it at $550, and be open to offers). Nobody is making $550 off these monitors, used. And the value will likely only decline during spring breakup, when the kids from the oilfields start selling off their possessions to make ends meet. I don't know what magical number is right for you, but I'd consider lower offers. The great thing about kijiji is you can haggle. And just because someone sends you a low offer doesn't mean they wont pay a fair price. Dealing with low-ballers negatively wont get you any further in life.

Recently replaced my 3rd monitor as well, here's some friendly insight that may save you some money.
Unless you're purchasing a 34 inch monster 4k may actually be overkill. I almost went 4k for my second monitor but opted for this 27 inch WQHD 2k instead. The monitor sits 3 feet away and I still have to concentrate to read text occasionally - here's a quick comparison of my 27 inch 1080p vs 27 inch 2k.
Basically, if you're dead set on 4k make sure you're also prepared to spend some major cash on a monitor large enough to make it worth it. I'm extremely picky about my build, it's how I make my living, but it turns out I would've been very unhappy with 4k at the size (27 inch) I was purchasing.
RAM speed is negligible, at best, in terms of performance. I'd suggest getting a 512 or 1TB SSD, personally. The cost difference is worth it to ensure you have plenty of room for any future needs. The motherboard you have should be fine, I think.
Cooler-wise, is this going to be in your bedroom? If so, even watercoolers aren't necessarily going to be silent under a full load. The key to quieter fans is larger fans moving more slowly. Water coolers may allow that, but I doubt they're going to be silent under a major load.
Moving above a 1080 monitor should be a priority. That's what'll allow you to fit more on the screen, rather than simply have it be bigger. I don't know about a 4K screen, but a 1920x1200 model would probably do nicely in a 24" size. IPS is well worth is for good color reproduction, as I understand it. I have a professional photographer client who uses 3 of these Asus monitors and swears by them. They're pricey, but have excellent color fidelity, apparently. (I wouldn't know, having difficulty distinguishing many different hues.)

Note that RAM isn't that important in a pure gaming/3D work build, unless you're a really insane multitasker (16GB RAM here - 40 programs running, 2 of them games, plus 200 chrome tabs will take up ~7.5GB RAM. Yes, I really get lazy with lots of stuff open), but feel free to add if it fits your budget.
I would go with a 1x8GB stick instead of 2x4GB in the above build, because it would have a better upgrade path.
The monitor is expensive mainly because it's a 4K monitor, therefore offering really crisp images - I'm not sure if you need this, but the Macbook has a high-res screen, too. You could go to a store that sells 4K TVs to check how the image quality looks like, and compare them to Full HD TVs - note that the crispness can be even better in a monitor, because of their smaller screen sizes.
For some reasor, /u/AHomelessManOnMeth's monitor has some bad reviews. I would suggest you to take a look at the ASUS PB278Q and the ASUS MX279H. I'm not quite the best person to suggest a monitor, but hopefully someone else could advice you better.
 
Also, what do you expect of your build? You definitely have money to choose.

A great 1440p is the Asus PB278Q. The difference is greater than you would think. The higher pixel density makes for an astounding experience.
I am running an ASUS PB278Q with my R9 290X and absolutely find it gorgeous. I tested both 144 hz and 1440p screens as well as triple 1080's and the 1440p at 60 fps is great.
Games are great at the increased detail, but I find I have so much more space for browser windows, word documents, file browsing etc. 144 hz isn't going to help in anything but video games.
A 970 should handle those games at 1440. If you don't want a Korean monitor, I would go for this, or this
If you are looking for a good 27'' 1440 monitor, Asus makes a really nice one.
Apple Cinema displays are nice too, but pricey.
Stay away from the cheap Korean ones if money is not an issue.
seeing as the BenQ is out of stock, and you're willing to spend $500 on a monitor, I would get neither and actually grab something like this. Big AND high resolution.
If I were you I would definitely look into getting a 2560x1440 monitor, it will be fantastic for any sort of editing and will provide a stellar gaming experience too. Unfortunately most of the affordable displays have to be imported from Korea via eBay, here are some links: Qnix, Achieva Shimian, Yamakasi Catleap. There is another alternative if you're absolutely sure you want a 1440p monitor and you don't want to take the risk with a Korean display. Monoprice sells a 2560x1440 IPS display for under $400. Dell and ASUS also have a really nice 1440p monitor, they just tend to be more expensive.
I think if I were you I would take a serious look at the Shimian Achieva, while it's a smidge more expensive then the Qnix, it has a glossy finish which aids the vibrancy of the colours it's displaying and would be the best pick for photoshop and other editing programs. Take in mind that without a matte finish it can succumb to screen glare but if you're willing to tweak the lighting in your room, it'll look fantastic.
Then you can afford a second Korean 1440p monitor into your budget if you want to or if you'd like to save some money then you could just look into a cheap 1920x1080 screen for a secondary monitor if you'll only be using one monitor for the important stuff (editing and gaming). But if you want my honest opinion, the ultimate setup for your needs and your budget would include this BenQ display. It is simply one of the best gaming monitors ever made-- it has a sweet 144Hz refresh rate, unbelievable build quality and can be put into portrait mode incredibly easily. On the negative side it is not an IPS screen and is not 1440p but if you play any sort of competitive game (SC2, LoL/DotA, Counterstrike) you will see the buttery smoothness that this monitor offers. If you combine that with a 1440p screen, that is a delightful combination.
I am looking for a primary monitor that is 1440p 144Hz, 27", and a secondary monitor that is 27" and 1440p, but 60 Hz instead (I want to be able to move things back and forth across the monitors without them changing size, essentially, but don't need as good of a monitor for the second screen). I was also hoping they would look somewhat similar, so my setup doesn't seem mismatched.

Really doesn't look like a cinema display, but I've got one and it's fantastic: Asus PB278q. It's a good price, 1440p, has DP, DVI, HDMI, and VGA inputs... And really, you're looking at the screen itself more often than not when you're using it.
But to each their own.

Getting 3*4k would take too much of his budget (80-100%) unless he wanted to buy 30 Hz 4k TVs instead of monitors.
More realistic would be to get 1 4k monitor (25-40%) or 3 1440p (10-20%, cheap option free shipping to Norway, 3-5 defective pixels, expensive option), 1600p monitors (20-35%, 30" or 27").
If he wants to play FPS he also has the option of however many 1080p 144Hz monitors he wants.

If it makes you feel better, I'm a projectionist and my grandmother owns this exact monitor. So I have had the option to see it in person. I do have to say it looks fantastic. Though I am a projectionist, I don't edit photo's where I need perfect colors. As a projectionist, we just have to get the colors almost perfect. So I have never had the chance to see a several thousand dollar monitor with perfect colors to compare this too. For me though, I feel this monitor looks absolutely stunning.

BenQ PG2401PT - a bit over your budget bracket, but I think I would go for it personally if I could afford it. Reason for it being the 10bit panel (my new favorite). However, as with everything it has its drawbacks and for that monitor it's the size, only 24inches.

ASUS PB278Q 27-Inch - Almost 600 reviews and still sitting at 4.5/5 stars. Pretty lucky for you as the price on amazon.co.uk and amazon.com is almost the same, but the UK one is priced as £ (£465) instead of $($469). People who own it state its a good multi-purpose monitor. So even though it is a PLS monitor it should be fine.

Samsung 28-Inch 4K LED Monitor (U28D590D) - pretty decent looking monitor, but has mixed reviews so could be a gamble.
That's roughly it for now. Here's a pretty nice IPS monitor list with USD prices and some helpful notes. I got a few more monitors noted down, but they are gaming monitors with 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, G-sync etc.
I think it's worth checking out NEC monitors, which seem to be mega expensive, but offer amazing specs. As to Korean brands, I haven't looked around, have you found any good looking ones with decent specs?
As it stands the BenQ BL2710PT or Asus PB278Q are best choice for you, both 27 inch and 1440p. Also, since you aren't gaming then maybe have a look at 4K monitors? Obviously 4K requires a bit more powerful pc.
I suggest giving the Asus PB278q a look. It is a PLS 1440p panel with solid color reproduction and response rate good enough for gaming. And, its about $350 on Amazon, sold and fulfilled by Amazon. I bought it at almost $500 and would get a second one without a doubt if I was not looking for a nice 4k monitor for editing.
I forgot to ask budget. I have an Asus pb278q that is 1440p and 27", if you want more of a name-brand. If budget is a concern, you may want to look at the amazon warehouse deals. They had some like-new quality with no damage to them for $350 USD. If you want brand new, korean monitors are the way to go. IF you are worried about dead pixels, you can look for Perfect Pixel editions of QNIX and even Crossover. If you are still shy of korean monitors, you may have to go with 1080p with your preferred size for budget reasons.

The Asus PB278Q 27" monitor looks like it'd be similar to the Dell (or Apple Thunderbolt Display).
Really any display would work but I personally prefer displays with resolution that is at least 2560x1440 and IPS. Mainly just get the highest pixel density you can afford. There might be some popular and cheaper Korean equivalents out there as well.

I hope this gives you a good place to start. When you are doing your research you should look for 1440p + monitors (possibly 4k) that are IPS panels with any refresh rate (60hz will be just fine). I am no professional just an avarage consumer that just bought a monitor so please please take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

For Lightroom yeah I plan to keep the library and the smart previews on the internal SSD for the most speed. The externals drives just hold the RAW files currently. I usually edit the smart previews on my laptop SSD when traveling and then sync back later once I'm home and need to send out the final photos.
I dont understand a need for 1440p for netflix/youtube as there is very little content at this resolution. you really aren't going to find many 1440p monitors under 600 unless you look into the korean ones like the crossover or catleap. These korean monitors can be 300-400 dollars, but there are some catches:
Personally, I would reccomend the Asus PB278Q. It usually goes for 650 but apparently amazon has recently dropped it's price down to 550ish. It also has amazing reviews from pretty much everyone on the web, you may want to youtube some reviews or read more about it. But it has a pletora of ports including displayport, and might be the best bang for your buck.

Obviously there are more options, but all of those have the 144Hz, some are 1440p, while others are not.
If you wanted an IPS one:
The TN Panels still have fantastic pictures so, it's not a bad choice and would be good for gaming. If you can save up another $400, you can go with the Asus ROG 27" 1440p 144Hz IPS. Just got this about a week or so ago and it is just fantastic. 100% worth the extra money.
What's your budget? That's really what it comes down to.
If you can spend the money, I would suggest going 1440p. Your 1070 will handle that well.
Then you can decide if you want to go 1440p @ 144hz or if you need to settle for a 1440p @ 60hz. You'll find that 1440p's @ 144hz will run you $500+.
In a perfect world, you would get 1440p @ 144hz w/ G-Sync. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a 1440p @ 60hz w/ G-sync, as the g-sync monitors I've seen are offered in the high price monitors that are typically 144hz....

I bought them used but search for Very Good condition to ensure there was no damage of any kind to the monitors. The two that I received had clearly never been turned on as they still had all of their stickers on the screen and so forth.
The reason I decided on these monitors was because they were 1440p, could transition to horizontal, were IPS (for very wide angles which I needed) and fit into my price used. The quality of the monitor stand really stood out to me as being the key to these monitors fitting my setup. I could make them perfectly parallel to my primary monitor and they are rock solid. I highly recommend them.

What's more important to you -- 144hz or color accuracy? I would personally go with an IPS or PLS screen (I own the 27-inch PLS ASUS PB278Q @ 1440p/60hz) for my photography and photo editing/video editing needs.
I decided not to bother with 144hz because I don't play FPS games that much and honestly I find the price to performance ratio not that great for the wallet.
That said, you can go with something like the the 24-inch 144hz BenQ XL2420Z for gaming and run an IPS monitor like the 23-inch IPS [ASUS PA238Q] or the 24-inch IPS [ASUS VS248H-P] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HIRG52/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005HIRG52&linkCode=as2&tag=red90-20&linkId=HHTQ3XDDRA7KHILJ).

You're going to need an SLI setup for those two though so choose wisely!
I'm not writing them off, but I don't want to struggle to fill the pixels. This looks good. I do like that the two I listed have USB ports, but I'm not so sure that I need 12 USB 3.0 ports on my monitors, or if they'd even work. I do have a lot of USB peripherals, though...
Anyway, I'm definitely open to bigger monitors, and would prefer it if price were no object, but I'm worried that I'd need to really power-up the rest of the build to game at such high resolution. Unless the two 970s can do it at 60fps.

I have it connected by DVI to my Sapphire Radeon 290 Tri-x card. I distinctly remember having the sound play through the speakers at one point and it no longer works. Currently the sound devices display as not connected. Any idea what the issue could be? I believe I have updated the drivers to their latest versions.

27" Monitor I sit about four feet away from it.
I chose it because it is a better cable for his display as it has higher bandwidth capacity to ensure there are no problems driving the screen which is WQHD it's This if you're curious plus displayport is locking so absoutly no chance of it sliding out(you know if you actually get it in though). The thing with my dad is that he actually knows enough to get by but not enough that he doesn't need help so introducing him to displayport was more or less trivial

For example, these are two of the other monitors I am looking at. At first I will only have one 1440p along with my 1080 monitors, but eventually I would like to add another. The fact that the Korean monitors need to use dual link DVI if you plan on gaming worries me as I can only connect 1 to my GTX 970 ( I suppose I could use a HDMI-Dual link DVI cable or connector).
No problem. I really don't know what monitor, but I HIGHLYYY suggest and almost as this point require you to get an IPS display lol...its BEAUTIFUL. There are some high end gaming ones(qniq or something) which are 1440p, IPS, 27", 120hz refresh rate gaming monitors. I think you can only buy them online though, never used or seen one.

I really like the one on that amazon page although I wish I had gone 27"(mainly because I have the space for it). I prefer matte finish over gloss, 2-5ms reponse time is the best you can get, and 60hz refresh is the standard(gaming monitors go to 120, but I dont think we have any besides the qniq that are IPS as well).
I7's are fine for multithreaded stuff(photoshop, video processing, animation, etc) and while some games may take advantage, it depends on what games you play. Most of the games right now utilize the GPU more so than the cpu(may change in a few years, nobody knows; i heard witcher 3 recommends an i7). If you WANT to spend the money, an i7 is fine to get. It might come in handy later, it might not which is why I didn't add it. It's not a bad idea, it's just that you may never utilize it fully. The i7 is on sale at microcenter right now so you'd be adding about 80$ to your build which at this point would probably be worth it(normally it's $339). I have a feeling you really want to spend the money and get something that will last so in that case getting 2x8gb of RAM would be worth it as well.

Well a great one would be this one. It may be a bit out out of your price range, but it has higher contrast, improved viewing angles, a faster response time, exhibits less reflectiveness, and produces a clearer and crisper image than most other IPS or TN panels.

The ones i buy for work aren't cheap but are amazing for the price. For what you're doing I'm sure that works fine, if you want to upgrade at some point something like this acer is probably fine, just keep an eye out for deals on IPS monitors and find a resolution / screen size you like.

Not a monitor expert but i can give some general advice. For 1440p 27" is generally considered the sweet spot. If you really want to cheap out you can find Korean monitors on sale for ~$200. Otherwise you can usually find nicer ones on sale for $300-400. Something like this would probably do you well. I would just say look for the trusted brands like Asus, Dell, Aoc, etc, and make sure to post here before you buy one. I don't game at 1440p so I'm not really the best one to ask, but there are plenty of people on this subreddit who could tell you a lot more.

It's IPS / AHVA, 144Hz, and 1440p. No FreeSync/G-Sync, but tbh that's not absolutely necessary, particularly with a 144Hz refresh rate. V-sync tearing is far less noticeable on high refresh rate displays.
Macbook pro owner here. I have an Asus monitor and I have used an [old dell] (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&sku=320-4237&validate=false&~lt=popup). I'm pretty sure all external displays allow you to close your macbook if you plug it in to the wall at the same time. Also that dell has a built in USB hub. I'll concede to the apple monitor - it does have firewire (I have once wished I had some way to attach firewire to my pc), ethernet (modern macbooks don't have an ethernet port so they can be skinnier), and you can daisy chain thunderbolt displays. Even with that additional functionality, the apple monitor is a bit pricey.

You're going to want to shop around and go through your other options. I love mine, but it won't go above 60hz, but that's all I need from my gaming computer.
That display is much worse than the one with the iMac, it needs to be a 1440p IPS to be comparable. Edit: something like a dell u2713H would be a similar display.

Or, another of the monitor I currently have. My dilemma is between lower-resolution, high-refresh rate vs high-resolution, lower-refresh rate. My friends' rave about 144Hz (especially for gaming), but I've gotten so used to the 1440p resolution, and game only about 1-2 hours a day on average.
One monitor will likely be oriented landscape (for gaming, movies), and the other will stay in portrait most of the time (webpages, documents).

The other thing to think about is if you're not going to get 144fps on 144hz or 60fps on a 60hz monitor. You should probably think about what GPU you should be rocking. Since its the biggest $$$ in your build usually. You want to avoid any bottle necks and not over pay for what you're not going to end up using.

I'll either be using a 2 or 3 monitor setup. From what I'm finding out, the 278Q (1440p) monitor will work well in either, the 287Q (4K) will look awesome for some stuff, but frame rates in some games will be bad unless I SLI.

Hm, it's weird but I can't find the PB278Q 1440p. At least here in Germany, they don't seem to be available (anymore).
All I found was the same model number but with 4K - Amazon DE.

I wasn't really considering ultrawides. No particular reason, I just feel like dual monitors is nicer for development.
If you're happy with 60Hz, you can get 2 x 1440p 16:9 for the roughly the same price as a 1440p 21:9.
Alright, do yourself a huge favor. At least a 1920x1080 (though I highly suggest 27" 2560x1440) monitor. Most games are made for widescreen, really. Do IPS, and "flicker-free." Most ASUS monitors are. The IPS monitors have better viewing angles, which really helped my neck out. Prior to that I would intensely sit in one position for "optimum viewing angle." Now I can lounge around pretty much however I want and have no weird color shifting on my screen. It also looks worlds better.

EDIT: To clarify, the flicker I references is when a monitor uses PWM dimming, which actually flickers the backlight on and off rapidly to make it appear dimmer. Some people aren't bothered by it, but those that are get bad headaches and/or eye strain. So getting one that mentions being flicker-free is a bit safer of a bet in terms of eye strain.

Dual Monitor Help
I just bought the Acer Predator 144hz and I am running dual monitors along with a ASUS PB278Q 60hz.
My problem is I can't seem to find out how to make my Predator go to 144hz. I right clicked on the desktop to go to display settings but it is only giving me the options of 59 & 60. I also made sure I was selecting the Predator.
The Predator is hooked up with HDMI and the ASUS is through display port. I have a GIGABYTE 980ti with only 1 HDMI.
Also any other newcomer tips for setting up dual monitors? Thank you!
Korean monitors are a bit of a gamble. It depends on if you want to risk the higher chance of a Korean monitor having dead pixels and backlight bleed, among other things.
Here's (what I think) is probably the best 1440p monitor in your price range. The only real downside is its response is somewhat high considering it's a $460 monitor. That shouldn't be a problem though unless you're playing professional level Counter-Strike or something.

I went from a 60hz 24" IPS to 144hz 24" TN and the smoothness was wonderful. I recently went to 28" 4k 60hz gsync down to 27" 1080p 144hz gsync, then finally settled on 27" 1440p 144hz gsync. After having 144hz I couldn't live without it, 1080p on a 27" was too big of pixels. 27"s of 1440p 144hz and gsync goodness is a great thing, albeit a bit pricey and hard to get.

based on the price, it would seem that the 5ms monitor is better?
That's what i was thinking, but i was wondering if people had experience with multiple monitors and resolutions. Also if anyone knows a good monitor other than this one or if it's worth waiting for it to go back on sale when it's in stock.

I'm on a budget below $400, so keep that in mind. I'm leaning toward the asus, and the benq. Less so the Dell, and the reason being that there are many reports of blacks showing up poorly due to backlight bleed I believe. However, other than that it's apparently pretty good.
The two others are cheaper and don't seem to have any outstanding problems like the dell has, but I'm still unsure of the color reproduction. Here are the reviews for all 3 so you can read up a bit on them yourself (also let me know what you get when you do, and how you like the monitor you chose :).)

If you read the reviews, the stands are pretty poor. Performance wise they will beat out name brands because they are overclockable. I have mine set to 120Hz. Which if you went name brand, you will be stuck at 60hz, unless you want to dish out 800 bucks. But, if you want name brand go with the ASUS PB287Q For standard brands, anything cheaper than that isn't going to be reliable, and this one is one of the best for the you can get for the price.

Could you explain overclocking a little bit? Would the Asus linked above be able to overclock to 120Hz? Is it safe to do so? How do you do it?
If you are going for quality, then you'll want a non-TN display. The Asus PB278Q is a great 1440p monitor.

It's amazing and totally worth a bit more money. And a 980Ti will drive such a display quite well, especially since most come with Gsync.
$500ish? You won't be able to get 120/144Hz at 1440p with an IPS display for cheap.
You can get this ASUS monitor for around $400. 27", IPS, 60Hz, 2560x1440. You can get Dell's 25" offering for a similar price. Dell's 27 inch offering is a little over $500, if I remember correctly.
ASUS offers this MG279Q for a little over $600 when all is said and done. This might be your best bet. Acer offers this one, with GSync instead of the previous monitor's FreeSync for $700.
Edit: All of these monitors are IPS. If you want to go TN, I bet the choices will bloom and the prices will lower.

We have one here, it is rather nice, and should work fine with any GPU powerful enough to drive it, and which has HDMI, DisplayPort, or Dual-link DVI, so no worries there (modern mid- and high-end cards will often have all three). It does not, as you say, have any of the syncing tech though, because while Freesync (AMD) and Gsync (Nvidia) were already out, that would have raised the cost of the monitor, although I think more expensive models of the same thing are made with those. Adaptive Sync is newer (does basically the same thing), and will hopefully be widespread since it's being made part of the VESA standard for DisplayPorts. It should also be hardware agnostic, so as long as Nvidia plays nice and supports it, then all the major cards will.
1440p if you play games like witcher or other rpg/mmorpg type games.
144hz if you're playing counter strike super competitively...

I've been dealing with this lately and my default line for non essential upgrades is, "When your manager gets approval for the funds, they can tell my manager and then it'll get purchased." Works nicely because we don't have an IT budget so it has to come from whatever dept. Unfortunately I've had to have hard talks with management of various teams (designers) to the effect that their employees are not allowed to ask for any hardware directly and to quit harassing me on a weekly basis.
In regards to Thunderbolt displays we've had good luck with our test case Asus, but you have to use a mini display port to display port cable to get full resolution.

they aren't worst. they are vastly better (in their own way). tn panel provides fast reponse time, and faster refresh rate. And these days, the color produced isn't terrible. You'll have to be a graphics artist or a web designer to even notice. (or have a serious OCD about your colors i guess)
As for being smaller, well if you absolutely have to have 27in with an IPS panel... There are better options

I never said anything about 4K tvs. I don't own a 4K anything. It's not like 4K is the only thing you are allowed to upscale to. The 4 displays in question, I didn't use them all simultaneously, this was just over the course of a few years. These were my 4 most recent displays I have used for my PC over the years. The first was a 1080p TN monitor, the next was a 1080p television, then a 1440p PLS monitor, then the one I have now, another 1440p PLS monitor.
I'm just amazed that you are literally telling me that I didn't see with my own eyes what I did see as recently as just two fucking days ago when I switched ArmA 3 to 720p (which should scale perfectly to 1440p) because I was having a hard time getting above 30fps in multiplayer. When I switched to 720p the colours were indeed less fucking vibrant, it was more like I was streaming the game rather than running it on my local machine, that's what it looked like. Are you going to now tell me that that definitely didn't happen? Because it did.
I'm not saying this to try to "win" the argument, I wish it fucking didn't happen because I would find upscaling from a lower resolution to be very helpful for when I am playing a game I can't run very well and want a solid framerate, but I don't do it because it just doesn't work as I would like it to. It looks strange, I can't quite describe it perfectly, but the closest I can describe it is that the colours are somewhat washed out and don't look as bright or whatever.
The only reason I can think why I have had these experiences is because perhaps monitors generally aren't as good at upscaling as TVs. Which would make sense, because TVs have to display a very wide range of different resolutions, but with monitors I suppose they kind of expect you to do everything in the native res, I don't fucking know.

Take a look at my monitor specs and you will be able to see if it is shit at upscaling or something. If it is shit at upscaling, then we know what the issue is, and why I have experienced the phenomenon that I can only really describe as loss of quality in colour reproduction. What size are you considering? For $400 CAD, you could get a cheaper 27" 1440p monitor, although most I'm looking at are closer to $400 USD. A GTX 1070 is a lot of GPU power so you want to make sure you are getting a good monitor to match that.

1440p, IPS, 60hz. Maybe be OCable but if you stick to a single 780Ti I don't see the point since you'll hardly get over 70 fps with it on 1440p Ultra. If you'll get another 780Ti in the future you may look at something like the Asus PG278Q, which is a TN panel 1440p 120hz with G-Sync, but it's not available at the moment.

So from the looks of it, I'm taking it your system is playing these games but not super well. That makes it a bit easier to decide on a monitor.

The higher the resolution, the better your picture quality. Getting 1440p requires more graphics card power than a 1080p so your computer may complain. However, if you are getting a 27" monitor it should be 1440p. Everywhere that I read it strongly advised that you get 1440p if you get a 27" monitor. If your computer can't deal with it you can manually lower your resolution to 1080p although the picture quality will suffer a bit. I own two monitors (PB278Q 27.0 and ViewSonic XG2703-GS 27.0) (looking to get rid of the 1st one) and I love them both. I just manually changed the resolution to 1080p on the second monitor and everything looked bad/blurry. I don't know if that's what will happen to a 27" with 1080p by default so maybe someone else can chime in on that.
tldr: I recomend 1440p 27" but your GPU may complain.

Hz means refresh rate. So, a 144hz monitor will refresh the image on the screen 144 times a second. A 60hz monitor can do it 60 times a second, etc. Unless you plan on upgrading your CPU and GPU in the future, I would recommend ignoring 144hz monitors. This is because your computer will likely not be able to dish out images fast enough to warrant it. Additionally, mainly FPS shooters are where the extra hz will come in handy.
tldr: Go for 60hz and you'll be fine.

For your budget, I think IPS should be very doable. IPS will give you better color production and make things in general look better. Have you ever looked at someones laptop from the at an angle and couldn't see what was on the screen? That's pretty much TN in a nutshell.
tldr: Get IPS.
Supder tldr: If you want a 27" monitor go for a 27" 1440p 60hz IPS monitor. 1440p so it doesn't look bad (computer may complain) 60hz because you won't be able to run 144hz and benefit from it and IPS because you can afford it and it's good. Look at pcPartPicker, I have already filled in the form for you. Also, the top monitor (ASUS PB278Q) happens to be the other monitor I have so AMA.
