I'll be honest, my laptop knowladge is not extensive but 1.5k for that laptop is a joke. Something like this is leagues ahead. This is actually a very good laptop for gaming. i7 6700HQ, 16GB RAM, desktop 1060, 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD a 1080p 60Hz G-sync display.

I'm sure someone can find a even better laptop for the same price but this is just an example of what you can get with 1.5k.

Well if portable means "carry it in a backpack" instead of just something small and easy to put on a desk, some of the gaming laptops will be murder. But in terms of just a broad sense, the most balanced one that I see at a glance would probably be the ROG Strix. You get:

• A GTX 1060 - won't necessarily be pumping out 4k on ultra, but still great graphics nonetheless.
  
  
• 17 inch screen - assuming you wouldn't be plugging it up to a bigger tv or anything, you'd probably want to avoid any screen below 15 inches, but that can obviously come to preference
  
  
• 16 gigs of ram and an i7 for editing
  
  
• 1 tb of storage and an SSD (could easily add an external drive to that if you had to)
  
  
• Isn't maxing out your budget
  
  You could have some give or take for it. Like if you wanted to give up the screen size a bit for a better GPU (a 1070 or 1080). But that's probably around the general specs you'd want to look for at that price.
  
  I'd also consider asking /r/laptops or /r/suggestalaptop before making your final decision based on whatever you narrow it down to. They both have lists of some laptops within specific price points.

I'd go for Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74 or the MSI GT72VR Dominator-449 Pro The MSI is pretty big, I'd probably go for the Asus.

This Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74 would be a good pick... It supports VR very well, thanks mainly to it's powerful NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB Dedicated graphics card. In addition, it also has that G-SYNC technology you desire and sits well within your budget.

Ya the Asus I was talking about is a laptop as well.

I have to turn my settings way down, maybe to medium, and even then I'm still lagging. Going to have to try looking into a few things to see what's going on because mine doesn't look nearly that good and I think our laptops are pretty similar.

I ascended a few years ago but I wanted to ascend 2.0 mobile edition for the amount I travel for work.

This would be really nice to have, my current laptop had poor performance even when it came fresh 6 years ago and I'm hardly playing not demanding games at 10-15 FPS most of the time its miserable.

I would recommend this ASUS GL702VM because it comes with very good build quality, very good cooling even during gaming or video editing, and with great specs for the price point like quad core i7 which is one of the best CPU in the market, 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multi tasking, USB Type-C Gen 2, 1TB HDD for games storage, and of course 1060 GPU which is powerful for modern AAA games and much better than the 970M linked in your post, backlit keyboard which is a nice plus, good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, and it is 4.8 lbs so not so heavy to be carried around on a daily basis, the fans are loud under heavy load (intense gaming and heavy video editing) but it is not loud on light usage.

That is what i've understood as well. I'm however moving around a lot, once every half year/year to be more precise, thus my need to have a portable machine that lasts me while still being able to play some computer games (the new total wars). I don't understand the first point, would you mind clarifying. :)

I haven't bought a PC in a long time, figured Alienware and Dell were overpriced. Any suggestions? I'm running an AMD A10 and it overheats nonstop. I'm not a big gamer, but I want something that will play VR.

You never know what the previous owner did with the laptop. Buying A refurbished one is practically buying a used one and issues with laptops aren't always immedeatly apparent, so unless you know the store has great customer service and gives you a long warranty I wouldn't risk it.
