I really have no idea. And as always, im sure people will say "you cant get better machines for the price bro". Ugh. Stop being sheep. Windows machines are drastically better speced out even at this price range.

I just want better hardware for ChromeOS. We should be able to beat Windows on price and quality. But they just refuse to even try. They want to take the Apple approach without being Apple. Its frustrating.

The ASUS VivoBook F510UA would be a very good option for him. it comes with a pretty good 8th gen cpu which will do well with light CAD a lot of storage including an ssd and it fits perfectly into your budget too.

For photoshop I would recommend you a FHD display with sRGB over 80% (color accuracy) and a SSD for speed - but all of these combined don't go with your budget - and if you make and investment I'd try to get at least an 8'th gen I3-I5 - should be future proofing.

Well...with sRGB over 80% is hard to find a 15.6 under 600$ but with a LED-IPS display there are some options - check this noteb search

A budget option for you is this one: Asus VivoBook F510UA (US) - you should not have any problems running photoshop with it - you can find the configuration I gave you on amazon from 510$ with HDD and 570$ with SSD + HDD (i'd recommend the second option)

It is thin and light at only 3.7lbs. At $509, it's the cheapest laptop with i5-8250U and 8GB RAM, and the FHD screen is a big plus. Normally I would suggest its $599 variation with SSD pre-installed but since it's out of stock, I guess you will need to find one on your own, like this

For a few dollars over the $600, I would sacrifice and go for this ASUS VivoBook

Granted I know it's above your price range, but I got it "used" for $370, but there was nothing wrong with it and you can't even tell it was used. Very solid laptop, good battery life, lots of storage, and I haven't had it run into any problems with FL yet. If you can find it used or on sale I highly recommend this one

There's supposedly a slot left for an extra ram stick, while the other slot has an 8gb stick. The ram kit I have in mind is adding another 8gb to amke it a 16gb.

I havent ordered it yet, nor can I find any info on the ram brand. :( Im glad I didnt buy that DIMM one I mentioned though.

I am not good with 2-in-1 suggestions, but the ASUS VivoBook F510UA is a great laptop.

Acer Swift 3 has a very dim display, and only 14" display, I would choose from Aspire 5 (with MX150) and Asus Vivobook F510UA version if you can go without discrete graphics card. It's one of the most popular laptop on US under $600. Plus this one has SSD+HDD combo (so it could be better than 256SSD version, you can storage all your files on 1TB HDD), so your system runs without any lag, I do not recommend only HDD version for it.

Since you won't be doing anything requiring much performance you can get a basic i7 laptop and if you want to do a little gaming, you can take a look at some Ryzen Mobile systems although they do have some driver issues:

  The Aspire E15 is the only one with a dGPU if you want to play some games, it's great. But the Ryzen Mobile systems perform really well in a small package, especially the Acer Swift 3 and if you don't care about performance AT ALL, get the VivoBook as it's a great thin and light which is well built and performs quite well. If you're interested in a 2in1, get the Inspiron 13.

For general use the 8gb should be fine though, correct?

That's the laptop I have and used for university to do web development (and still do). Its fantastic. Beautiful display and long battery life. Never had any issues.

EDIT: Sorry, i didn't see you wanted i7 specifically. Still, you might want to consider it and keep some extra cash on hand, your choice :)

Both of these are solid choices with what you're looking for.

A very budget friendly option would be the ASUS Vivobook F510UA, it has dual drives: a 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD. This laptop is fairly portable, even with a 15.6" display. The weight is around 3.7lbs, which is very portable in my opinion for a 15.6" laptop. Most laptops support more than 1 drive, often 2 M.2 slots (2 SSDs). If you're doing general use programs, the i5 processor and 8 GB RAM are definitely powerful enough to run those kinds of programs.

I'm looking to get a laptop for college and I have been considering getting a used MacBook off ebay. Can anyone speak on behalf of these? Also Any reccomendations are very much appreciated. I'm not going to be doing a whole lot of gaming on it as I already have a desk top at home. Budget is around $500. I don't care much about having a good gpu but playing csgo should be doable on Intel graphics by now right?

This particular model-> ASUS VivoBook has a 14.2" display, weights 3.7 pounds and has the latest 8th gen processor, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD storage and pre-installed with Windows 10. Best to check it out at your local stores and see if it works for you!

this seems to fit you need except the CPU . The CPU is an i5 .

I like this option, but on the comparison section on the Amazon page, there's another laptop, an ASUS VivoBook listed that is cheaper, yet the processor speed says 3.4 as opposed to 1.6 Ghz. So that one seems better, but maybe I'm missing something?

Twice the cores of the first one, with almost all the benefits of the second one plus SSD and the price closer to the first.

The only thing lacking is the graphics card, but it is not like you were going to get any gaming performance out of a 940mx

The specs look about the same, except the storage (half as much SSD space). It's considerably thinner and lighter though.

It doesn't have a number pad, but it looks like the key spacing is wider, which would be good for my large hands.

You can upgrade the ram and the hard drive+ssd (the laptop has two slots) and if you want the extra cpu power you can get the i7 model.However this laptop doesn't have a dGPU so it may not be good if you are developing games and stuff like that.I'm not sure about linux compatibility but all the parts look right and should work on any distro of choice and to be honest there is not a perfect distro and any will do but i personally recommend ubuntu based distros like:
ubuntu-linux mint-Zorin os (i like this one)

I'm not sold on the eGPU route, as it'll cost you an extra ~$600 on top of the laptop cost. But you don't need much power for your other uses, so you could go with something inexpensive like this and add an eGPU:
