Clickbaity title for sure, but Thurrott is incredibly right. When Apple and Google have laptops and systems without the crapware, it makes Microsoft systems look inferior.

As far as computer subsidies with software is concerned, does anyone know of some factual data that software manufacturers are actually having machines subsidized with software vendors paying to be on the systems, or is this just something taken as dogma?

When I look at an item on the signature store, and compare it with something not there, the prices look comparable (if not the same).

ASUS X551MAV - Signature Store

ASUS X551MAV - Amazon

Of course, I'm assuming the Amazon one has the crapware. Am I missing something here?

u/construktz · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you want something with windows, just get an ASUS X551MAV. They're cheap, they have a 15.6" display, and they have enough HDD space to hold some data.

Chromebooks are simple, but they are generally quite small. Keep this one clean and it won't lag up on you.

u/CyberJeeves · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you don't mind using Google's suite of cloud based productivity applications, then the Acer Chromebook C720 would be a good choice at $200, which doesn't have any bloatware and can simply run Chrome browser and Docs. It's pretty fast too because it runs with a SSD.

If you prefer to have a Windows based comparable machine, then the HP Stream sells for the same price and comes with a year of MS Office 365 personal for a year.

If you'd prefer a larger form laptop running Windows, then the Asus X551MAV is only $230 and is 15.6", though it doesn't come with MS Office for a year.

u/throwaway · 2 pointsr/linuxquestions

I'm running stock ubuntu on one of these. It's quite good. Enough to run a couple of VMs.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I suggest the Stream 14. Though its HP, they are dominating the sub 350 dollar notebook.

Or you can get this. It has a weaker processor but 4GB of RAM.

u/dizzyzane · 2 pointsr/Minecraft

Minecraft is very CPU heavy, as it runs in a JVM rather than a nested programme.

Go for a single/dual core PC with a high clock rate and 8/16 GiB of RAM. An Intel HD integrated graphics card will run the game quite smoothly, however will be completely unable to handle any form of shaders unless you have 1-2 GiB vRAM.

After a quick Google, this looks to fit the bill, however you may want a machine that has the "Red Dot" as a laptop default cursor is not that good, and is heavily limited.

A normal mouse would be an issue to carry around, especially if not on a good surface.

Basically, my recommendation is to go for a laptop with a red dot and a good CPU, along with a medium sized storage (64/128 GiB SSD will be both fast and moderately cheap), and a integrated graphics card or slightly better.

This is one of the few times I'd recommend Lenovo.

Don't go Alienware, they'll rip you off.

I'd personally say the Asus, but I'm not a huge Mac fan. Also consider trying /r/SuggestALaptop for more assistance.

What I'm not sure I get is why you need a laptop this powerful for typing notes and coding simple programs? I looked up "asus laptop" on Amazon and found this top-selling laptop for $240 (American price, but I'm figuring it will be similar for Europe) and is plenty powerful for that.

Try this.

Hi, let me provide an actual helpful answer.

Minecraft is a Java application so it doesn't care too much about what video chipset you have; it wants to have a decent amount of ram and a fast processor, but a decent GPU clock speed is desired.

For example, this is my current mobile system. For specifications, we turn to the Intel ARK, which tells us that the processor in my laptop provides a base video clock of 313mhz but can run at a maximum of 750Mhz (an improvement over my wife's laptop which has a 500Mhz graphics clock and can play Minecraft okayish.)

Let's turn our attention to the laptop you posted. That laptop has an 'AMD quad Core A4 6400t' and if we look that up we can see that it only has a 350Mhz GPU clock speed...

...so no, I would not reccomend this laptop for a minecraft system for the following reasons:

  • GPU clock speed is too slow
  • RAM is insufficient (I would shoot for a minimum of 4GB)
  • You're probably going to want a faster processsor.

If you're trying to stay in the $300-or-lower, you do have options (my system is a good example) but you should look at the processor information to determine the graphics clock speed of the chipset before buying.

Did you say Celeron is the processor that most computers come with nowadays?

Because I managed to stumble upon an ASUS laptop that is 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB hard drive, and has a Intel Duel Core Celeron 2.16 GHz Processor for $249.00.

Here is the link.

What do you think?

u/TechBrainiacs · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks! What do you think of this one for 50 bucks less and with 4 GB RAM instead of 2?

u/ThorAXE064 · 1 pointr/skyrim

This is a screenshot of my laptop, if I don't have the game set to low graphic settings and in this window size the game is pretty unplayable. It can run Skyrim, not as well as my Xbox, but hey, the mods are fun.

here's the link to the laptop on Amazon

What would be the next best thing? This is stupid, but its color is really bugging me and the screen is a bit small.

Would this one be worth it?

u/3xphate · 1 pointr/buildapc

I also saw i5 if i didnt see wrong.

What do I actually have to find? Or rather: what are the requements?

EDIT: just searched dual core found this:http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Intel-Celeron-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6#featureBulletsAndDetailBullets_secondary_view_div_1418666597129

u/nlahnlah · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

one of these, probably. You could save maybe 50 bucks if you were OK with a smaller screen.

Looks like it goes on sale for $199 pretty regularly on Amazon, so wait for the next sale and buy it then.

u/CareerRejection · 1 pointr/buildapc

You may be getting no answers because this is a purely desktop building sub, but you may want to check out /r/SuggestALaptop and fill out all the criteria that they have on the sidebar to get an answer.

I'd check out this ASUS regardless as it seems to fit your bill for what you need right now. The other sub may still be better off giving you what you need, however.

u/nxqv · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks. I also found an Asus that's nearly identical to the Acer and is the same price. Which manufacturer has better low-end build quality?

u/darknessblades · 1 pointr/windows

with a tiny bit of search i found a (70$ more expensive) one that has a 500GB hdd, 4GB of ram and a bit of a better processor:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L49X8E6/ref=psdc_565108_t1_B00OBA5AZU

it should be able to run torents fine. (my laptop (XP) out 2005 still runs movies that are streamed on a fine/decent speed)

u/TWRABL · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

It was never more expensive than $280 in the last 6 months according to this.

http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Intel-Celeron-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6

Newer model for cheaper.

u/PwnageEngage · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

This is one i'm looking at. Best specs for the price. Its new and not a refurb.

Hey thank you so much man! This was totally helpful. looking for a laptop for requirements now.

Really appreciated.

But do you really think this could fit the Bill?? I would totally buy this in a heart beat.

you suggested it http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Dual-Core-Intel-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6

This could run around 60 FPS?

u/Davillamaster · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Well I've found this which is only $200 right now. Might be slow running Windows 8, but Linux should speed that up. I might get this.

EDIT: Reading reviews, it looks like the keyboard and mouse suck. I mean I assumed it wouldn't be the greatest for $200... I dunno. Still gonna look for more stuff.

u/Jonowar · 1 pointr/webdev

A $300 laptop with Ubuntu installed should be fine. If you get really serious you can upgrade it. Here's a decent Acer for $240, which will probably take Ubuntu just fine: http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Dual-Core-2-16GHz-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1411516831&sr=8-4&keywords=acer+laptop#productDetails

If all you're doing is coding on notepad though, having a native terminal doesn't even really matter. SublimeText (my personal favorite) works fine on Windows. NodeJS for things like Grunt/Gulp work fine on Windows, especially through something like git-bash or cygwin. Even ruby, python, and all that stuff run great on Windows. The only thing you won't be doing is building iOS apps.

u/nohre · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for the advice, guys! The advice and suggestions have definitely influenced my decisions.

I'm comparing these two:
http://www.amazon.com/15-6-Inch-Dual-Core-2-16GHz-Laptop-500GB/dp/B00L49X8E6/ref=psdc1_t1_B00KD5SEPK_B00L49X8E6

http://www.amazon.com/Asus-C200MA-DS01-ASUS-Chromebook-11-6-Inch/dp/B00KD5RUN2?SubscriptionId=AKIAIIU4RLP6VPFIYDGA&tag=wuggeecom-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00KD5RUN2

Any thoughts?

It seems like the power, windows familiarity, and program options make the not-chromebook the winner. The chromebook has an SSD and super long battery life, but in a given day I will probably not go 5 hours of continuous use without plugging in a device.

I'm probably going to wait a few days and see if any refurbished or deals appear on newegg to force my decision.

u/ABebout · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I hope you feel better! :) I wasn't following the saga, but I am now! Here are two great laptops you can get for under $250. Sorry mods for the links. Here is the ASUS 15.6-Inch HD Dual-Core 2.16GHz Laptop, 500GB for $219.99 and here is the Asus X551MAV-RCLN06 15.6" Laptop PC - Intel Celeron N2830 Processor 2.16GHz 4GB Memory 500GB Hard Drive DVD±RW/CD-RW Webcam Windows 8.1 64-bit, Black for $239.88 + $7.99 shipping. I had many Dells in the past and I've now been a good fan of Acer/Asus. :)

u/genardas · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Buy this laptop. www.amazon.com/dp/B00L49X8E6/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_q.R3tb1JXG02RTD1 It will be able to do your occasional Internet browsing and word. Buying a gaming labtop would mean overspending for something that will give you less performance and no expandability.

Next, build a desktop for $1300. If the size is what is scaring you from a desktop look into mini itx. For $1300 this will be good for streaming, gaming and anything else you throw at it.

The folks over at /r/buildapc will even pick out the parts for you.

Here's my build BTW.

For $1300 I got a monitor, a mech keyboard, a fully decked out pc and speakers.

Good luck and hope to see you over on /r/pcmasterrace
