The screen on the Asus is not quite as nice as the one on the macbook but it doesn't account for the $1000 difference in price. You could find one with a nicer screen for a couple hundred more if you looked around.

This one is the same price as the macbook but has more ports, twice the RAM, twice the SSD space, a higher screen resolution, a much better CPU, and dedicated graphics.

    What is apple even doing?

Do you know you need a full TDP quad-core CPU? Most thin machines are going to run ULV processors, which have 4 logical cores (dual-core with hyperthreading) and the new Skylake procs have great single core performance without needing full TDP.

There is the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW which has a full TDP quad-core i7 and doesn't have integrated graphics, but having the GTX 960M doesn't hurt with the 4k display. It does have your Thunderbolt port as well.

I would seriously consider scrapping the eGPU thing, though. They don't make much sense in the long run. You can build a small desktop with an mATX or another small form factor that will give you the full capabilities of a desktop in a much more compact form, and real GPU performance, then just get a less expensive laptop for the same overall price or even cheaper.

u/The--Technician · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Zenbook is awesome! However, based on how demanding some of the programs she will be running, can be, I RECOMMEND she gets the 15 inches version that has a quad core processor rather than a dual core... It also has more memory. I am referring to this ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW

u/trainedtech88 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

easily this powerful dell xps 15 is the laptop you will need for those demanding tasks. it house some awesome specs such a powerful Intel Core i7-6700HQ Quad Core Processor, 8GB RAM, a fast 256GB ssd storage a dedicated 960m gpu, great display quality, very light weight decent battery life and is also pretty durable. its stretching your budget however it would be ideal for your tasks. if you would like an awesome alternative this lightweight ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW would be a good option.

u/linkuei-teaparty · 3 pointsr/aiprogramming

Really depends on your applications. You'll be running scripts that will be very CPU intensive and having enough RAM would help. If you're running tensorflow then having access to a GPU would improve efficiency.

When posting build threads you'd be better off asking r/buildapc or r/suggestalaptop.

I'll help in the meantime.

  1. What's your budget?

  2. Are you looking for a laptop or a desktop?

  3. What operating system are you working on?

If you're on a budget and familiar with the windows operating system, I'd recommend any laptop with an Intel i7 CPU, 8-16GB RAM with a graphics card.

The DELL XPS15 $1899 $1699 would be a good choice.

Second best would be an Asus Zenbook pro ux501. $1499 $1299

If you're a fan of mac, perhaps a lower range macbook pro [$1349]
    (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0744MHLK4/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B0744N99WL) would help.

If you're really looking to make a significant investment, I'd say a desktop would be your best option. Investing in an

  • AMD Threadripper CPU

  • VEGA64 Graphics card

  • ASUS ROG (Republic of Gaming) zenith motherboard
    ]
  • 32GB RAM

would be the best. That's optimised for compute performance over gaming. If you're not into building computers you could get one built by your local computer store. However this system would be upwards of $3000-$5000. This would future proof you for the next 5 years easily.

Take a look at this website. It will show you how Civ: BE will run on laptops with a Nvidia GTX 940M, 950M, 960M or 970M. You can decide which one would be the best choice. I think a laptop with a Nvidia GTX 950M or better should be powerful enough.

> I care how my laptop looks, aesthetically. I prefer the minimalist/MAC look and less of a sci-fi look. Thanks!

Here are some models you could take a look on:

  • Samsung Notebook Pro 9 NP940Z5L-X01US - 4K touchscreen, Intel i7 quad core, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD, Nvidia GTX 950M for $1399
  • Asus ZenBook Pro UX501VW - 4K touchscreen, Intel i7 quad core, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, Nvidia GTX 960M for $1499
  • Dell XPS 15 9550 - 1080p or 4K touchscreen, i5 or i7 quad core, at least 8 GB of RAM (two accessible RAM slots), SSD/HDD, Nvidia GTX 960M starts at $1199

> You did read it because you talked about part of what I said in the middle of the text. You're taking the childish approach of saying you didn't read it because you can't properly respond, which I guess is what I would expect from you at this point.

No I did not read your wall of text thoroughly to be able to come up with a response. I just quickly looked at it to see if I see specs listed somewhere and if not, I couldn't be bothered.

> I get the complain that it is pricey, but you are going above and beyond to display your hate, when I don't think it deserves that. All the specs are better than those of comparable laptops except for the GPU, and even that is closing in. In some respects it's even better. You get a GPU that will run most games on med settings without the harm of that power consumption. It's great if you're not a gamer, and even if you are, it is serviceable. Not for everyone, but you clearly have some poor personal experience with it.

Alright, I just found the model you have, if you have the one with the i7 6920HQ. You're right, its specs are very good, can't argue with that. Then I scrolled down a bit. Price. $2700-$3000.

Are you mad? Those specs are good but they're nowhere near worth that much. That's an absolutely insane price to pay for a laptop and cannot possibly be justified if you're not just an apple fanboy. It's not just about being able to afford it, it's about making a poor consumer choice and wasting money.

The specs itself could not be any better, because a GPU any more powerful than a 960M would require a better cooling system, therefore sacrificing thinness, but these specs are not worth almost $3k.

If we purely focus on very slim ultrabooks that pack a punch, your MBP's main competitor is the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW.

The 6920HQ is about 10% better than the 6700HQ, so nothing groundbreaking. This has a 4k touchscreen, a full aluminium body, and a 512 GB PCIe SSD on top of that. All for $1500. And it can be nicely taken apart for upgrades/dust cleaning/repairs.

Like I said before, you get all that for half the price of the MBP. Just because someone at Apple always multiplies their standard retail price by 2 before they distribute their products. And then they make their fanboys pay for it. And they will, which is why Apple has lived so long with their ridiculous prices.

The products themselves aren't necessarily bad. They're often bad for their price.

The surface book seems to be a great option. But is very expensive, not sure you'll be willing to spend that much. Apart from that, this seems to be your best bet. There are rumors going around that this laptop might be upgraded with a 1060 (it seems to be the thinnest 1060 laptop), and i fully expect them to refresh this laptop in computex which is in june (as they usually do)

The XPS 15 is nice. You could have a look at the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW which would be a superb choice and tick just about all your boxes...It doesn't have a gaming look, but based on it's specs will run most games-- it will run LoL or Overwatch easily on high settings. It also has 4k touch screen, a brilliant quad core i7 processor, awesome 16 GB RAM , and a terrific 512 GB fast SSD... Where build quality is concerned, the Zenbook is very similar to the Mac and the XPS- having a full aluminum cover, solid keyboard and touch pad etc..It is also pretty light weighted and very sleek..

I'm in a similar situation (same major) and I've found a few good suggestions.

  1. Asus Q534UX-BBI7T16 It's a BB exclusive convertible, 16GB Ram, i7-6500u, TB3 port, Nvidia 950M, 5lbs. On sale for 1300 this week
  2. Asus UX501VW I currently have this laptop. Quad core i7, 960m, TB3 port, 96wHr battery (big), weighs about 4.5 but doesn't feel that heavy. I can answer any questions about this one if needed.
  3. Dell XPS 15 Very portable, checks all the boxes. This model has a non touch 1080p which helps on battery life. Ram can be upgraded (based on a quick google search) Also sometimes you can find refurbished models on ebay for less.
u/AdityaRav · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think the others have already mentioned but there is no better fit than the Asus Zenbook pro

NOTE: If buying a ram, look for the single 16GB ram in the below link that costs 65$.
But, with those software requirements it is better to get upto 32 gigs or atleast 24 gigs of ram. So you can buy a zenbook pro and update the ram on it with THIS. One 8gb ram is soldered and the other can be upgraded to a 16GB for 65$

I'm really sorry, for some reason I was convinced it had one. Glad you checked before purchasing and didn't have to be disappointed when it arrived.

This zenbook pro does have the thunderbolt 3 connector, however it is a bit larger at 15 inches, and is $1400.

I´d say the DELL XPS 15 or the ASUS zenbook are a pretty safe bet. Depends on how intense your applications are. They are light, fast, long battery life, decent processor and an SSD inside. Plus, they will run even new games (prob on low settings).

Important to note that video editing and rendering usually require a good processor (i7 is not always better than i5 but in this case, your applications make use of the additional threads that the i7 has over the i5).

If you really need high-end hardware, fastest processor, best graphic card, huge ssd and so forth, I would recommend getting a Sager laptop. These things will be bulky but they´ll manhandle everything.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-15-15-6-Inch-i7-6700HQ/dp/B019PB6X78/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1479421719&sr=1-1&keywords=dell+xps+15

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CQRNBJG/ref=psdc_13896615011_t1_B019PB6X78

There you go, one has 256gb ssd, the other 512gb ssd. In both cases you would want an external HDD which are super easy to set-up. Basically just plug in the USB and off you go.

EDIT: I´d prob go with the asus as you would want 16gb ram for your applications and i found the one below that basically does the same and is much cheaper, yet bulkier, less battery life and worse design obv

So, i just went through a similar buying process. I was looking for a travel editing laptop - didn't have to be top drawer, but i knew what I wanted out of it. I wanted 16gb of Ram, a SSD (preferably two, for OS and edit), decent internal graphics card and an i7 processor. I manged to find [this Zenbook] (https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-15-6-Inch-Touchscreen-i7-6700HQ-Thunderbolt/dp/B01CQRNBJG/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1478282278&sr=1-7&keywords=asus+zenbook) refurbished on sale at amazon for ~$900. I snapped it up, as it had everything I wanted plus a 4k touchscreen display. If you can find an equivalent deal, or want to wait until there's a price drop again, might be a good bet. But that is overkill for what you need, I believe.

Before I found that deal, I was looking pretty seriously at [this Dell laptop] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015PYYDMQ/ref=s9_simh_gw_g147_i3_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=RZKMKS8JW9EF4SF11QZV&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=6aad23bd-3035-4a40-b691-0eefb1a18396&pf_rd_i=desktop). It's only $770 for the base, and for an extra ~$40 you can get another 8GB of RAM to install into the open slot, and the laptop even has a slot for an extra SSD / HDD - depending on if you want fast storage or mass storage, and how much cash you want to splash. So the only real sacrifice then is you're not getting an i7 processor - but i doubt that'll be a real stumbling block if you're just working with wedding footage. Shouldn't be too much heavy VFX processing needed.

In fact, it's very similar to the first link in your post above - the big trade seems to be that the one in your post has an optical drive and the Dell doesn't. However i don't know if you can upgrade the MSI same as the Dell, so the 8gb vs 16gb of ram might be an issue. Also, the MSI has a 1TB HDD, as opposed to the SSD + open hard drive slot on the Dell.

Your second link is very similar to the MSI, however it has a 5400 RPM internal drive, which i would NOT recommend for any sort of editing work.

Third link (comment) is a nice laptop, with everything you would want - but i'd argue you can get all of that from the Dell with upgrades, and save a few hundred. Again, only loss is i5 versus i7 processor.

Hope this was helpful!

I do not recommend the new 13 Macbook "Pro". There is nothing pro about it. Given the price, it is not worth $2000. A dual core processor is laughable for that price.

If you're adamant you need a MAC, this 15" model is the same price with a quad core CPU and can be speced with a discrete GPU.

Alternatively, you can get a comparably powered laptop for only $1000

$1000 XPS 13 Dual core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD 13.3" 3200 x 1800 screen

Or a much more powerful laptop for around $1500

ZenBook Pro UX501VW

Quad core i7, 16GB RAM, 15.6" 4K/UHD display, 512GB NVME SSD, GTX 960.

Again, the new 13" Macbook Pro is not for content professionals.

u/AzeTheGreat · 1 pointr/factorio

I can't really guess that well...

For reference, I have this laptop (if you could bear to forego mac...you can get so much more for your money, but I understand if you don't want to).

Now, just glancing at the specs, it looks like your CPU might actually perform better than mine since Factorio doesn't use multiple cores that much from my understanding. For reference, I don't start seeing UPS drops until I scale up reasonably high; I first hit them going for the 20M circuits achievement when I had 32+ (hopefully my memory isn't exaggerating here...) belts of ore coming in constantly.

The graphics card is obviously going to be worse, but Factorio doesn't hit it too hard so I wouldn't worry much.

Multiplayer should be more network based...and I'm not sure why Bob's would hurt it. I wonder if the game caches all possible sprites in your vram? That might explain it...and then you'd want at a better gpu (that's pure speculation though).

LoL is pretty basic in terms of needs. PUBG will need a GTX1050 graphics card. That will help with the audio/video production also. For video editing, you probably want a high speed SSD on the laptop, and also 16GB of RAM. A 4K display would be good for video editing - might even be a requirement if you are editing 4K videos. This one is a pretty solid choice within your budget (though it does have an order 6th gen i7).

Massive difference i9t wento from 16-20fps to 30-46fps without changing a single setting ( and I did set the triple recompiler and all of thath before hand following the guide)

now I'm wondering what might be a better long term solution I can't play with that blowing air on my ears, and the kids have to scream as we play mario kart with this thing.

I already re-pasted the CPU so that's not an option.

this is the laptop I'm using

a little old but still going strong

I have plenty to recommend, all are from ASUS

  1. https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH74-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B015ZG997I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468688522&sr=8-1&keywords=rog+gl552

  2. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-G501VW-BSI7N25-x2033-Notebook/dp/B01E5YKVKK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468688597&sr=8-1&keywords=rog+g501

  3. https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX501VW-Touchscreen-i7-6700HQ-Thunderbolt/dp/B01CQRNBJG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468688543&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+ux501

Number 2 and 3 are actually the same model (You won't believe it) However, number 3 is more expensive because it added more to the productivity and has an incredible, superfast hard drive in it. However, the graphics card VRAM is halfed and it is 2Gb compared to the 4Gb of the number 2.

number 2 and 3 are thin laptops. They are both under an inch thick, and has great build quality.

Number 1 is a bit cheaper. It might have a bit less build quality, but you can have an option to add a SSD while number 2 only has an HDD.

1 and 2 will fit your budget no problem. Number 3 is supposedly $1500 however, you might find some people selling at a cheaper price.

    To tidy things up

  4. Cheaper, a bit less build quality, a bit thicker, has 1Tb HDD able to add 128Gb SSD in the option with a cost. GTX 960M 4Gb VRAM, 16Gb RAM

  5. Thinner, great build quality, no SSD only 1Tb HDD. GTX 960M 4Gb VRAM, 8Gb RAM, 4k matte screen

  6. Thinner, great build quality, Super fast 512Gb SSD, GTX 960M 2Gb VRAM (half VRAM of others), 16Gb RAM, Thunderbolt, 4k touch screen (has a super glossy screen so it might have reflection problems)

    Good luck.

I'm certainly interested in this device. How would you compare it against this laptop?

Comparing the Apple 13 2016 2.0GZ to a similar priced windows alternative like the ASUS ZenBook Pro:

Comparioson | Macbook | ZenBook
:--|:--| :--
CPU | 6360U | 6700HQ
Geekbench3 | 6367 | 12286
APU grafics | Iris 540 | HD 530
APU benchmarks | +40%* | relative
GPU | none | GTX960M
Iris540 vs GTX960M | relative | +98%*
SSD | 256 | 512
RAM | 8GB | 16GB
RAM speed | DDR3 at 1866 MHz | DDR4 at 1600 MHz
Thunderbolt 3 | 2 | 1
Other ports | Audio Jack | 1x Gen 2 USB 3.1 TypeC, 3x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI, Bluetooth 4.0, SDXC reader
Display Resolution | 2560 × 1600 | 3840 x 2160 (=+100%)
Touch | No | Yes
Price | $1400 | $1460

You have to value the added resell value and iOS integration quite a lot to chose the MBP over the ZenBook with twice the CPU power, twice the GPU power, twice the screen resolution. If you still do, that's fine. Many do. I don't.
