There's an amazing Irish novel called At Swim, Two Boys.

You could very superficially call it a romance -- as the main plot revolves around two teenage Irish boys around the time of the Easter Uprising (WWI-era) but it's about so much more.

It's about the Irish character, queer solidarity, the absuridty of the events surrounding the two lovers ... and of course one of the most achingly beautiful romances I've ever read.

My only warnings are: it's stream-of-consciousness, not quite Joycean but almost. And it is heavily Irish, meaning the dialect is hard to get into. But once you do you will be utterly enveloped in the world.

I'm way late to this party, but there is a truly exceptional book called At Swim, Two Boys by an Irish author. It is set around the time of the Easter Rising in Ireland and the story and writing are fantastic.
