This looks sweet, but I cannot justify a PLX-1000 at $700 when I can get a super OEM Audio Technica AT-LP1240-USB for $350.
I have this audio technica and while I haven't ripped my vinyl from it yet I assume I can direct rip to my pc? It's running through my Yamaha receiver which runs into my HTPC. I don't have a preamp for it since the Yamaha has it built in which is "fine for now".
Assuming they're in good shape. $600 for a pair is pretty common, although they are pretty hard to find in my area also. $400 will get you a brand new Super OEM table, like the Audio Technica ATLP-1240. So that is something to consider.
This is a DJ turntable, not a listening turntable. It's a great unit (though I'd have to suggest the "Super OEM" 1240 instead which actually surpasses the Technics 1200: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-LP1240-USB-Direct-Turntable/dp/B007R9B0UQ) but the wrong sort of one for your average home listener. Namely that they are direct drive which translates to more noise from the motor. In a DJ application the noise is drowned out by pumping loud music but at home not so much.
I recently upgraded from an LP60 to a LP1240 (secondhand) and I've been seriously underwhelmed and am having problems.
The LP60 sounded crisper with cleaner sound which shouldn't be the case for a much more expensive table with a cartridge costing more than the previous table all together.
The 1240 wasn't nearly loud enough so I had to add a preamp, I know there is a built in one but after trying every possible Line/phono config it still was't giving me the volume the LP60 had.
Also I am getting a loud hum which I can't seam to figure out. I attracted a ground wire from the turntable to the preamp which reduced hum but is still prevalent. I'm almost positive this hum is stemming from the turntable itself as when I used the LP60 with the amp there was no hum whatsoever and the hum is still there when the preamp isn't connected.

I'm waiting a few months to get myself a pair to replace my Stanton STR8-60s.
And cartridge as well. I owned a mid-range Audio Technica Lp-1240 and Nagaoka mp-110 cartridge. I don't think I will upgrade the player as long as it doesn't wreck beyond repair. I only need to save up to upgrade my 'basic' audioengine 2a+ desktop speaker to some good amp and speakers. We are at the opposite side side basically. Good luck hunting for a new turntable.

Audio Technica LP1240
I've connected my Marshall Stanmore to my AT LP-1240 using the TT's internal phono pre-amp and it works like a charm.
I can switch it easily from my TT to Bluetooth and the sound is pretty great, IMO.
