If you decide to get one someday, make sure that you get "active noise cancelling" headphones. If they just say "noise cancelling", "noise isolating" etc., they are not the ones you want.

I've found these earbuds to be satisfactory. I wear them when I run near traffic and it makes things a lot more peaceful.

That's exciting! I love to travel, and flying is an amazing experience although it can be annoying sometimes. I've not done a flight that long before, but I've done like 12 hour flights. You're going to want to sleep a lot, so bring anything that will make that comfortable - sleeping pills, a mask, earplugs. Noise canceling headphones are wonderful on planes too, in fact that's where they work the best because of the droning noise from the plane. If you use regular headphones, you often have to turn them up all the way which isn't good for your ears. You don't have to spend a lot, I use ones similar to these.

You can't bring food or drink to the airport, but you can buy stuff after security and bring it on the plane. It's a good idea to stock up on snacks/drinks, because although they'll feed you on the plane, it'll be on their schedule and you might get hungry. You can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up at a drinking fountain after security. Also, chew gum to help with your ears popping.

You can usually pick your plane seat on the airline's website. Some you have to wait until you check in (24 hours before your flight) but I believe most now let you do it anytime. You can find the type of plane you'll be flying in on the airline's website, and then look up the plane on Seat Guru. It basically reviews the seats. At a minimum, you'll want to avoid middle seats on a flight that long, unless you're sitting with people you know so you can sit together. You can usually pay to upgrade your seat to one with more leg room (like the exit row), which may be worth it on a flight that long.

Edit: You said you were nervous, and I think the most nerve racking things is turbulence and landing/taking off. The plane will bounce around some, and that's completely normal! What I do to help keep myself calm is watch the flight attendants. They do this all the time, and seeing them perfectly normal, usually with bored looks on their faces makes me feel better if there's a lot of turbulence!

I know what you mean. I use Hearos for sleeping in my room and board house and they work great once you get past I have a head cold feeling but on a plane, they seem to make the engine whine louder.

Try active noise canceling earphones. You have to make sure they are truly active noise canceling and they should solve the problem.

Bought them four years ago and use them when I travel for work (25-40% of the year). I'm sure there are better ones but with music these are able to eliminate crying babies at the very least.

Edit: Yes, they are battery powered rather than charged. That being said, I am only on my second (third at most) AAA battery since purchasing these.

I don't mind at all! I use Audio Technica ATH-ANC23's. I occasionally find the need to cancel out the world around me while I do my thing. It's wonderful.

You could try to find him some noise canceling headphones. I have these Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 earbuds but these Taotronics earbuds seem to have solid reviews and a less bulky control switch.

They run on most websites 40-70$ just find a reputable dealer. I got my pair off of eBay for $45, from an authorized dealer. It came in its original packaging and wrap. The noise canceling on it works good. The volume can go really high and pitch,bass, and treble are perfect. It comes in a little silk pouch with foam ear buds and I think 5 other different sizes of rubber in ear pieces that range in good sizes. With it comes extra connectors to studio equipment like amplifiers or I think so. The little noise canceling box has a on/off switch for when you want it or not and a AA battery fits into it. The life of the battery hasn't died on me yet after almost 2 months of use. I swear by these ear buds. If you have any more questions about these feel free to ask. Sorry I'm no help with other headphones!

Edit: the foam tips are great for extended time periods! It molds to your ear!

Looking for a help choosing between a couple pairs of headphones, and maybe some suggestions as well.

I'm willing to spend up to $85 and I'll be using these headphones for work, school, and music. Noise cancelling would be great, but if they block out sound just fine without it that works too.

I've found a couple that might work for me (like these Taotronics or these Audio-Technica) but I'm not sure if there's something better out there. Any ideas?

Do you already have tinnitus? If so, you might go nuts with completely sound proof earplugs because all you'll hear is the constant ringing in your head. Considering you already have tinnitus, you might invest in white noise generator for sleeping.

Really? I saw people recommend the earbuds by bose that have active noise canceling as well as audio technica. Is this the general thought on this sub? I'm not very knowledgable so I may be wrong.

In my experiences they block out some of the sound. However, wouldn't active noise canceling block out significantly more sound, offering a better isolating experience? What I'm saying is that I don't think that the noise isolation completely makes up for active noise canceling.
