Noise cancelling headphones, at least mine, are really good at blocking out low frequency noises. High frequency noises still get through. So you can still hear people talking. If this is true, it's not the active cancellation part, it's the user cranking up the volume too much. Which could happen for any headphones.

These are the headphones I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HWJT1A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're pretty good in my opinion. My work started construction this week and they have been a god send. If you sit there with no music playing, you'll hear a good amount of stuff still (coworkers talking, people banging shit around, etc.). You won't be able to hear the A/C blowing in air, that random hum that seems to always be on, the rush of the traffic. Once you turn on some music though, your coworkers will have to wave their hand in front of you get get your attention.

Edit: I just read that story again. Maybe? I guess it could have happened, but I don't know if it was the active noise cancellation part that did it for him. I think it was just over-ear headphones in general.

These saved my life on two return runs from NY to Honolulu and you can't beat the price:

Most of the complaints are from people with giant heads :) YMMV.

I'd probably get a pair of noise cancelling headphones and a tablet.

Say something like

[Audio Technica AUD ATH-ANC7B Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Closed-Back Headphones - Wired] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002HWJT1A/ref=psdc_12097479011_rv_t1_B00M1NEUKK)

[Fire HD 8 Tablet with Alexa, 8" HD Display, 32 GB] (https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Amazon-Fire-HD-8-Tablet-With-Alexa/dp/B01J94T4R2/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526083898&sr=1-2&keywords=fire%2Bhd&th=1)

If you get the Fire HD tab, I'd sign up for a trail of Amazon Prime. That way you can take advantage of Prime Video, which lets you download and watch movies and TV Shows on the Fire HD for free.

You'd also be able to read books on it, your local library should have books you can "check out" for the kindle.

This may not be a popular opinion here, but for planes, especially long haul flights, I highly recommend noise cancelling headphones. The Bose ones are great, but pricy. I have a pair of Audio Technica active noise cancelling headphones and would not fly without them. It's like night and day how much more enjoyable the flight is. And I think they sound fine too.

These ones are in your budget: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-ANC7B-QuietPoint-Noise-Cancelling-Closed-Back/dp/B002HWJT1A/

I have those and like them.

u/geekswrath · 5 pointsr/gadgets

Have a pair of ATH-ANC7B's that I use for trips. The only problem with active noise cancelling headphones is they only drown out constant background noise. Think road, engine, A/C sounds. They actually make it much easier to hear someone talking to you. Granted if you are listening to music or whatever then that isn't much of a problem. Most closed, over the ear, headphones will do well for what you want but earbuds may be a better choice. I've never been able to find a pair that fit in my ear quite right though. They always fall out or develop an odd muffle to the audio.

I didn't realize I was obliged to provide a suggestion. Here you go:

Sennheiser HD 380 PRO

Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B

u/FreelanceSocialist · 4 pointsr/headphones

Sennheiser HD280 Pro - Durable as hell, good isolation, comfortable, ear-cups swivel and allow the headphones to "fold flat" for easy storage in a backpack. Good sound ($100).

Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B - Comfortable, active noise-cancelling, great sound, fairly lightweight. Not as durable as the HD280, but also folds flat and is geared towards portability/travel. Of all the noise cancelling headphones I have tried, I like these the most. Also, the current retail package includes an airline adapter (~$125).

u/zackofalltrades · 4 pointsr/sysadmin

I have the earlier version of this Audio Technica model: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-ANC7B-QuietPoint-Noise-Cancelling-Closed-Back/dp/B002HWJT1A/

I compared them to a set of Bose QC2's that a family member has, and wasn't able to tell the difference.

Another option is to get an set of hearing protective over-ear muffs (like these: http://www.peltor.com/peltor.com/non_detail.cfm?prod_family=Muff%20H10&ind_prod_num=H10A001), and wear them alone or with earbuds under them, for a totally passive (no batteries required!) and incredibly inexpensive solution.

u/Ghosty141 · 3 pointsr/headphones

> definitely need noise-cancel

See, that's where the problem starts, you won't find any headphones with active noise cancelling at the 100$ level.

The cheapest headphone I can recommend with active noise cancelling and all of the attributes you described is the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B which runs you around 180$. If you can shell out the money these are absolutely great.

u/FantaToTheKnees · 3 pointsr/belgium

Quick google for myself brought up that they're nr 1 on this headphonesaddict.com list.

I'm prob going for the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B; I'm not ready to drop 300+ EUR on travelling headphones yet.

I bought the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7 for train rides to the city. Reviews said they were as good as the Bose or better, for less than 1/2 the price. I'd say that's spot on. Very comfortable for long periods, great sound, good noise canceling (but maybe a notch below the Bose).

u/yumyumcabanossi · 2 pointsr/headphones

Would he consider a pair of IEMs/canalphones like the Brainvavz M3 or B2 or the Etymotic HF5? These would provide much better isolation than than a set of on-ears and are also much more portable with better sound quality. Also, with the addition of some comply foam tips, these become pretty comfortable.

If you're really looking for that form factor, though, the only one that comes to mind is the Audio Technica ANC7b. The sound quality is OK and the active noise cancelling will block out the airplane engine noise(and to a lesser extent the screaming babies and loud snorers due to their closed design). That would save you a couple of bucks.

Otherwise, as already mentioned in the thread, the ES7 are a great sounding set. One thing that you may not notice from the pics, though, is that the cups are really shiny(like mirrors!) and might be a bit too flashy for some people's tastes.

u/queeraspie · 2 pointsr/aspergers

I have these ones, but they're sort of expensive for kids. I did an amazon search for noise cancelling headphones for kids, but I'm not sure what your must-haves are.

I've heard lots of people recommend these sound protection earmuffs, like people use for home improvement or at gun ranges.

u/riplox · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I've done a lot of headphone searching in the past because I'm really picky. I'll just give a list of a few I think would be good for you:

Sony MDR7506 $84

Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B $117

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 $140

Grado Prestige Series SR125i $145

u/Smallmammal · 2 pointsr/Vive

These things are really expensive because they're aimed at business travelers who can expense these with their company accounts. Creative does make $70 budget nc headphone for normal people:

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-HN-900-Noise-Cancelling-Headphones/dp/B005YR0X4W

These from Audio-Technica are $30 more and have tons of great reviews:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002HWJT1A/ref=psdc_12097479011_t1_B005YR0X4W

I've tried the Creative nc headphones on a plane, they work fine. I'll probably pick up one of these when my vive gets here.

While many appreciate the built-in headphones of the rift, I like the flexibility here. I always expected to use noise cancelling headphones with VR. I'm surprised this isn't talked about more often.

u/BraveSquirrel · 2 pointsr/sysadmin
u/OpticalNecessity · 1 pointr/misophonia

I picked up THESE on amazon. They're currently on sale for $25 cheaper than what I paid for them (gerrr) - $123.16 + prime free shipping (if you qualify). Used them for flying over seas and they work great.

Great sound quality and comfortable.

These are the first set of noise cancelling head phones so I don't know if this is normal but initially (first hour), I got a really bad head ache. took them off and was fine, Put them on and the head ache came back. The next flight, no problems at all. It might have just been an adjustment period? Or dehydration? who knows, anyway, just throwing it out there.

u/surnik22 · 1 pointr/todayilearned

I would highly recommend these
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-ANC7B-QuietPoint-Noise-Cancelling-Closed-Back/dp/B002HWJT1A
$125 is normal if you find them on sale which usually isn't hard they can be found for under $100. They have solid sound cancelling and a good sound. Often compared to Bose Quiet Comfort and beat or at least equals it in quality but cheaper. I have had a set for 4ish year and they are solid.

u/Combat_Carl · 1 pointr/DaftPunk

I bought these a couple years ago

I don't remember them being that expensive though. The noise cancellation is a big plus. They are comparable to Bose's TP-1A's IMO.

u/SpartanJones · 1 pointr/headphones

Looking for a good pair of noise cancelling headphones, at the request of one of my family members, to be used when flying on airplanes

She's not a big audiophile or anything of that sort, so sound quality isn't a topmost priority. I'd say comfort + ability to cancel noise is the #1 priority.

Not looking to spend more than $100

I saw these on Amazon from audio technica, but certain reviews complain about comfort which is why I'm hesitant to pull the trigger

Also added this into the mix:

u/CombTheDessert · 1 pointr/headphones

I had a pair of these and they're falling apart - they didn't bug me, but they were a bit too warm. Same sort of idea, as far as ANC goes though right?

u/MisallocatedRacism · 1 pointr/headphones

I have four very long flights coming up (two 13 hours and two 9 hours), and I am interested in some comfortable active noise cancelling headphones. To be honest I've never tried noise cancelling on an airplane, but I hear it helps. I'm also willing to try anything to make those flights more comfortable, so I figure that's a way to go.

Over ear would be best I think. Budget is $100-200.

I've looked into Bo$e, but that seems like overkill. Audio Technica has these, but I'm not sure how comfortable they are. I've always read here than Sennis are great, and I'm interested in these, but they don't have noise cancelling.

Am I on the right track? Any help is appreciated.

u/newsoundwave · 1 pointr/starcraft

i've had to use these for 12 hours at a time (flying between asia and US) and they're just as comfy and only $15 or so more, while preserving my audio quality much better.

For the most part, bose headphones don't have the audio quality that matches their price point. Bose computer speakers and sound systems definitely do, but their headphone sales are basically from hype and their reputation from making incredible speakers.

I'm not saying I'm against Bose, I just can generally find a better alternative to every Bose model out there for almost any situation.

u/KeyboardChemistry · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

If you're around the $100 price range the audio-technica noise-cancelling headphones seem the only way to go. Quality comparable, although obviously bested, by the $300+ Bose headphones.

Unless for some reason you don't value noise cancelling, -- then the open-ear ones sound better at lower prices though. But they make you a douchebag when you wear them in public.

Edit: I mean these ones specifically. They are fucking phenomenal beyond any expectations I had for headphones in this price range-- including construction quality and comfort. And this isn't just someone who is excited because its the first pair of expensive headphones they've ever comparing them to the apple earbuds they've used since 8th grade (like 90% of the time someone rave reviews a "premium" item).

u/yourname812 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I have these Audio Technica ATH-ANC7b and I like them a lot. Amazon has them for $122. My only complaint with them is that they do leak sound a little, but it's not that big a deal unless you need something absolutely silent.

u/EddieBshp · 1 pointr/ReviewThis

Hmm, I recently had to sell my good pair of headphones (Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B btw for OP I would recommend these) and have been looking to buy a new pair for a bit cheaper, I might as well give these a shot. If they're as good as you say they should be a steal for $30. Thanks, I've been stuck using earbuds for months :/

u/NoobSingh · 1 pointr/Sikh

Lol, this is a funny thing to read, nostalgic really, however, I kind of know your feel, some of my headphones don't fit over my turban and some of them do. Which type of turban do you tie? I wear audio technica which work well with my dhumalla, but my dhumalla isn't really big compared to most. I wear these when I hit the gym and go on flights.

When I gamed, I used to use turtle beach px21, that used to fit well when I used to tie a Gol pugh, haven't worn it since though since I don't play games anymore.

Best bet is google oversized headphones and inquire, I find asking on amazon would give you the best results if no one here can provide answers for you

u/alpacapicnic · 1 pointr/gadgets

This is probably not the answer you're looking for, but my office bought us Audio-Technica noise-cancelling headphones that kind of bite. They randomly work/don't work/work on one side only and barely cancel out noise to begin with. So 1, don't buy those, and 2, my solution is to wear my earbuds which are incredible IMO and then to play pink noise. The JLAB earbuds cancel a bit of noise to begin with because of the suction, so even when you're listening to music you can barely hear what's going on around you.

u/guttata · -1 pointsr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

I have these: http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-ANC7B-Noise-Cancelling-Closed-Back-Headphones/dp/B002HWJT1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319392270&sr=8-1

Reportedly the noise canceling is as good or better than a $300 pair of Bose. Obviously the bass isn't as good as Bose, but they're more than adequate and now that they're down to around $100, they're a steal. I've had mine for about 2 years and I love them.

u/PGleo86 · -3 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

You have a few good options around $100, $200, and the Bose QC15's own $300 price point, all of which should outperform the Bose. Cheers!
