I would like to preface this by saying this is what I would do for me personally knowing what I know now about my own skin. If I were making suggestions for someone else I think this list would be very very different.

Under $50:

Heimish All Clean Balm [$17]

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion [$11]

CeraVe Healing Ointment [$9]

Australian Gold Tinted Sunscreen [$13]

This particular budget was actually a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. I prioritized Sunscreen first, because that is an important product to me and it is a product that was difficult to find something I was happy using every day. I picked the cleanser next because I knew it was going to be pricey at this budget. I really think oil cleansing has done wonders for my skin. I especially like balms. I find them much easier to use. I occasionally like to use a straight oil, but on a daily basis using something with an emulsifier is just more practical. In reality if I had to stick to this budget all the time, I would probably sub out the Heimish for an emulsifying cleansing oil like Kose or the Simple one. I just haven't used either of those yet, I wasn't comfortable substituting that for the sake of this exercise.

I don't think I would be totally happy with this routine long term. It's not as hydrating as I tend towards and it doesn't have any actives. The CeraVe lotion is nice, but I wouldn't LOVE using it. I picked this over the CeraVe cream because I find that the cream does not actually sink into my skin. It's nice over other thinner formulas, but it tugs at my skin uncomfortably if used on its own.

Under $100

Heimish All Clean Balm [$17]

Stridex Maximum Acne Medication Pads [$4]

Dear, Klairs Supple Proparation Facial Toner [$22]

Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Solution [$15]

Holika Holika Skin and Good Cera Super Cream [$17] (this is discontinued, but as long as it's $17 at Amazon or CVS where I bought it I will probably keep using it)

Jojoba Oil [$8 @ Trader Joe's]

CeraVe Healing Ointment [$3] [Travel Size]

Australian Gold Tinted Sunscreen [$13]

TBH this is making me realize how much money I actually spend on my routine. GEEZ I DIDN'T NEED THIS TODAY. Essentially I just took out the CeraVe lotion and added my HG Hydrating/Moisturizing Layers. The Klairs seems like so much of a splurge here, but it really truly is one of my favorite products to use. It is very hydrating and soothing to me. I also added the Stridex because it's cheap, effective, easy to use and this is one active I know I can tolerate if I keep up my hydration/moisturization.

I think the CeraVe Healing Ointment is a true workhorse and I would never be with out it, BUT I don't actually use very much of it. I mean I bought my first 3 oz. tube 9 months ago and I don't think I've even used half of it. With the smaller budget it makes more sense to get a bigger tube because it can be SUCH a multitasker, but since I have a few more items in the way of "moisturizing" here, I would probably purchase a very small tube of the ointment (mostly for my lips and the corners of my nose) and also incorporate Jojoba Oil. I love Jojoba for cleansing and for mixing into other products. My very chapped lips also DRINK UP oils like no one's business.

I am ashamed to say this routine is still short of some things I use pretty frequently, but I would still be happy with it. It has everything I actually need.

Under $200:

Heimish All Clean Balm [$17]

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser [$15]

Stridex Maximum Acne Medication Pads [$4]

Stratia Soft Touch AHA [$14]

Dear, Klairs Supple Proparation Facial Toner [$22]

Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Solution [$15]

Stratia Rewind [$16]

Stratia Liquid Gold [$24]

Holika Holika Skin and Good Cera Super Cream [$17]

Jojoba Oil [$8 @ Trader Joe's]

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 Soothing Repairing Balm [$15]

CeraVe Healing Ointment [$3] [Travel Size]

Raw Honey [$7ish]

Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask [$5]

Australian Gold Tinted Sunscreen [$13]

Again these all the same products as before. The three additions I use frequently are the LRP B5, Stratia Liquid Gold, and Stratia Rewind. The Raw Honey and the Queen Helene are masks that I know work for me and are fun to use. I very rarely use the honey buy itself, but it is lovely as a mask mixed with the Klairs (thanks to u/LGBTQBBQ for that tip). I've also included the Stratia Soft Touch here because it is on my list to try. I'm pretty sensitive to actives and I think a 10% Mandelic is something I could handle.

I actually really enjoyed having to think about my routine like this. I really thought I had paired down my routine quite a bit and I suppose I have, but even the $200 budget would not be enough to repurchase everything I use on a monthly basis. This (mostly) doesn't even include things I want to try or things I have around just in case or just because. Realistically I would have a couple more wash off masks, and eye cream (even though it is not at all necessary imo), at least one other kind of sunscreen, and maybe one or two other moisturizers.

But I guess I'm that kind of extra bitch.

...and like its a hobby right? It's ok to spend money on a hobby.

At least that is what I'll tell myself.

I'm a big fan of Australian Gold's tinted sun screen, it's 50 SPF and not too thick, I wear it every day and have had the same tube for maybe 6 months now :)

u/gigantic_trex · 5 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I know this really isn't what you're looking for, but assuming it's available in stores near you, you could go ahead and buy it, try it out, and just return it if it doesn't work. Most places have really relaxed return policies, especially if you keep your receipt. You could also contact the company and see if they have any samples they could send you.

This post has some product pictures that might give you better insight into the tint; it's pretty popular so you'll probably find more reviews and pictures by doing a sub search. There's also quite a few pictures on the Amazon posting and some of the costumer questions and answers might be helpful.

Maybe stick with the physical sunscreen then? I've just ordered 2 bottles of this Australian Gold sunscreen which is hyped over at /r/skincareaddiction.

This topic is controversial because there isn't a clear answer. Comments for this topic are generally speculative. You can read some other posts discussing this here and here.

One anecdotal experience you can look at for the UVB protection is on the Amazon page. If you click on the "customer images" section you can see a review where a guy with one hand tried to apply AGB sunscreen without any help and only got part of his back; there is a stark difference between where he did and did not apply.

Another thing to note is that in many countries outside the US do not require manufacturers to list the amount of UV filters in their sunscreen so my question would be how do people base their opinion for sunscreens in those countries? Also, the Skin Cancer Foundation a seal of recommendation that they give to sunscreens that pass their tests and there are sunscreens with low amounts of physical filters which make the cut. If we can't trust the FDA or other organizations to provide quality control then who can we rely upon?

I'm sure many sunscreens don't live up to their stated SPF but what is the cause? Is it the percentage of the filters or is it due to other factors such as inconsistent batches and poor storage of the products? Both? I don't know because I'm a random stranger on the Internet with no proper education in this field. I'm not familiar with which sunscreens have been shown to not have their stated SPF. Were they just the physical ones with a low percentages of filters, or were there ones with high percentages of filters as well? Were there combination and chemical sunscreens that also didn't meet the claim? The point I'm trying to make is that we know some sunscreens don't meet the SPF they claim but I haven't seen conclusions drawn on the exact reason for this.

It's easy to think that higher percentage of filters = more protection but is this a linear pattern or logarithmic? What other factors besides the percentage of the UV filters play a role in the overall SPF?

The main thing to focus on with sunscreen is applying enough and applying often enough. (Also, my questions are rhetorical if it isn't obvious. I don't expect you to answer them.)

u/subversivez · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Thank you for reading it! I wouldn't suggest buying the sunscreen in the US however, since LRP has to reformulate because of the dated FDA regulations that don't allow the effective UVA filters (Tinosorb S) that are in it and some L'Oreal holds patented (Mexoryl XL, Mexoryl SX). I purchase mine from a local pharmacy or order online since I live in Europe. Try Amazon UK but I don't think it'll be worth ordering since it can get very pricey with the import tax and shipping. I'd rather suggest looking into better, more accessible options like the Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face Mineral Lotion SPF 50, which is mineral based, matte, fragrance free and affordable. I haven't tried it but it reads very well on paper and it's definitely worth giving it a shot if it's accessible for you. My experience with adapalene has been pretty solid for me and I had no trouble using it every day without irritation from the get go. I don't recommend doing this for everybody it's definitely smarter to build up tolerance. I'd definitely recommend it as an introduction to retinoids since tret can be quite harsh even at lower concentrations for most people and takes some time to get skin used to it. I was afraid of purging as well when I started using adapalene but i didn't get any, quite the opposite, it started clearing up. YMMV. Before adapalene I was using some chemical exfoliants with lactic acid which worked best for me, but I don't feel the need to use them now and they are quite subpar to prescription med. Hope this helps and thank you again! <3

Hi not OP... but did you mean cerave AM for the AM routine? It says PM.

I also use cerave AM as moisturizer and sunscreen. I find it keeps me moisturized but also kind of shiny. If I’m going to be home I stop there. Since I’m also on tret and skin is extra sensitive as it gets used to it if I’m going outside I put another sunscreen on top. I like this tinted sunscreen bc it dries matte, is water resistant (necessary for summer), has a nice tint for my skin tone, and isn’t expensive. Bonus: it takes care of the shiny the cerave AM leaves.

**Skin type and skin concerns:**

Main concerns: Dryness, acne (cystic and general acne all over chin and cheeks), and splotchy discoloration all over my face (my dermatologist said it was melasma). My skin is consistently congested and breaking out, yet my entire face is sensitive, dull, itchy and flakey. After years of reading tips here, I've finally gotten to the point where redness and the majority of flaking is gone and products don't burn when they touch me, but my skin remains dull and feels tight.

While the products I've selected are relatively affordable, they add up. Plus I'm worried I'm doing more damage than good by overwhelming my skin with all these product. Mostly though, I'm so jealous of all your minimalist routines I see on here, and I want to create one that would work for me. I don't know where to start. What are your thoughts?

  25. Once a week, spot treat acne problem areas with Proactiv Skin Purifying Mask

    **Daily behaviors possibly impacting skin:**

My diet is crap. While I don't eat a lot of processed food, I eat too much sugar, too much oily and fatty foods, too much red meat and not enough vegetables. Because of my family, it's going to be difficult to make adjustments, and honestly I'm not sure where to start. Caffeine consumption is pretty high, while I only have the occasional coffee, I drink a TON of green tea and oolong tea. Water intake is fair, and I usually refill my 32oz water bottle 2 times a day (yes, I have to run to the bathroom at least every 30 minutes). I pretty much stopped wearing makeup a little over a year ago, now I only wear for special occasions and the occasional eye liner.

It's my birthday today and went on a purchasing splurge!

New Purchases:

Refillable Atomizer Bottles - Came in 6 pieces and a little soft bag! Originally I was gonna use this for my colognes and perfumes; easily fits in pockets so I can spray on the go (also bonus point quick air freshener for bathrooms cuz some men's rooms be rank af.....); but then I was on the hunt for misters for my toners and realized I could use these perfectly for them! It's color-coded too so I don't mistake one of my scents for a toner!

-I filled the pink one with Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion
-the red one with Thayer's Witch Hazel Toner w/ Rose
-the blue one with Secret Key Milk (new)
-and the gold one with Secret Key Aloe (new)
The secret key ones are new purchases im trying out B) giving them about 2 weeks trial runs each before I rotate them in my routine!

Benton Snail Bee Essence - I enjoyed using the sheet masks once a week beforehand, and figured I'll up it to a more frequent usage so I went ahead and got the essence bottle! \o/ Dipped my toes with sheet masks first cuz I wasn't too sure about the bee venom ingredient (especially considering I get a bad reaction from stings) but it's gentler than I thought and no allergic reaction!

Etude House Sunprise Airy Finish SPF 50+ PA+++ - Received this 2 days ago! Previously I used Cerave AM and disliked the pilling and white cast on just a beige skintone! This is my first time using a sunmilk and the consistency is really nice! Goes on smoothly and can layer easily, with no whitecast after absorbing! If I wanted to, I could layer a moisturizer underneath without worrying about it pilling as well! Since I'm oily enough I'm not as concerned with it's lack of moisturizing and I find just toning layers is enough for me underneath! Great for oil control so far!

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face SPF 50 - Got this about a week ago! Since summer is around the corner, and the etude house isn't a waterproof sunscreen, I went with this that I bought at ulta! This matched my skintone pretty well so there was pretty much no whitecast. If it's a really sweaty day or I'm gonna be somewhere where there happens to be water/rain, this waterproof sunscreen was perfect! (and reef-safe for ocean trips)

Rohto Melano CC - On the way in the mail but excited to try this out since I was looking for a vitamin C, but wanted to start out gently!

Kao Success Scalp Washing Brush (Normal Type) - Sort of skincare since it has to do with the scalp, this is also on it's way on the mail. I'm a fan of scalp brushes since my hair is pretty thick (and also dandruff woes). The tips of it has little bumps on them and there's 3 types of tips on a single brush for that jam packed scalp action, so gonna give it a whirl and see how different it is from the standard silicone scalp brush!

-----------------------------------------------------

Repurchase:

Tony Moly Chok Chok Green Tea Watery Cream - I realized using stridex as my gentle BHA exfoliator and a Cerave SA cream on top of that meant I technically had 2 BHAs in a night routine, so I'm returning back to chok chok! Good point to change tbh since the cream is too heavy for summer. The tony moly one is pretty light and had good oil control!

Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Pads - Bringing back AHAs into my life for my PIH; I'm gonna rotate them with my BHAs. I prefer low %s so the 2.8% was perfect!

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face SPF 50, 3 Ounce.

It's a good thing! May not be suitable for very dry skin as I find it does somewhat mattify my slightly oily t-zone. If interested, keep an eye on the price because I've purchased it for $10 and slightly under a few times.

Does the percentage of active ingredients in a sunscreen matter? I recently picked up the Australian Gold Tinted Mineral Sunscreen which uses 4% titanium dioxide and 4% zinc oxide. Because of these low percentages, is this a poor sunscreen choice?

I am using tretinoin so I am trying to be mindful of my sunscreen choice.

u/LSScorpions · 1 pointr/tretinoin

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen SPF 50 Tinted Face Mineral Lotion, 3 Fl Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M8G39OW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_s8vRCbQP69B85

This is a mineral sunscreen, so it will protect from UVA and UVB. It works well on its own or under makeup. Not sure if you would want tint or no tint.

Steer away from chemical sunscreens. Many have been shown to break down into unsafe and even carcinogenic compounds and the FDA removed all of them in February from their list of generally considered safe and useful ingredients. Only zinc and titanium dioxide are still considered safe.

u/gwangarang · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

I use this tinted version for face, with the blue/green plant. $10 and prime shipping...Lol, I get a little paranoid if I'm running out.

Doesn't break me out or sting my eyes, and it's pretty good under makeup. Good luck :)

Edit for rambling

I apply an Asian chemical sunscreen when I wash up in the morning. Then top it with physical sunscreen right before walking out the door. Seems to do ok.

I haven’t tried that one but I have used a bunch of different Asian and drug store sunscreens and I’m super impressed by Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face Mineral Lotion, Broad Spectrum, Water Resistant, SPF 50, 3 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M8G39OW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SfS2DbF868H9D
The tinted gets rid of the white cast and it dries down pretty fast
