Usually. They wouldn't do it for me once. You can also buy a thing on Amazon.

+1 on all this and even better, code readers can be way cheaper than that. I've had one like this for years and it works great, currently $22 on Amazon.

$20 tool. Or even get a $3 obd to bluetooth adapter on ebay and use your phone. The light is worthless as it doesn't tell you if you need to park the car immediately, or if it's a nuisance issue like a loose gas cap.

Plenty of cars get driven till the check engine light burns out. Cruise control I'd guess is the clockspring in the steering wheel, I lived with it until the airbag light popped on (same wiring) and changed it out.

My main message is the cheapest car is the one you own already. When you look at these decisions in terms of months of wages, savings rate, etc it really incentivizes figuring out another way to make it work. Somewhere around $160,000/yr I'll probably stop doing my own work on my car and switch to leasing instead.

If you said you were driving a throw-away car like a low end chevy or chrysler I'd say dump it when it makes sense. A Toyota RAV4? Run it for the long haul, it has excellent reliability scores and it's reflected in the resale value.

AuTel is an industry standard. (Not THE industry standard, just AN industry standard.)

You'll get a lot of mixed advice here, and they're all probably correct. Here's what I bought when I first got in the game: https://www.amazon.com/Autel-MS309-Universal-Readiness-Diagnostic/dp/B07Q5H7M5S/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=obd2+code+reader&qid=1565279642&s=gateway&sr=8-7

And here's what I have now: https://www.amazon.com/Autel-MS908P-Automotive-Diagnostic-Reprogramming/dp/B00RFUY6XU

OBD2 readers are fairly commonplace, and honestly most things should pull codes without any trouble. Not sure why O'Reilley's couldn't pull your codes, but if you have a fairly new model of Jeep, sometimes not updating the tablet that they use will cause that problem. They probably didn't want to waste your time waiting on the update for the scan tool.
