Huh....that's how I'll have to do it then.

Also, for anyone wondering...GET A GOOD OTG CABLE

Do not waste your money on anything cheaper, if they even ship at all they will not work anyway.

These work for usb flash drives, not portable hard drives...but you just solved that problem for me, I was lazy and didn't really look further into it until now.

edit: holy fuck this had more backlash than any comment I've ever made. I'm an electronic technician and I know there's usually no difference between pricey and cheap when it comes to cables, but in this case I was just advising to be careful after I had tried 2 other brands and they didn't work on multiple devices, and have had friends that had the same problems with different brands as well.

If there are other good ones, by all means.... But you also need to consider shipping. You're paying for 2 day prime shipping on the one I linked instead of saving $5 and waiting a month for it to arrive from a Chinese sweatshop.

For fuck sake....

I do something similar now using this cable. Quick, painless, gets my files that I keep on the drive on and off the phone easily. I also used it last week to transfer some books I downloaded onto my phone onto my kindle. Honestly a very handy tool to have tucked away in your bag.

u/ninjaaron · 7 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

this one

There are a million that are like it for cheaper prices. I got this one because it has a lifetime warrenty.

u/Zombiebotking · 5 pointsr/gaming

You could plug one in if you have the right cable and phone settings, which might include rooting your phone.

Buying it on Steam would be way easier and more fun. Save the money on the cable, buy it on Steam. Doom can run on a cardboard box.

[Hashcode] (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591850&highlight=keyboard) has a nice one for the Kindle Fire. Jelly Bean that fixed the charging problem a lot of them had. You could also use [this] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01) to hook up a mouse and keyboard. It's the one I use.

u/Kleivonen · 3 pointsr/Android

My 6P can already do this, and I'm pretty sure most/all Android phones can do this.

Also, lol, no USB-C. Who would back a project that uses a standard that's about to change? Most new Android phones don't use microusb.

Also, these exist:

Edit:

Also, USB-C supports this out of the box.

u/turlian · 3 pointsr/AndroidQuestions

I believe you may need Honeycomb or ICS to do this, but you can use an otg cable to connect a SD/USB adapter to your phone.

I've used this setup to connect a USB flash drive to my Xoom.

u/Eleminohp · 3 pointsr/Android

It's not quite the same thing, but if you own a Canon DSLR this DSLR Controller app is extremely useful. I am currently a DP on an indie film, and while I have a lot of gear, I decided to skip buying a monitor this time around. I remembered this app being in beta stages and I was like well 7 bucks is cheaper than $300+ for a monitor, so I will try it out. I have the Asus Transformer so a standard USB cord is all I needed to link it up to the camera, but I also bought the OTG cord for my phone and other future tablets. I must say that this app gives you COMPLETE control of your DSLR over your Android and it does it very intuitively. The live view has a slight delay, but for the sake of focusing your shot, a 10 inch screen is the way to do it.

*edit: I should note that if you buy a newer Canon DSLR (like the 6D) you can connect to this app via wifi and forego the cable altogether.

I'm using that one just fine with Nexus media importer and a flash drive.

u/motioneso · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

This is the one I used. But it should be noted that this blocks the headphone jack. I think I'll be splicing a micro USB and extension cable together so it is straight.

u/seeBurtrun · 2 pointsr/Nexus7

This is the one I got. I am sure you can find cheaper ones, but this has a lifetime warranty and was eligible for Prime. Works like a charm.

u/danieltobey · 2 pointsr/theNvidiaShield

Over wifi there's going to be a bit of lag. You can test your connection by going to the Shield Hub, going to My PC Games, tapping the PC icon in the top right corner, hitting "Connectivity" and hitting "Test Network". Then you can tell if it's your network or if it's your computer.

A wired connection is best though. It will result in a much higher quality image, better framerates, and reduced lag. Bought these to deal with lag:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F41TWAO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I recommend them, I tried cheaper ones and they didn't work.

u/dwrdbg · 2 pointsr/GalaxyS3

In that case, here is another solution:

purchase a OTG cable (this is the one I use):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you plug in your mouse, it will allow you to control the phone with your mouse. With it, you can unlock your phone and transfer files!

u/DontBreatheThis_ · 2 pointsr/videography

I also found a cable that you will need to get. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005GGBYJ4/ref=redir_mdp_mobile

I don't know if the Galaxy S4 supports USB On the Go, but I carry in my DSLR camera case a USB On-the-go adapter which works with the Galaxy S3. I also carry this small multi card adapter. Connect the USB OTG cable to the phone and the adapter to the other end of the cable. Pop the card into the adapter and you're on your way.

u/mattm57 · 1 pointr/Nexus7

I just ordered this one. Its few more dollars than the others but at least its coming from the US. Its eligible for prime also.

Lifetime warranty, works great with a wired keyboard. I don't have a wireless setup so I borrowed a co-worker's wireless mouse to test with, and it works (I think it was a Microsoft mouse) - I'd imagine the keyboard + mouse wireless combo would work but I've got no way to test it myself.

$8 when I bought (June) but I guess they've raised the price. Mine came slightly crushed, so I took a picture, and emailed support to see about a replacement (lifetime warranty and all) - they refunded my money no problem, & after bending the female end back into shape, the cable works fine.

rooted smoothrom + stickmount + n7/xoom compatible otg cable worked for me.

i think it worked on the CM-based smoothroms as well as the AOKP-based.

Link to the cable i bought. works good and the 90degree bend helps with the cable coming loose (i guess, i don't have a lot of occasion to use it that often).

1st drive shows up under /sdcard/usbStorage/sda1 or /storage/emulated/0/usbStorage/sda1 or just /usbStorage/sda1 in a file browser, depending on what sort of setup your rom is running.

u/CubeCraft751 · 1 pointr/lgg4

You need an OTG cable like this one. It doesn't have to be this exact one, but basically it lets you plug in USB stuff to your phone, including mice.

u/JoeFCaputo0113 · 1 pointr/AndroidQuestions

Hey Yawers, why not get a USB OTG cable?? This can solve all your woes! http://www.amazon.com/LIFETIME-WARRANTY-Electronics-Micro-Cable/dp/B005GGBYJ4

But to answer your question in OP.... juts wipe system/data/cache/dalvik(ART) cache. And then you are good to go to install your new ROM :)

u/jayrox · 1 pointr/Android

otg cable is a male micro usb to a female standard usb cable.

u/Ssithero · 1 pointr/gaming

i believe he modified the plug on the N64 controller into a USB plug or used something like this, and attached that to an OTG cable.

at least that's how i'd do it if i was going to do wired. sixaxis controller+dualshock seems like a better choice to me, though. maybe i just hate wires.

u/fogman103 · 1 pointr/PleX

That's essentially what I've been trying (OTG cable is micro usb on one end, and female usb on the other side - I have a 32gb drive plugged in). Plex doesn't let me manually set that as the location. Have you used one of those sandisk drives?

u/RiMiBe · 1 pointr/diydrones

Here is what I use

That will give your android device a full-sized female USB port (like on a computer) and you can then connect your android to the radio in the same way you would connect the radio to a PC running ground station software: using a standard microusb cable.

3DR seems to be including a neat little cable combining that setup into one short cable (the blue on in your link). I'm sure that's convenient in its own way, but you can likely find the exact same thing elsewhere.

u/finnieas · 0 pointsr/Nexus5

Your plans for this phone are anathema to everything I hold dear in the cockles of my geek heart. ^Maybe ^even ^the ^sub-cockles.

Since there's, like, two apps that are exclusive to Nexus 5 that don't need root to function well, I think you'd get better traction and a wider array of app selections from /r/android. Not trying to be a dick ^okay, ^maybe ^just ^a ^little just saying, other than people suggesting replacement applications for stock apps, I can't see this discussion going anywhere. Speaking of, I find the stock camera app to be a little too basic, and prefer Camera Awesome. But I'm sure there's something better. Otherwise I'm pretty satisfied with the rest.

In the mean while, Wakeup Touch Nexus saved my sanity when my power button broke.

I also really like the Nexus Media Importer app -- but you'll need an OTG cable for that... it's nice to transfer stuff over. The cable is also pretty awesome since you can get a mouse or keyboard and have it work as well. But I heard that after 4.4.2 Google killed the ability for USB OTG? Which means less function with said cable and Nexus Media Importer if that's true. Haven't tested personally, or thought to check up on it.

If there are other Nexus exclusive apps, I'd actually be curious to find out as well though.
