PREPARE FOR TOP VOTED COMMENT.. I GIVE OP WHAT HE ASKS FOR!

I had no idea you started a new thread. Dude if you want, and you're near me (San Jose/CA) we can meet sometime at my shop. I'm kind of one of those people that would look at showing you how/where to do packaging is not just doing you a favor, but doing the world a favor :)

Edit Gonna add some stuff.. Hang on a second.

Edit 2 OK here we go.

I pointed out above in my reply to /u/vhdblood that pre-packaging will matter to clubs who primarily deal in pre-weighed products. Now, we can debate which is better, pre-weigh or freeweigh, but that is not the focus of your thread, you want to know how to package.

The first thing you have to do is figure out what your container is going to be. This is easy.. Uline, Amazon, whoever will have "Food Grade Jars" available in these sizes. Offhand, I'm back at home, I don't have one of these jars here, but I'll try and get the size monday for ya. Jars are nice, our customers love them. The second from the last image linked in my imgur album above is ABX's flower pre-weigh product. We all know Absolute Extracts, they're big. They're using a print service for SURE. You can tell from the nice shiny foil they have. For a startup, I wouldn't do that. Right before that (3rd to last) I have another example from Trinity Farms.

Trinity farms is doing it on the cheap, likely themselves. It looks like they're using an Avery 2" label, printed from any standard laser printer. Avery also has an online site where you can design and print labels. For an online program, it's suprisingly functional, and we've designed over 50 in house product lines (not all are active now) using it. Now that we're more experienced, we have better methods, but it's a good starting point, and we still use it for quick and dirty stuff today.

So you wait for your jars, and you want to start knowing what type of stuff to put on it. That's marketing.. I'm not marketing. I'm IT/Facilitates/Compliance and somewhat autistic :) That being said, I look more for the information than the design. Stuff I'm looking for.

  • Your Company Name
  • You product/strain name
  • Weight/quantity
  • mg per dose (if edible)
  • Lab testing results
  • Prop65 warning (for California, do it or get sued by ambulance chasers)
  • Contact info (website, email, phone, media, etc)
  • UPC Code.

That's a pretty long list. Compile all that info together and hand it off to a graphic designer, and tell them the label specs. Tell them you would like them to return PDF's of the label designs. Use a round label for the lid, and a square label for the jar.

The reason I mention "Ask for PDF's" is because this will make it easier to do your own runs. You just load your printer up with the labels, open the PDF, and print as many copies as you need.

Now let's take a look at cost.

    120 labels = $12

120 Jars = $120 (This was just the first price I saw on amazon, Uline would be cheaper)

Basically now you have a unit that costs you at the high end, $1.10. Let's say an 8th you wholesale for $20 for top shelf. You can markup the packaging to $2.10 per unit giving you a profit of $1 per unit.

So instead of that 8th profitting you $20(not accounting for grow costs), it now profits you $21. You're going to make an extra $128 per lb packaged. I think labor costs would still take about 2 hours to package it all, but you're paying a guy $15@hr to do it.. It's not skilled labor. So you're still ahead $89@lb.

So let's say you sold that lb for $1500+$128(packaging) into 8th units. The profit ratio of the 8th units would represent about 8.5% of the total sale. Not a bad chunk of change there, but it gets even better :)

Let's say you pre-packaged grams! OMG! Now you're cooking! 448 Grams per lb.. That's an extra $492 in profit. Suddenly grams seem like the way to go! Also, in states that tax MJ income.. You packaging is not subjected to MJ tax.

PHEW.. Sorry for the wall of text folks. I get excited about packaging. :)

Edit 2 Another thing I should throw out here is ask the dispensary if they have "Vendor Demo Days" These are days that you setup a small table and give out free samples to our patients. It's a great way to get your foot in the door, and get the dispensary to take some stock from you.

Edit 3 Also have to mention, in California you would be required to have a BOE (Board of Equalization) sellers permit. We'd also need an EIN (Employer id number) from the IRS. We 1099 all vendors.

If some of your label prints are photo based, for the highest image quality you will definitely want to consider an good inkjet printer over a color laser.

First of all - are you using standard or inkjet Avery labels? It could mean a drastic difference in quality, and may account for the lackluster prints that you have observed. Before investing in a new printer, I would suggest trying out some high-quality glossy coated inkjet labels and use the printer's highest photo quality setting. Durable glossy coated weatherproof labels are also available which you may want to try out.

If you are decided on a new printer for product labeling, consider the Canon PIXMA Pro-100. Although you didn't specify large format - this printer does support media sizes up to 13x19" and up to 13x26" is possible through an undocumented process, see link below - this may come in handy for producing impressive signage and other display material for your products. The Pro-100 has a highly color-accurate 8-color ink system that will produce professional quality printouts, and is perfect for graphic design proofing and perfectly capable of producing the highest quality product labels. It can give you an extremely high resolution of 4800x2400 dpi capable of a microscopic 3 picoliter droplet size. The Canon PIXMA Pro-100 is a excellent professional-grade printer. Be sure you check the dimensions first - this printer is large and heavy. Printing on the highest quality setting with Canon media and appropriate color-correction (dependent on your computer and monitor configuration), you can expect your printed output to be indistinguishable from actual photographs.

Several people have purchased these printers and claimed a rebate (cut the UPC from the box), but left the printer sealed, unused and unopened. These can be easily purchased BRAND NEW on Amazon Marketplace starting around US $200 including shipping (be sure to stick to sellers with an established history of positive reviews).

Exactly. Although I found a package of these that let me label the lids on my jars, and that way I can keep them boxed and still know what all the jars are.
