For gift card balances, I use Avery 1/2" x 3/4" Removable All-Purpose Labels in a 525ct pack found at Walmart. Put one in the opposite orientation of the gift card in the lower left corner of the back of the card. You can use it as a small ledger to indicate the balance of the card. I do that because sometimes I'll put more than one transaction on the card if I need a MO in a certain value and use the rest on Amazon gift cards or something.

For a larger label which is clear and removable, Avery also has clear address labels. They might work better than Scotch tape, but I don't have experience using them. You could put one on the card and write whatever you want, or print on them so they don't look as tacky as marking Scotch tape with a Sharpie. One sheet could just read "Grocery Stores" and another sheet reads "Office Supply Stores".
