I play with a guy who's got a lot of handwritten cards, his blanks cards were filled out by various folks (including 2 from Steve Jackson at a recent con!) using Sharpie. The handwriting of the various people who filled the cards out can sometimes be VERY hard to read, and that stuff distracts from gameplay when we use his set. Plus some of those cards have gotten smeared one way or another along the way, "permanent" Sharpie or not. So I decided that I'm going to stay away from handwriting.
So I bought 2x2 Avery labels to use for this purpose. I use MS Word (along with the proper Avery template) to print these up nicely, using the same font as on the manufactured cards. Everything is more seamless, and everything's easily readable.
Besides, with the labels, I figure that if I decide later on that one of the homemade wordings isn't worth keeping, then it's easy enough to make a new label and stick it over the old one. Or, if that makes the card too thick, then I can probably heat up the original label with a hair dryer and peel it off, to put the new label in its place.
Here's a look at one that I've made up (Archer fans will understand this quickly): http://i.imgur.com/3mF43Wz.jpg
