I don't really know how much money was saved or not saved. I bought

You might find better deals, I honestly didn't look that hard.
I know a lot of pre builts go for way more money and some might be right on par with what I spent but I also don't think it's ridiculous to spend higher prices, for a few reasons:
As far as actually assembling the motor and battery it was pretty simple. I soldered my battery cables to the controller that came with the motor but everything else was plug and play. The toughest part will be mounting the battery somewhere on the bike, if you have a water bottle cage you can use the mounts from there.
Finally, yes there are loads of us here on /r/ebikes that made our own creations! I found some help here when I had questions and found everyone to be friendly.
48v 13ah battery (0.624)kwh, so a pretty good size battery for casual riding ($272)
48v 1000w conversion kit More than enough power with pretty much everything you need. ($232)
So $504 total if you already have a bike. Very possible to be sub $500 easily with a 36v battery or a 48v 10ah or less battery.

Doing a little bit more research, I found a front and rear 48V 1000W kit that comes to a little over $500. It looks like this is exactly what I'm looking for.
I think I'm going to wait a week or two before I buy these since they're so cheap. Any additional advice in the meantime would be appreciated.
In addition, I found this motor (https://www.amazon.com/AW-Electric-Bicycle-Powerful-Conversion/dp/B00YBWA5VC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494044112&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bicycle+motor&psc=1) online. It's even cheaper, and I would honestly prefer to spend as little as possible, but do you think that this one could work? My bike has 26 inch wheels.
