Make sure they fit (goldilocks style--not too big so that they flip-flop in the back, not too small so that they pinch your toes).
Wear them often. It's a different way of walking, it takes some getting used to.

I use Band-Aid Friction Block sticks if I've got boots that need broken in or other conditions that make me think I might wind up with a blister. Works better for me than vaseline or wearing extra socks, doesn't leave a noticeable residue on your socks or your feet, and I've never had a blister or even a red/hot spot while using them. I've broken in brand-new very stiff synthetic boots without any problems.

Band Aid brand makes a product called 'Band Aid Glide' which I've used several times on my thighs, bum and feet to prevent chaffing. It does the same thing as petroleum jelly but without the mess.
