You don't mention what razor you are currently using. Some razors are significantly more aggressive than other while maintaining the safety bar. A Fatip Piccolo would fall into the category of "more aggressive" razors while still having a useful safety bar.
I have only seen on razor purposely made without a guardbar and it was from a sketchy no-name distributor.

Personally I think that once your remove the guard bar you have lost all pretense of being a "safety razor" and you would be better off switching to a shavette.
EDIT: I don't get all the down votes on this thread. This is a legitimate question that sparked an acceptable level of discussion.
