The shock actually does pass in about that much time. After reading Becoming the Iceman I've been practicing a bit. I fill a pot with ice water, wait for the ice to stop melting, then dunk my hand and hold it. Hurts like hell for a couple minutes but then it's fine, and you can keep it immersed as long as you want. It helps a lot to know that, even though the pain keeps getting worse for a while, it's really going to go away.

Gets easier over time, too. The first time I couldn't handle more than ten or twenty seconds, now even the first couple minutes doesn't bother me much. After that it's easy.

According to the book it works whole-body, too, just takes practice. For anyone who might face this emergency in the wild, it might not be a bad idea to practice it under controlled circumstances.

The Wim Hof Method for anyone not familiar: http://highexistence.com/the-wim-hof-method-revealed-how-to-consciously-control-your-immune-system/

Wim, I bought and read your book that you co-authored with someone else: http://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Iceman-Wim-Hof/dp/1937600467 You probably are aware, since many reviews discuss it, that it is littered with typos and is not they well-written. For one example besides the typos, the Method as described at the above website does a much better job describing it than does your book.

Any thoughts about fixing up the book or putting out a new one? I am asking as a fan. I would love to purchase a revised edition. All the best to you.

It is talked about anecdotally in the book Becoming the Ice Man.

Basically Justin runs it off some while going to someplace warm. Also gets out of the wet clothes and wraps up in blankets. As he gets more acclimated (weeks/months) the effect of "after drop" lessens.

Thanks for the coupon, it's pretty tempting at that price.

He has a book you can buy for about $16 that has some of the exercises in the back. The book is a bit of an autobiography and very worthwhile in my opinion. He draws from a lot of experiences and I think many of the people here might enjoy it.

The reviews aren't favorable for his co-author. The concerns are fairly legitimate, but I look at it as a roadmap of awakening for someone immersed in Standard Normal Consumerism. Seen that way, it's not bad. If you only want to read Wim, the chapters are clearly marked.

I only mention it here so that people who are feeling penny-pinched have something to try before dropping bigger bucks on the video course.

If anyone is interested in why cold showers are good for you, you should check out Wim Hof: Becoming the Iceman

There's also a good youtube video that I can't seem to find, where the same fellow goes through his experiences with Wim Hof.

I'm onboard with you here! There is scientific evidence proving that you can build a resilience to cold, and this strengthens your immunal response.

It's definitely true that you can't really market either of these ideas to the masses, which is why they have such strong stigmas attached to them. It's pretty crazy how much research into fasting and low-carb diets have been done recently, and there's still this incredibly strong pushback on these types of (fringe?) sciences. Hopefully things starts to change in the next few decades.

There's a Vice documentary and also the Wim Hof book Becoming the Iceman. Both are decent resources but lean a bit towards inspiration / self-help more than the specific method; I found both pretty useful. Wim Hof has also done quite a few interviews which aren't hard to find. The Joe Rogan show did a good interview. There's also a decent subreddit /r/becomingtheiceman but it's not too active.

If you're just interested in the technique, this video does a decent job explaining the breathing method. There's also a decent explanation on Wim's website here.
