Stoplight alarm clock. Best $40 I ever spent. It makes it like a game instead of trying to teach him to get up when the numbers match. We started using it when our daughter was about 2.5 and now she's 3.5 and only ever gets out when we set it to be green. (Red for sleep, green for get up).

works well for us as well. my 2.5 yr old is pretty excited to wake up and leave the room by himself when the light is green, so he's extra determined to sleep when it's red. we also tell him that he shouldn't get out of bed (floor is lava) when the light is on and when it's red. he may or may get out of bed, but we have his books in his room and the door closed, so we don't actually know. all we know is that he doesn't wake us all up until after 7am. extra bonus, gets my wife and i do do math every night in order to figure out when 7am would be.

we use this one if you were wondering: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CB9G7ZU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

super extra bonus, we even actually somehow managed to ween him off of co-sleeping by using a combination of persistence and the stoplight wake up clock. to be honest, still not exactly sure how we managed to do this, but we're not asking too many questions. now if only his younger sister would start sleeping through the night...
