Microphones are nice, headphones are cheap. My pair is only $20!

Guitar:

  • I'd look at used gear on Reverb, max 225. Quick search and found this B-Stock Maple Fretboard Squire Strat. Not the best, but for a beginner it's pretty good! This came in at $185 plus free shipping.

    Amp:

  • For Amp, it's Fender again with this Champion 20W Combo. This is a well thought of amp that will be able to help a young guitarist try a bunch of different sounds, and Fender+Fender has to be good, right? $100 for just the amp, and it qualifies from Prime free 1-day shipping. There are a bunch of other options in this pricepoint as well.

    Software:

  • One piece of software that I know helps motivate me to play is Rocksmith. I own RS2014 for the Xbox and for PC (through Steam). This might be cheating for pricing, but I would give the steam version, purchased during the holiday sale (I got it for $12, if I recall correctly). The damn cable I'd try to find used, or spend the $50 on Amazon. $62 total, using holiday sale pricing and full price cable.

    Peripherals:

  • Finally a non-standard peripheral that I couldn't just pass along to them: Some studio headphones to help when they inevitably want to practice late at night. For this, these Behringer Headphones are well reviewed, though I don't have any personal experience with them, though at $20, maybe I should try them!

    So, in total:

  • Guitar - 185
  • Amp - 100
  • Software - 62
  • Headphones - 20

$367 with almost everything having free shipping. The cost could definitely come down by going strictly used on the guitar and amp, but I think this isn't too bad! What do you think? What would you change? How would you make yours differently?

I snagged a pair of my partner's Sennheiser studio headphones (he's a musician) just because they have really cushy ear covers since they're meant to be worn A LOT. Behringer also makes some great inexpensive and comfortable ones that they sell with their podcasting kits. It really comes down to what your preferences are. I like big visible ones for working and earbuds outside of the office. edited to add specific headphone links for the curious

Fair enough. I also use these for travel. They're slightly heavier and closed ear, and the lows aren't as strong. (I might be biased by being an AKG fan though) http://amzn.com/B0002Z82XA

Problem: not living in the US often leads to (very) higher price ranges.

I care a little bit, but I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile. I guess I am in spirit but just can't afford anything spectacular. I'm not happy with generic cheap earbuds that most people use now, not just the sound quality but because they wear out and stop working very quickly. Other than that I'm not picky. When I posted that over there though, I didn't know there was a headphone subreddit.

My previous headphones were Behringer HPS3000 and they sounded great to me personally, but I haven't heard any really high end headphones. But now I'm looking for something wireless with similar sound quality (or better)

These were $30-$40 when I bought them back in 2015, now they're cheaper. Only reason I'm replacing them is one of the earpads broke off, they're a little big for working out, and want something wireless.

I use anchor its awesome, the support team is always really helpful and quick, plus they post almost everywhere.

If you already have a mac book tho you can record right into it. if your budget is around 1000 you can get some nice stuff. My set up rn is just a zoom H6 and two audio technica mics and a pop. If you want a nice headset thats not too expensive I like these.

The zoom is nice because it can double as a mixer and it portable, the mic can plug into your computer through usb so your not just stuck recording into the zoom.
