I think you'd be better off trying to find a way to hide the door and air return behind it.
If you put something similar to this in the space, it would cover the door and air return, but still allow for air to get to the actual air return Obviously this is too big, but you get the idea. Some sort of screen that allows for air flow.
You'd also have something on the floor that gives you a place to hid a small uplight so you can turn the pole into lighted decor instead of a core support structure
