There's a really good book, What Animals Think and Feel, which discusses this phenomenon and interviews a lot of field researchers about the subject.

It's a really good read.

Sorry, I was mixed up on what comment you were originally responding to. You are correct- I did make the affirmative claim that animals are thinking, feeling beings. My apologies.

For a source on that, I’d refer you Beyond Words by Carl Safina. He spends time with three researchers in animal behavior, studying elephants, wolves, and orcas and their social lives. Very insightful and well-sourced book. I’ll come back to this and give more when I’m home from brunch lol.

I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend the book Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel. It gave me a whole new perspective on the complexity of the lives and emotions of other very intelligent animals.

There's an amazing book I plug as frequently as possible called Beyond Words : What Animals Think and Feel by Carl Safina that deals with exactly this.

He comes from a skeptical perspective and shares lots of anecdotal evidence from a variety of animal populations, most extensively elephants, wolves, and orcas.

The social behaviors we've observed from those species are nothing short of amazing and while our brains are clearly wired differently and are running on incompatible operating and file storage systems I don't think you could ever argue that they don't feel emotions.

Elephants grieve.
